A man quit his job, travels 96500km (60000 miles), he took 37000 pictures of space, and he joined them all into 1 interactive 3D panorama.

This is the result: http://media.skysurvey.org/interactive360/index.html

Makes you appreciate how beautiful space is.

Wait, is this really how space looks around earth? Is it really this obvious that milky way is a disc-shaped galaxy, or am I just not seeing this right?

When you're on a circular planet the sky appears circular.

Yeah, I always wondered how that looks if you're looking it yourself. You probably need total darkness to begin with, and not everywhere on Earth.

well due to earth being in a far branch of the milky way you for sure can make out those "disc"-formed shape.

That's not a very good mindset to approach the universe with. Why would it be that way is a better question.

That's awesome. When I looked at that, however, I did not find it beautiful so much as I found it scary. A giant expanse of endless mystery and those colors make me feel like I'm seeing a bad dream.

It's remarkable either way, though.

Cool. I wonder how long it took him to record all these pictures.

These pictures are all taken when the earth is facing away from the sun. So its not really as if you were viewing from the earths perspective. What he could of done is take a picture everyday for a year and then maybe have a sorta accurate view.

edit; actually I dont understand why he had to travel at all to do this. If you could take 2 pictures (to get a view from top to bottom) on the same longitude every night for a year you would get an accurate result.

Honestly what job did he have before this journey through space? Who quits their job and then makes the greatest slideshow of space?

exeexe: u started the derailing with something stupid.

#1 - God and Aliens are not the same thing. Maybe to certain people who believe Alien's = god but God does not = alien.

#2 - 37,000 pictures is not enough proof of space to say "no aliens". Aliens prolly further away. If any were close by they be cloaked like Arb and full of predators probably. (P.S. Think about how huge space is)

what? what does that have to do with anything, in addition to being irrelevant to it's own conclusions (regardless of whether the conclusions are true or not)

great derail

"37000 pictures and no one showed humans
means no humans"

flawless logic right?

Lets not discuss if its a derail or not, because that would be the true derail. Anyways the pictures was made by a human ... so there goes your proof.

you really missed the point of that example, but fair enough

You're not curious? That some man - quit his job - and then took 37,000k pictures of space?

It'd be different if it was 37k pictures of all the blue water on Earth while he sailed or some shit but THIS IS SPACE.

Your acknowledgement of it's beauty is a testament to the outrageousness of this all. I'm not saying anything bad about it but seriously I still thought we lived in a time where you needed a job to get to space.

This guy have a private spaceship and docking zone or does he borrow from another country?

I'm pretty sure he took the pictures from Earth

LOL ya I just read http://skysurvey.org/ . Still pretty fucking sweet and even more impressive given his creativity. I blame space for pretty much looking like space anywhere you go

Anybody else get creeped out by watching the mountain video? Imagining being up above the clouds made me shiver...

Hm. I'm afraid of tornadoes and now these close-ups of the clouds. I think I'm on to something.

It was all really beautiful. I'm envious of whichever generations will be more involved in space exploration, and I guess just the universe in general.

Once I really understood what this was and the angle from which I'm looking (tooltip thing) this became amazing. It's our galaxy from the point of view of our solar system.

I don't think he wanted "sorta accurate" though. This man wanted to make a display of space, without the perspective distortions that we get from simply looking up at the sky every day.

it really is that obvious, the middle of our sky is a band of milky stars (the work galaxy comes from the greek "Galacos" meaning milk).... if it weren't for all the street lights, you would see it yourself every night. Especially near the equator or in the southern hemisphere.

You have to get far away from cities if you want to see the Milky Way with the naked eye, and then use good cameras at high exposure to pick up all of the subtle detail that is there.

A lot of people aren't able to appreciate just how much there is up there, because the live in cities and the "light pollution" prevents the naked eye from seeing the vast majority of stars. I still remember the first time I went out to sea, more than 30 miles from land. I looked up and was blown away, not a single inch of the sky that wasn't overflowing with stars. You can actually see the cluster, and shape of our galaxy and perceive the cloud of the milky way with the naked eye. I'm actually surprised how many people have never had the opportunity to see this for themselves.
There are more stars than grains of sand on all the beaches of the world, yet people still wonder if life exists elsewhere......

Some other interesting stuff, if you use the labels icon to show the constellations, then find the big dipper. The star Mizar if you zoom in you will actually see 2 stars. This is visible with the naked eye sky at night. The large star is actually a solar system with 5 stars wobbling around each other, the smaller star is actually a binary star system (2 suns).

If you'd like to see something equally breathtaking take a look at this

It will give you a whole new appreciation of our universe. Here is a high quality version of the image the video talks about.

Some pictures are taken using infrared/UV/xray telescopes, and those are false color. Objects in deep space do, however, emit light in the visible spectrum, so some images are natural color. Not sure if these are enhanced or not, but they're definitely in the visible range.

This is how the sky looked to our ancestors. Thank you so much, light pollution!

This is very similar to Starry Nights. In some sense his pictures seem to have some more quality to them compared to Starry Nights. But of course you can't turn on the constellations or ask for star names, etc.

As for the bulge of the universe, you can't see it if you are too far north on the northern hemisphere. If you are nearer to the equator, you can see it close to the horizon. On the southern hemisphere, it will be visible overhead and is stunning, so I am told.

If you want to know a certain object, I can tell you. But the main things are, apart from the milky way disc, the Small and Large Magellan clouds, Pleades and Andromeda Galaxy.

All those dots, even the smaller one is a star. Just like our sun (some bigger some smaller). And that's just a very tiny part of our universe. You could multiply those you see by 1.000.000 and you still wouldn't be close to the amount of stars there are.

The only way life could have developed only on this little planet traveling around just one of all those stars, is if God really exists. Otherwise it's impossible

(btw. one of the most beautiful and impressive videos ive ever seen)

This was filmed on teneriffa, so yeah, clear sky and a preferably high place for observation is "all" you need.

Parts of it make me wonder if it's even real, but it is amazing either way.

Some of it looks so amazing that you cant imagine it being real, but i do believe its all real, just timelapsed which sure makes for some neat effects.

Part of the "unreal" feel of the video comes from the editing. Several of the shots, especially of the mountain itself, appear to be composites from multiple cameras or one camera taking multiple exposures in rapid succession. I'm sure it's been faithfully edited, or more likely, was compiled together by a computer in real time.

Either way, it's all real, and very beautiful.

If you like this kind of thing, I have to recommend Space Engine. It's basically that sky survey, except in three dimensions, to scale, and crossed with the Total Perspective Vortex from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

http://applesforgeeks.com/space-engine-free-universe-simulator/

Without a doubt the coolest thing I've downloaded in the past few months.

If you could take 2 pictures (to get a view from top to bottom) on the same longitude every night for a year you would get an accurate result.

yea im not really sure what the deal is with how he did it, its confusing.

I just wish I was born some 200 years later to discover space up close.
Or better said, I wish I lived for another 200 years.
I'd love to be around when discoveries happen, this is what life is all about.

lol that is exactly how I feel when I see any deep field space picture. I am glad to see others respond the same way, that's why I share these with anyone I can when I happen to find one. It's really hard to deny the power of these pictures if you know anything about chemistry or astronomy.

Amazing photos of our galaxy but imo the vimeo video was a lot more epic than the OP.

This is absolutely amazing. I wish my mind could even begin to comprehend this. All those dots aren't even stars but entire galaxies. I wish I could live so much longer just to know about our space adventures and discoveries. Hopefully before I die they perfect this freezing of the body and thawing it years later.
