I would just try to avoid anything like the dark ages, or the Inquisition, or book burnings in China - occasions where large amounts of knowledge, or opportunities to gain knowledge, were lost. Assuming they could understand me, and they would heed my words, I would say something along the lines of, "Never look down upon the person who seeks to know more and question, for that one is the only hope for the future."
