FAQs

+ Show Spoiler +
How high is the nest?
About 80 feet.

How big is the nest?
5-6 feet across, about the same deep; it weighs about 1½ tons.

How old is the nest?

The eagles built it in 2007. A previous nest close by fell when a windstorm broke one of the branches.

Are these eagles banded?
No.

Which is the male and which is the female?
It is hard to tell the difference unless they are both on the nest. The female is larger than the male. This female has a ridge above her eyes that goes further back than on the male, and her eyes are surrounded by a greyish shadow; the male has a line around his eyes that makes them look “beadier.” Some think that the male’s head is “sleeker” than the female’s.

What is the history of this pair?
They have been together since the winter of 2007-2008. Her markings at that time indicated that she was about 4 years old. They successfully hatched and fledged 2 eaglets in 2008, then 3 in 2009, and 3 more in 2010.

When were the eggs laid in 2010, and when did they hatch?
First egg was February 25, second on February 28, third on March 5. First hatch was April 3, second on April 6, third on April 9. All three eaglets fledged and are now on the wing but are not being tracked.

What is the area around the nest like?
The nest is in a cottonwood tree on private property near the Decorah Fish Hatchery (operated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources), on the banks of the babbling waters of Trout Run in extreme northeast Iowa. The nest can be seen from the hatchery, but visitors to the hatchery should keep their distance from the nest tree, both to respect the private property where the tree is located and to avoid disturbing the eagles.
Here is a ground-level video of the surroundings, taken in March 2010.
This video shows the eagles’ point of view.

Where can I see pictures and videos of these eagles?
RRP provides an archive of daily views of the nest over the immediate 24-hour period, taken every 2 minutes. Click on Eagle Dailies.
RRP’s Youtube site has many videos.

Who operates and maintains this cam?
The Raptor Resource Project (RRP) maintains the cams, of which there are two, and the feed is streamed online 24/7. Both are positioned on one of the nest’s supporting limbs about 4-5 feet above the nest. The main cam is automated and is trained on the nest. The other cam has pan-tilt-zoom capabilities (PTZ). At dark the main cam switches to infrared (invisible to the eagles) night-time view. Here is a slide show of the cam installation in fall 2010.

Who does the panning, tilting, and zooming, and when does that happen?
Bob Anderson, Executive Director of RRP, switches to the PTZ cam when time and weather permit, and especially when there appears to be interesting activity in the nest. He will be especially attentive when hatching begins.

What is the Raptor Resource Project?
Established in 1988, the non-profit Raptor Resource Project specializes in the preservation of falcons, eagles, ospreys, hawks, and owls. We establish and strengthen breeding populations of these raptors by creating, improving, and maintaining nests and nest sites. In addition to directly managing over twenty-three falcon, eagle, and owl nest sites, we provide training in nest site creation and management across the United States, reach more than 85,000 people each year through lectures, education programs, and our website, and develop innovations in nest site management and viewing that bring people closer to the world around them.
Our mission is to preserve and strengthen raptor populations, to expand participation in raptor preservation, and to help foster the next generation of preservationists. Our work deepens the connection between people and the natural world, bringing benefits to both.
Check out the links to cams of many of the raptor nests that RRP manages.
RRP also has a Facebook page.

Does the Raptor Resource Project accept donations?
Yes! RRP is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and relies on the donations of friends. There is a donation button on the RRP home page.

What’s this about a PBS documentary on this nest?
The Decorah eagle nest was featured in a PBS Nature series program, “American Eagle,” that premiered in November 2008. Filmed by cinematographers Robert Anderson and Neil Rettig in high-definition, the video is available on DVD and online.

Rumor Mill: This news story which documents the tragic death of a bald eagle that had a webcam following is not one of the Decorah eagles we have been following.

I think the Baby Eagles can easily take this 3-0. It's going to be an all-kill for sure.

I dunno man, I feel that the fish has been way overpowered lately, what with the underwater thing they have going.
Eagle mom has been showing form lately though, if dad can just deliver some nice simcity micro I'm sure they'll be fine!

I figure if you're going to make terrible threads you should keep them in the appropriate subforum. I keep SC2 hidden so I don't have to see threads like this.

What does this have to do with SC2?

150 thousand viewers on this stream seems to indicate to me that this is of interest to people. I felt I'd share it with TL in a humorous manner. I apologize for the inconvenience.

This has got to be the greatest thread ever!

On topic:
I think the eagle was playing a little greedy, going 3 hatch before pool. Now, I feel for the opponent. With the eagle going heavy air, I just don't think team Mouz has what it takes to defend against the heavy harass eagle is capable of.

Yeah, all kidding aside, I was afraid it might have been left to simply freeze to death. The mother didn't seem to pay any attention to it at all. One hell of a moment when it finally got back underneath her.

has their stream running in her office 24, along side another eagle stream, and a hummingbird stream.
Also at night she runs an owl stream

I really like the macro hatch-- it's something a lot of players don't do, but I really think they should adopt it. You simply can't spend all your larva with that many drones.

It's been announced! Next MLG will kick off with Naniwa vs Eagle. The event will be held in the nest though, due to connection issues at MLG's own venues. With a home field advantage for The Eagle I doubt Naniwa will be able to dominate it like Dallas.

The Results section isn't entirely a joke. There's a dead rabbit, crow and fish in the nest. The crow and fish were recent developments in the past hour or so. The father (or mother, can't really tell), came back with them.

I'm not sure, Wikipedia says that jackdaws are mainly found in Europe. These Eagles are in Iowa, USA. I'll update the OP if someone can properly identify it, but for the purposes of brevity, "Crow" lets people know that those black feathers are from dead prey.

The Eagles don't play Terran, Zerg, or Protoss.

They play Atreides.

I dunno how it started, but apparently the eagle stream came up as a statement against the poor quality of the MLG stream. The eagle stream has garnered over 100,000 viewers without crashing, with the viewers watching nothing more than an awesome eagle family sitting around. In comparison, there were a ton of awesome games going on at MLG that weren't casted due to lag or stream problems, thus allowing a clever few people to point out how the "mundane" eagle stream is able to get more viewers and be more stable compared to the atrocious MLG stream.

Since MLG failed so hardcore with their event people decided to fill the void with other things. At first someone linked a picture of a cat mid-air jumping across a river asking if he will make it. This got photo-shopped dozens of times and this was banned from the originally MLG Day 2 thread. Day 3 thread had same stream/lag problems. Someone linked an eagle stream and it got every popular because it was more entertaining than what MLG "wasn't" showing.

Or it could be exactly the same, 2 people talking while nothing actually happens.

Nice job HawaiinPig, I also enjoy watching eagles. It looks like the babies could be lifted out of the nest by the slightest breeze. I had to call my bud about it when the eagle was doing nest maintenance I was loving it so much.. :D

How big is the nest?
5-6 feet across, about the same deep; it weighs about 1½ tons.

That is a pretty heavy nest. Does this count only material they carry up? Because that seems like a decent amount of work to build a nest like that.

Grats to Eagles on the very rapid 3-kill, I certainly didn't expect such quick victories

Thats awesome that they are giving the TL community a shoutout, but how in God's name did they find out about this thread lol

The dude in charge of monitoring the camera was on the MLG thread because he was pissed about all the setbacks and problems

not to take anything away from the decorah eagles, but I was just reading this and it made me smile because my dad has a stream watching a pair of bald eagles that have been nesting on the property for about 2 years....I just checked again and they too have eaglets!

The nest is literally in a dead tree in the back yard at his house, and he rigged all the camera/mic gear himself.

Check it out if you want:

Can somebody enlighten me on why eagles suddenly became a hot topic? There is like 80,000 people watching these eagles, and apparently you'll get banned if you talk about them in MLG thread. Whats going on?

Someone posted it in an MLG thread on "that site", seems they were fascinated with the the irony of the 108k viewers vs a stream that has been offline and never showing any games the few times it wasn't. It really took off a few threads later.

It became a substitute for the MLG stream when it was offline or when JP/Wheat/Day had to talk for hours because they couldn't cast any games. It's pretty badass and those eaglets are cute as hell.

Started off as a little funsies to pass some time during MLG Dallas blackouts.
All joking and silly picture spam aside, these are some pretty impressive animals even when they are just sitting there keeping their babies warm and breeding.

A new day dawns for the eagle family.

The stream hits 60k viewers just around 7 AM CET.

Mother (or father?) eagle guards and warms her/his chicks quite intently. The songbirds are chirping, but are they wise to give away their existence to these fierce beasts?

The eagle parents switch places. The eagle that was nesting all night flies away as its companion feeds the chicks with the remains of what looks like a dead mammal, possibly a mouse!

Indeed. By investing in providing a heftier amount of resources, Daddy Eagle is insuring that the chicks are training up and preparing their +1 attack upgrade, which is going to be pivotal during the timing shortly after they research Flight. Mother Eagle seems to be scouting for more expos to raid, and I'm sure that she is +3/+3/+3 on everything.

The eagles hit the lr-thread of mlg day3 long before that post on the mlg forums was made.

I'd go as far to say that post was made by a tl-user.

One of 2:
Like the guy above said Eagles > esports
or
There's this thing called minimizing the window and checking it every now and then, and they are waiting to see the last egg hatch.

Nevertheless, this is the wierdest meme I've ever seen on a website. Eagle needs to macro more.

The eagle stream was getting 100k+ viewers even before the mlg links started. Theres a lot more non-gamers out there than there are gamers, and some people just want to see baby eagles hatching from their eggs. You don't get to see that to often.

Shall we start naming the eagles?

I propose that one of the chicks be named Flash. The other one, Jaedong.

The unhatched one is obviously Bisu.

The two adult eagles are obviously BoxeR and Yellow, the grandparents of modern T and Z respectively.

edit: I also propose that the dead crow be christened "Jaehoon."

That is all.

I had to use Google to convert 5-6 ft to meter (it's 1.5 to 1.8 m). A 1m x 1m x 1m cube of water weighs about 1 ton, so that 1.5 ton estimate seems realistic.

If u cant protect that many eagles at a time its probably a wise dessition to only let those survive wich are pretty well developt... still sad

Well they can both make it if there is enough food, but the third one is probably pretty much doomed.

A ton is 2000 pounds, IE: 3000 pounds, not 1500.
Edit: I also doubt the nest is filled with water, that seems really really heavy.

How big is the nest?
5-6 feet across, about the same deep; it weighs about 1½ tons.

Seems pretty heavy to me... O.o

Thanks for finding this though, very interesting to watch

I had to use Google to convert 5-6 ft to meter (it's 1.5 to 1.8 m). A 1m x 1m x 1m cube of water weighs about 1 ton, so that 1.5 ton estimate seems realistic.

so its 900+ kilos? okay im confused.

Anyways, I saw a white horse on the stream! No jokes!

1500 pounds = 680.388555 kilograms

wow i cant believe the nest is that heavy, especially with it being made from branches

Yeah the younger one seems kinda weak compared to the first baby, however i did see it eat a lot yesterday so it should make it until they get kicked out of the nest atleast.

Agreed. I don't want another Flash domination of Jaedong again, especially since Jaedong is looking quite promising. However, he often goes into a slump during April, but considering that his life is on the line here, I'm quite worried for the Tyrant.

At least they get to feast handsomely on the dead Air Force ACE groundhog/mammal thing.

The dead bird is old ... the brown furry thing looks like a groundhog or something similar. Birds dont have as much meat as mammals and bald eagles are pretty big.

He would have to sacrifice his ferrets in order to acquire the eagles.

You know. To free up supply and stuff.

I also like how the mother eagle is trying to rearrange and tidy up the nest all the time. It's like trying to lift off your Terran buildings from time to time just to make your base look nicer and a bit different every few minutes.

daddy eagle is back possibly looking to strengthen the walls with extra twigs and such to prevent possible wind bust on their main.

Eagle's got his main pretty much secured. But Wind is pushing up a strong contain. I'm confident Eagle will manage to break out of this one eventually though.

This stream has consistently had over 100k viewers at any given time for weeks at least, so the viewer count has nothing really to do with MLG. It was actually featured on CBS News and Forbes after they found out about the 100k+ live viewers.

Sunday.

The stream was already this big ... and it goes down to about 30k viewers overnight. If only they had a sponsor they could make a lot of money for a good cause.

Yes, the Eagle is the BattleCruiser to the Muskrats Zergling.

Anyone know what it is in the top left corner on that field? I thought it was horses but they look very stationary.

Ok, I've been watching the eagle shift around in its nest for the past hour and it's incredibly mesmerizing. It's such a beautiful creature -- our country's national bird as well -- and I've never seen one before outside of the ones printed on money.

No man!

That Dad is off completely decimating the forest team, by the time the baby eagles have to rotate in they are going to only need one or two kills to achieve total victory in the Forest League.

One looks like a crow, the other seems to be a gopher or something. The eagle appears to have eaten its ass.

Dad came back earlier this morning bringing home the bacon (aka muskrat, giant brown animal you see). That may be daddy eagle sitting at the nest actually, unless I missed something today =P. Mommy eagle is the one thats out atm. Rest of the food in the nest include a crow, rabbit, and fish/trout.

Cool article about the baby eagles, yo.
http://www.grindtv.com/outdoor/blog/25655/bald eagle pair and hatchlings become an internet sensation/

The popularity of two American bald eagles in Decorah, Iowa, is soaring, thanks to a web-cam that over the weekend streamed live footage of two of their three eggs being hatched. The third egg is expected to hatch any time. A YouTube video (below) of the first slow hatch, which occurred Friday and Saturday, has garnered nearly 300,000 views. The baby eagle first appears, through a tiny hole in the shell, at the 4:40 mark. It's is seen out of the shell at 8:03.

The second hatch (see video below) occurred Sunday. Pay close attention at the 7:30 mark and again, when the furry little eagle comes clearly into view, at 8:08.

Bob Anderson, director of the Raptor Rescue Project, which installed the baseball-sized camera near the nest, told CBS News that since the first egg was laid in February, the Ustream live footage has been viewed by 11 million people from 130 countries. On Friday, as the first egg began to hatch, more than 111,000 computers were watching the live camera at the same time.

Viewers are able to monitor the everyday movements of the eagles, which don't seem to mind being the invasion of privacy. (This is, after all, the reality TV era).

"These eagle cams touch many people in many different ways... it's amazing," Anderson said.

The popularity of the streaming video is so amazing that, at times, it has overwhelmed the system. Be sure to keep an eye on the Ustream link if you'd like to witness the third egg hatching. Here's the second hatch:

It's a truly majestic animal. This is an extremely rare view into the beginning of the fourth family for these two eagles. This is not something you would normally see even on The Discovery Channel. This is as close as you will probably ever get to seeing this. Now you can be unimpressed with it if you care nothing about animals, that's on you, but i think the sheer amount of viewers they have, even during nighttime (40k~) show that this is something quite special to behold.

God those chicklets look soooo cute.

Hummingbirds focus too much on tactics. Eagles just got the solid strategy down, with the mechanics to support it.

Hummingbirds play Dawn of War 2, a tactical game at best.

Eagles play Starcraft, the game of champions.

What exactly garnered the popularity over the weekend? Was it really because of MLG not being able to handle a stream so us gamers flocked to the Eagles as a joke? I'm assuming that's what happened, but it would be nice to know for sure.

It was basically a joke from the MLG failure, but apparently 4chan was also involved in the joke after /v/ had to suffer through the MLG stream fail that us TLers also had to suffer through, so they are also probably a major source of this semi-meme.

However, the stream was already getting 100k viewers even before MLG, and apparently, the Youtube video of the hatching chicks quickly got 300k views. The influx of TL and /v/ people seemed to have boosted that number by a bit, but unfortunately we may not have been the main, original source of the popularity. I assume that the stream had gone viral through more conventional channels before finding its way onto TL.

Go eagles!!!! [Too bad they didnt even manage to write "Decorah" correctly in the article ...]

Cant wait for the drama when the younglings are teenagers and start fighting over food (if the second one does get the strength and doesnt die soon).

Sadly the way it looked means that the firstborn does beat up the second born and thus will most likely deny food for it.

It actually looks like it's about to hatch, by the way the camera is zooming in on it.

Feeding time ... looks like the firstborn takes it all because the secondborn is just too weak to claim his share (even though he is calling for food). The parent doesnt remember who already got something and goes for the closest one and the secondborn really has to call out for it.

I saw the secondborn get some food about a hour ago, she seems to feed whoever is closest.

You rarely see these birds anymore. And when you did its unbelievable these birds are gorgeous and also the perfect hunters. But to catch a glimpse of a couple hatching eggs and raising them is hardly seen if not at all. Eagle win it 3-0

I hope the eagle mom and dad are good enough to get all of them fed. Though I think it's quite natural not all of them to survive.

Media coverage.

I think the important upside here is that a stream getting 130k viewers apparently makes something newsworthy enough to get covered by the New York Times. Clearly that's a bar that Starcraft should be able to clear, right?

In the description it says:
When were the eggs laid in 2010, and when did they hatch?
First egg was February 25, second on February 28, third on March 5. First hatch was April 3, second on April 6, third on April 9. All three eaglets fledged and are now on the wing but are not being tracked.

If all three made it last year they can surely do it this year

One eaglet is clearly weaker and passive than the other, but I saw one of the parents feed both of them thoroughly earlier today. They seem to have quite a healthy food supply up there so I don't see why they'd starve one of their child to death, unless it was particularly feeble.

Haha sweet. Pretty sure we've had Starcraft streams that rival or exceed these numbers, or maybe my memory is hazy...

A couple thousand people watching a a mogulus stream of the BW finals felt like a hell of a lot at the time.

5-6 feet across, about the same deep; it weighs about 1½ tons.

I had to use Google to convert 5-6 ft to meter (it's 1.5 to 1.8 m). A 1m x 1m x 1m cube of water weighs about 1 ton, so that 1.5 ton estimate seems realistic.

According to wikipedia, the eagle was actually picked because the founders of the colonies saw similarities with the Roman Republic, which used a lot of eagle imagery. But I agree, awesome looking creature :D

How big is the nest?
5-6 feet across, about the same deep; it weighs about 1½ tons.

Silly american measurements translated for the metric master race:
1.5-1.8 metres across, about the same deep; it weighs about 680 kilograms.

I had no clue that the nest is that heavy, pretty astonishing.
Also I would never have thought of that many people watching this stream.

A ton is actually a regular metric unit for measuring weight ...

1 Ton: 2000 pounds(United States/Canada: Short Ton) or 2240 pounds(Great Britain: Long Ton) =/= 1 Metric Ton(Tonne): 1000 Kilograms.

Although a Long Ton and a Metric Ton are almost the same 1016 kg vs 1000 kg.

So the nest probably weighs about 1360 kg, assuming the original figure is in Short Tons.

No. The 3rd egg is laid a week after the other 2, so the 3rd with hatch around a week later, which would be around the upcoming weekend.

Just some info from the "eagle chat":
The third egg was apparently laid a week after the second one and it has started to be opened now. The "guys in the know" arent worried that the third one will not get enough food since these eagles have raised 8 eaglets in the last 3 years ... so exciting times are up ahead!

Kind of random, but I couldn't stop laughing when I thought of this. The minute the dad showed up with the fish I randomly thought, "Dad's Home."

I find myself watching this stream way too much. I don't like, stare at it intently, but it's just on so frequently in the background of whatever I'm doing while I occasionally tab back onto it to see what's going down.

edit: New fish as well?

Didn't even rotate. Eat and fly away =( poor other eagle, seemed like he wanted that the other one switches with him.

Pretty sure that was the male eagle, since he seemed smaller than the one sitting down (I think that's mentioned in the FAQ, I could be wrong though since they both incubate).

Edit: lol, I guess it's hard to tell the difference in sizes when they're not at the same distance from the camera

Got got a nice view for a good 15-20 seconds. Man that thing is small.. and the others have already doubled its size.

On a related note the results need updating due to daddy eagle being chuck norris.

It is nighttime in Iowa and one of the younglings has crawled halfway out from under the parent (the right half btw.).

i believe they just leave the dead animal corpses buried under the nest, not sure if they can withstand the stench though but who knows

Sigh. Here we go again.

Eagles haven't been around that long compared to other lifeforms on Earth and already people are demanding Mother Nature nerf them. For god's sake, people, lets wait it out a bit and see how things play out. Remember when mosquitoes came out and everyone was screaming "wtf, they spread diseases and they multiply worse than rabbits, nerf nerf!!" Well guess what, we all found ways to deal with them: mosquito nets, bug spray, don't build your house in a marsh, etc.

I can't believe the short attention spans and impatience of players nowadays. Back in the old days we let the dinosaurs play out for millions of years before the great reboot. Now a mere hundred thousand years and people are already demanding changes.

If anything its the bedbug that needs to be nerfed. The fucking thing can live a full year without eating. Seriously, mother nature? A year?

Typical gill breathers and mammalians to cry out nerf. Sure, eagles can fly, but rabbits can build caves and a fish can breath under Water. How imba is this? And always remember the big white fish...

Can you actually tell it's the momma? The Q&A makes it seem like the parents are virtually identical, the female being larger and then slightly different facial features. A better angle to view the babies and parent sleeping than some of the other nights which is nice.

Momma always spends the nights with the babies. Plus if you read the description, Momma has the brow ridge and shadow around her eyes. It's hard to see in the IR nighttime image, but it is there.

well the eagles apparently never dealt with the snow while having eaglets. that's what the stream dudes have said in the chat. the snow itself won't be a problem as the eagles have a very high body temperature and can keep the eaglets warm. but what's more worrying is that they haven't fed them since like 10 hours.

79k viewers atm. gonna grow with time again. it dropped yesterday after they removed the social stream chat, but they opened it again.

This stream is of the Decorah, Iowa eagles. The one that got hit by a plane was from Virginia

Was that confirmed official by the Raptor Resource Foundation? Are they gonna rescue the little ones, or just leave them there?

Not even slightly amusing, sad you had to edit that in too.

Our eagles are just fine. Way to OP to get taken out by a silly little airplane.

It says that eagle was at the Norfolk Botanical Garden in Virginia, whereas the stream link in the OP is for the fish hatchery in Decorah, Iowa.

Sad nonetheless.

Well ofc the stream is still up. It's not like it was made just for MLG.

Surprised how fast the babies are growing. I saw them change feather colors but their feathers look more like an eagle now as opposed to a black feathered (fluff feathered) baby eagle. They just look small and not the right color scheme compared to an actual bald eagle now.

Everythings good to go, the eagles have stockpiled extra awesomeness and cuteness over the last few days, just in case MLG fucks up. Either case I'll be checking into their stream once in a while.. like I did the entire last two months. :D

Still super windy I see. At least the offspring are much larger now - how long will it be until they take flight?

The future is to have these kinds of stream on high quality on wall mounted framed monitors. Paintings of tomorrow! Wildlife is truly beautiful and don't say "durrr just look out the window", this is a unique insight into something we'd have to disturb to see otherwise.

I'm afraid our Eaglets won't be around for the next MLG. They jumped out onto the Branch this morning which means they'll be fledging (IE leaving the nest) soon. So if you want one last view of the Eaglets, get it while you can.

I'm not the right person to make a new thread, but I just wanted to let y'all know -

Eagles, Season Two is coming up fast!

Currently: we're apparently on Egg Watch, whatever that means.

Eagle mom went for a fast three hatch this time around, as well - must be her standard order.

It's a really popular stream in general, during the worst parts of MLG that stream had way over 150k viewers =)
..and it's up 24/7 almost all year

Personally I find it so peaceful to just watch them be. It's a really great project getting some great results.
The eaglets in the topic is from last years hatch btw. Atm the first egg is just about to crack.
