Squashing free elections, mass civilian casualties once they crushed the Muslim Brotherhood in that square, and don't forget about Peter Greste and the other jailed journalists. Also mass trials of Muslim Brotherhood members resulting in mass death penalties. I get the whole anti-MB thing they have going on, but you can't just crush them all, jail them all, and execute them. That's just a few reasons I guess. https://www.facebook.com/FreedomForPeterGreste http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/22/world/middleeast/egyptian-court-confirms-death-penalty-for-muslim-brotherhood-defendants.html?_r=0 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_2013_Rabaa_massacre Edit: le spelling

What imortal said is true and good to understand, but isn't relevant to US policy, really. We support lots of crazies and dictators to the hilt.

France will keep delivering arms to Kurds fighting the Islamic State group in Syria, said President Francois Hollande as battles were raging between the two groups in Kobani, near Turkey. The French government will "do everything to help" those fighting against the Islamic State group, especially the Kurds, by delivering "adapted weaponry," Hollande said Wednesday, according to government spokesman Stephane Le Foll. He didn't specify which arms France will deliver. France was the first country to join the U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State group in Iraq, but it doesn't take part in Syrian airstrikes. Honestly, the more any Turkish politician emulates Ataturk at this point, the more the West is gonna be on board with him. Right or wrong. Policymakers are very divided on this, and so our policy is likewise. Muslim Brotherhood did a lot to piss us off. Then Sisi showed up, we gave him the benefit of doubt, hoping he'd restore civil society. Instead he reestablished the Mubarak regime. So we're torn; on one side the idealists who were really excited about being able to be allied with nicer Middle Eastern regimes (and get rid of that nasty contradiction in values that gets brought up so often) and on the other side the realists who are just happy there's a strong strongman at the helm (who happens to be very much on Israel's side). All of this results in a contradictory policy on things like military aid.

Saud al-Faisal seems to have regained control of Saudi foreign policy, after months of talk about the dominance of the wing led by King Abdullah, who has been out of sight for some time for reasons some say are health related. In all cases, the result is the same: the road between Riyadh and Tehran is closed until further notice. In less than a month, Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal made two different statements regarding relations with Iran: The first was ambivalent, albeit it had an optimistic tone, while the second was escalatory, and perhaps best reflects the true sentiments of Saud al-Faisal personally. In the bilateral meeting that brought Faisal together with his Iranian counterpart Javad Zarif in New York, on the sidelines of the 69th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations on September 21, Zarif came across as too optimistic, even considering the meeting the beginning of a “new chapter” in the relations between Tehran and Riyadh. Zarif went further and said the meeting would have a positive impact on efforts to restore peace in the region and the world, and safeguard the interests of all Islamic nations. Saud al-Faisal’s statement was similar in tone. Faisal said, “Iran and Saudi Arabia are among the influential countries in the region,” adding that cooperation “between Tehran and Riyadh could help promote peace and security in the region and the world.” Yet the Saudi minister did not stop there, and continued in a “loaded” manner, “The mistakes of the past must be avoided, so that it may become possible to end the crises afflicting the region.” Zarif also mentioned a visit he would make to Riyadh soon, to continue consultations with the Saudi side, following a visit by Deputy Foreign Minister Hussein Amir Abdel-Lahian in August. Really good read about the battle in Kobani: READ: Kobane Diary: 4 Days Inside the City Fighting an Unprecedented Resistance Against ISIS IMPORTANT: US airstrikes have killed 'several hundred' ISIS fighters in Kobani. + Show Spoiler + US: Hundreds of ISIL rebels killed in Kobane Pentagon says air strikes killed several hundred ISIL fighters, but says Syrian town could still fall to rebel group. US-led air strikes have killed several hundred Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) fighters around the Syrian town of Kobane, the Pentagon said, but it cautioned that the town near Turkey's border could still fall to the Sunni rebel group. The US-led coalition launched about 40 air strikes on the mainly Kurdish town of Kobane in the past 48 hours, the largest number since the strikes inside Syria began on September 22. Rear Admiral John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman, said bad weather in Iraq had freed up coalition firepower to attack Kobane targets. But he added the situation was fluid, with the Kurdish militia still controlling the town, although with pockets held by ISIL fighters. "The more they want it, the more resources they apply to it, the more targets we have to hit," Kirby said, adding: "We know we've killed several hundred of them." The strikes, he added, had degraded ISIL's ability to move around forces and sustain themselves, "and it's not like they have a whole heck of a lot of ability to reconstitute that". src Also: http://www.rappler.com/world/regions/middle-east/72118-battles-is-obama-consult-leaders MORE AMERICANS FAVOR US GROUND FORCES IN IRAQ/SYRIA ACCORDING TO POLL: + Show Spoiler + More and more Americans say combat ground troops need to be deployed to take the fight to the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), according to a recent poll conducted by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal. Approximately 41% of Americans surveyed said the military campaign against ISIS should include “air strikes and combat troops,” compared with the 35% who said the offensive should be constrained to aerial bombardments. Of the individuals polled, just 15% said they believed no military action should be taken against the radical Islamist group. src 100 US MILITARY ADVISERS GO TO BASES IN ANBAR TO ASSIST IRAQI FORCES: + Show Spoiler + Baghdad, Oct 15 (IANS): Dozens of US military advisors arrived in Iraq Wednesday to train the country's security forces as they continue to face obstacles in their fight against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, officials said. In western Iraq, up to 100 US advisors arrived at two air bases in the volatile province of Anbar and are expected to start training of the Iraqi troops to battle IS militants, who have seized large parts of the province, Sabah Karhout, head of the provincial council, told reporters. "Habaniyah air base in east of the provincial capital city of Ramadi and Asad air base near the town of Baghdadi, received 100 US military advisors," Xinhua quoted Karhout as saying. "The US advisors will train and advise the Iraqi troops, including police and government-backed tribal fighters, in their fight against the Islamic State in the militant-seized cities and towns in the Anbar province," he added. src IRAQI PM COMMENTS ON CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS: + Show Spoiler + Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi dismissed fears of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) advancing into the capital Baghdad during a speech to a graduating class of military officers cadets in the city of Nasiriyah in southern Iraq on Wednesday. “Baghdad is safer than it was before as we have expanded the security checkpoints and barriers, while ISIS is very far away from the capital,” the prime minister said. “Iraq’s security forces have struck heavy blows against ISIS, forcing it to the point where it is issuing these false rumors. The current circumstances demonstrate that Iraq’s security apparatus is a force that is to be reckoned with,” Abadi added. Abadi’s comments came on the day that the US Defense Department announced that its anti-ISIS operation in Iraq and Syria was named “Inherent Resolve,” according to international media. US warplanes have been striking ISIS targets in Iraq and Syria for weeks, although it is unclear how effective the campaign has been as ISIS continues to advance in both countries. “The majority of Diyala province and large parts of Salah Al-Din province are now under control of the security forces,” the Iraqi prime minister said on Wednesday. In previous comment to Asharq Al-Awsat, a prominent Salah Al-Din tribal chief Sheikh Khamis Al-Jabara confirmed that ISIS’s advance into the central province had stalled. Abadi pledged that “Iraqi security forces will defend every city of Iraq that is subject to terrorism and will continue to pursue efforts to liberate cities [under ISIS control],” calling for greater “regional and international cooperation to combat terrorism.” src ANOTHER POSSIBLE SIEGE ON AMARIYAT AL-FALLUJAH; REINFORCEMENTS TO RAMADI: + Show Spoiler + Fighters from the Islamic State were mustering with tanks, armored vehicles and heavy weapons on Wednesday near a strategically located rural town about 25 miles west of Baghdad in the embattled province of Anbar, local officials said. The militants were approaching the town from three directions — north, west and east — through surrounding farmland, and they appeared to be preparing a siege, the officials said. “The situation is dangerous here,” said Sheikh Faisal al-Esawi, the director of the town, Amariyat al-Falluja, and a leader of the Albu Esa tribe. By nightfall, no shots had been fired, but the situation remained very tense, officials said. The Sunni militant group Islamic State, also known by the acronyms ISIS or ISIL, has been on the offensive throughout Anbar Province in recent weeks. It has scored a series of tactical victories and bedeviled the Iraqi security forces and their coalition partners, who have had limited success in reversing the militants’ gains. Islamic State has tried twice in the past month to lay siege to Amariyat al-Falluja, about 10 miles south of Falluja, but the Iraqi police and military, in collaboration with members of the Albu Esa tribe, blocked their advance. .... The Iraqi military command deployed about 500 soldiers and police officers to Ramadi on Monday to reinforce troops stationed there. The reinforcements arrived with artillery and an armored unit that included tanks, said Ahmed Hamid, head of the security commission for the Anbar provincial council. src SHITTONS OF KILLED ISIS FIGHTERS IN IRAQ ALLEGEDLY REPORTED in various places in Iraq: + Show Spoiler + But I need to study for an 8 am exam so all of that stuff will have to wait mates.

Intensified airstrikes on the Syrian border town of Kobani have forced the Islamic State group to retreat as Kurdish forces regained control of areas lost earlier this week, according to media reports. In the last 48 hours, hundreds of ISIS militants have reportedly been killed in airstrikes carried out by the United States-led coalition. “Maybe in the few past days (Islamic State) was controlling about 40 percent of the city of Kobani, but now... less than 20 percent of the city is under their control,” Idriss Nassan, a local Kurdish official, told BBC late on Wednesday. “Today YPG started cleaning operations in the east and south-east of Kobani.” YPG is a group of Kurdish fighters engaged in battle with ISIS militants in the strategic border town. Meanwhile, violent clashes between Kurdish fighters and militants of the Islamic State group were also reported in the town's northwest amid overnight airstrikes in the region, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
