Wouldn't have been tolerated 50 years ago, but i guess that's "progress"
That sure didn't have racist undertones in it at all. And by didn't I meant man the fuck up and deal with it.
My girlfriend brought up some great points when I showed her this video:
1. At least she's not singing about sex, drugs, and drinking like every other vapid pop star. 2. At least she's not dressed like a slut like every other female pop star.
I can't disagree there. As much as I hate the song, at least there's some relatively innocent music out there for young kids to enjoy (as only young kids can) without filling their heads with terrible messages.
THIS, is the definition of pussy-whipped.
May God have mercy on your soul.....
You're kidding, right?
Because the opinion of a highly-educated, intelligent and thoughtful woman, gave me insight into the situation that my knee-jerk reaction hadn't considered, I'm "pussy whipped?"
Wow, congrats to the lucky girl that ends up with you.
And to all those saying "Miley Cyrus/Lindsay Lohan started out innocent" it's true - they did; but just because they're total fuck-ups doesn't mean this kid has to be too. There are other pop-stars out there who manage to keep it together despite the pressure to be completely objectified.
I still think that if I had a 12 year old daughter, I'd rather her listen to this than the other trash out there.

Yeah, why did the Beatles and the Eagles have to write such filthy, corrupting shit for music?
Regardless of the amount of vulgarities in it, the song is as devoid of meaning/emotion/feeling as all the other terrible music. Some of the best music, however, stems from drugs, sex and drinking. Think about Green Day now (terrible) compared to when they use to lock themselves in a room, get hammered and write songs. At 13, 23, 53, 103 years old, Basketcase is still an infinitely better song than 21 Guns.
If the argument is that those songs send a damaging message to young girls while this doesn't, I'm not sure I agree with that either. Leaving people vapid is no good and in the realm of love songs, Taylor Swift is innocent as hell, and her songs are as detrimental as can be. Certainly more than Lady Gaga or Christina Aguilara.
Also, the comparison to Britney Spears/NSync/etc. really isn't apt. Not only could Britney Spears actually sing, but she could dance and she was unbelievably hot. This is none of those.
Let's be realistic. Most 13 year old girls aren't listening to the Beatles or the Eagles.
A quick scan of the top 40 music out there right now, and definitely on the most popular radio station in my area (which panders to tweens), will give a good indication that most of what is played on there is crap like Kesha, and whatever other flavour-of-the-month pop star is singing the joys of clubs, drinking, partying, and gettin' laid. Rawr!
I also didn't say that this is "good", nor did my girlfriend. I just said that it's probably a better alternative than something like Kesha, for example. I highly doubt that any parent would prefer their daughter to listen to songs about drugs, alcohol and what-not so that their children have a better grasp on the artistic prowess of the songwriters. Save that shit for when they're old enough to figure it out themselves.
I also have to add, if Taylor Swift's music is more detrimental to a young girl than the imagery and lyrics of Lady Gaga or Christina Aguilera, I would love to hear that argument articulated.

Taylor Swift's music is about being a little girl and relying on a man to find happiness. Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera are about controlling your own life.
Vulgarities and sex are already well known by most 13 year olds. Ke$ha might be bad, but I don't see how a song about sex really corrupts most kids that age. I was like 9 or 10 when my friend's older brother first played Smash for us and we all got hooked on Bad Habit.

I have to say that I disagree with that assessment, although I'm sure you don't want to hear why. I don't mean that in an offensive way, either; just that we both probably have little interest in picking out lyrics that prove our points (and I'm not interested enough in Taylor Swift to defend her).

i wouldn't be as much of an asshole as the other guy but you're actually acknowledging that as if it somehow gives the music video value and appreciating your girlfriend's haphazard attempt to not insult the girl as if it were some kind of stroke of sage wisdom.
reality check, one song not talking about what most people think, talk and make music about does not hide them from what most people think, talk and make music about. if that didn't make you look whipped, you wrote a huge thing in response to a bait comment, jumping to her aid... just sayin
so, anyways, this song... i think i've settled on #1 worst song i've ever heard in my entire life that was made to be serious. i don't think this is a troll, there is an entire label behind this of other terrible child singers, but this is the worst of all of them that i've heard

She's also an eighth-grader, apparently. I think I can forgive her.
Agreed. If anything, her parents are fools for letting things get this far.

Heh, ummm, no. I'm not doing anything of the sort. All I did was say that my girlfriend offered insight that I hadn't considered. I thought I'd share it to add some new perspective other than the "HOLY SHIT SHE SUCKS!" that was going on. Don't get me wrong, either - it sucks.
I did take issue with the notion that just because I valued my girlfriend's opinion, I'm "pussy-whipped." When whoever-it-was called me pussy whipped, I didn't think my girlfriend's opinion added any greater value to the video or song, nor was it "sage advice", only that she wasn't some talking out her ass to defend some little girl she doesn't know... But whatever. Trolls will be trolls.
Bigger reality check - not every 13 year old girl thinks about sex, drugs, and whoring it up at clubs. Nobody said this one song was the salvation for all young girls out there - just that it's a better alternative, and likely and example of an entire realm of alternatives, for parents to encourage their daughters to listen to other than some scantily-clad bint singing about getting wasted and how great it is to piss away your life in a club.

At first I didn't really understand the post you quoted, then after you mentioned the racist undertones it does make sense. Fairly amusing the part the poster finds most offensive about the video is a black guy in it.
Regardless of anyone's opinion, she is going to be rich as fuck off of this one song. Most of the time having terrible lyrics, making a cheesy video, but having a really good beat to a song is a recipe for success. The fact that her voice isn't that great is irrelevant. One hit wonder? Yes. 15 minutes of fame? Yes. Her actually continuing a career as a singer? NO.
