Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.
Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more about the power plant since the initial happenings. If there is a large radiation leak, then that could potentially effect the entire pacific ocean right? I live in CA and I worry about all the seafood and beaches being poisoned. Is that even possible?
Better not be. I take pride in my beaches and seafood >: ( !!!
There's probably still news about the nuclear plant disaster in Japanese news, assuming the Japanese government is now okay with being more open with that topic, but it's far enough ago (and there are no serious developments) that it probably wouldn't be making big news elsewhere.
This excellent chart by XKCD might be relevant/useful to anyone not familiar with radiation levels and what they mean in a useful every day perspective.
Tepco has dumped radiated waters straight into pacific ocean which caused outrage from korea and china. I dont know how long they have done that for, but i heard seafood businesses in japan has taken a massive hit because of that. Not sure if people living in ca has to worry tho, probably not I would assume.
TOKYO, Sept 24 (Reuters) - Japan found the first case of rice with radioactive materials far exceeding a government-set level for a preliminary test of pre-harvested crop, requiring thorough inspection of the rice to be harvested from the region, the farm ministry said late on Friday.
The ministry said radioactive caesium of 500 becquerels per kg was found in a sample of the pre-harvested rice in Nihonmatsu city, in Fukushima Prefecture, 56 km (35 miles) west of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant which was crippled by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, triggering the world's worst nuclear disaster in 25 years.
The ministry said the Fukushima Prefecture will expand the inspection spots nearly ten-fold to around 300 areas.
It is the first case in Japan of rice containing radioactive caesium exceeding 200 becquerels per kg, a level which requires further thorough testing of the area for the harvested rice.
The government introduced inspection guidelines in August, with preliminary tests followed by more before approving shipments.
If preliminary tests found rice to contain radioactive caesium levels of 200 becquerels per kg or more, the crop will be tested more thoroughly before approvals are made for shipments.
If the level of caesium in rice exceeded the government-imposed cap of 500 becquerels per kg, shipments from locally produced rice will be halted.
So far, no rice crop has been banned for shipments.
Japan is set to announce that engineers have brought the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant to a "cold shut-down condition", nine months after the earthquake and tsunami.
PM Yoshihiko Noda is expected to make the announcement later on Friday.
Declaring a cold shut-down condition is seen as a key milestone in efforts to bring the plant under control.
But the government says it will take decades to completely dismantle the plant.
The six-reactor Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was badly damaged by the 11 March earthquake and tsunami. Blasts occurred at four of the reactors after waves knocked out vital cooling systems.
Workers at the plant, which is operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco), have been using sea water to cool the reactors. Waste water has built up and some contaminated liquid has been released into the sea.
A 20km (12m) exclusion zone remains in place around the plant.
Ooh I remember getting banned in this thread 1 day after the earthquake by Manifesto for telling him the truth. With a background in physics and knowing to who to listen It was real ugly to see the propaganda go around. Especially when the nuclear lobby stuff went viral and people felt people were fear mongering.
Big challenge trying to explain a nuclear disaster to laymen here on TL and then getting hit by the banhammer and the following months having to find out the mods were wrong, and you were right.

Suisen was just temp banned for 2 weeks by EvilTeletubby.

All this thread I have been correction people's posts, including yours, explaining views, hammering down the same essential points, politely. And now you say this?
No. Subjective and objective morality are two different positions to take. It's not a debate of semantics. Just because people vote the wrong way because they don't understand doesn't mean it is.
In about 90% of your posts you are an idiot.
You're an idiot. You have two prior bans for this exact type of aggressive behavior, and you apparently lack the ability to learn from prior mistakes. This is your last shot, let's see if you have it in you or not.
guess your degree in physics didnt teach you common sense
Well, there's a lot of idiots on the internet. If you want to run a popular website and forum you have to make certain concessions towards that.
Fact remains I was trying to convince people who believed no radiation could leak that a meltdown was not impossible when in fact at that time there already was a complete meltdown in 1 reactor and 2 others were in the process of melting. You can go and read back things like "Don't trust the US media, they are fearmongering by using the word 'meltdown' in the headline', 'people, there is nothing more to be worried about, they have shut down the reactor' or 'you aren't possibly implying this can be as worse as deepwater horizon', 'nothing can go wrong, there is a containment. They didn't have one at Chernobyl' etc. But most of all I liked the one 'The pacific can't possibly dry up so cooling is not an issue'.
Had a lot of patience with them. But then Manifesto came to shit up the thread.

I don't see your point. US media was, is, fearmongering without much knowledge of the subject. Just because this time they happened to be correct does not imply they knew what they were talking about or that they will be correct during many more events of the future where they will try to paint the scariest possible situation.
Remember guys this is a disaster of the same scale as Chernobyl. I don't think the radiation will be going away any time soon and the type of radiation leaked takes thousands, if not, millions of years to decay.
I suspect that most Japanese products are now contaminated with nuclear radiation and the situation is not really improving... just recently Meiji was caught for having their baby milk contaminated with radiation (I think they said the levels were quite low although significant enough for reporting the issue). But heck, I wouldn't be touching anything contaminated by radiation from a nuclear meltdown. Well it's not surprising that many Japanese products are now contaminated, and I wouldn't be surprised if the levels are actually much higher because Japanese media and the government tend to view things in a more optimistic way (not good for those living in Japan or consuming Japanese products).

I dont know what to think about that. Do you say that because you underestimate the effect of Chernobyl or because you feel that people underestimate effects of Fukushima?

The only thing to think about it is that it's factually wrong. Since Fukushima released about 1/5 th of the radiations Chernobyl did.
Japan's a much smaller country than Chernobyl, so even if your claim that Fukushima released 1/5th of the radiation of Chernobyl, the effects will be very similar.
