As per title what is your favorite song and music overall maybe after like 25 pages or so ill make a poll with the most frequent ones.
Mine has to be from ocarina of time and the hard part is picking one.
Most awe inspiring would be Song of Time just because hearing it makes me feel like a god damn Hero. But overall GTA Vice City the soundtrack introduced me to so much different music
Man... I really cannot decide. There are just too many that I love to death. Hundreds of 'em. I'm a huge fan of video game music. It's probably something from Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Banjo-Kazooie or Final Fantasy though.
This is not counting blogs...and only using the search words game and music not how the first one is titled Your Favorite Game Music? and last post was November 01 2010 00:58 He just pointing out one with a long and full OP
On December 11 2010 15:07 PiousMartyr wrote: FFXI had incredible music. I used to keep my character logged into one of my old computers and blast the music because I liked it so much.
FFXI really did have awesome music. Whereas every other MMORPG I've ever played has had generic background filler for a soundtrack, FFXI's music brought life to the world. So many beautiful tracks. Zi'Tah was my favorite; too bad it was one of the most useless zones in the game.
Close second would be the Warcraft 2 Human 1 Theme but it has been posted already.
dude...totally forgot about that theme... but you're sooo right! listening to this song instantly reminds me of hours and hours wasted invested in videogame-experiences with friends and foes
really interesting how i see whole weekends floating by, just by listening to old themes while with newer themes i don't really have any connection (regardless of how awesome the sound is)
I love the Ace Attorney series and the music is no exception. It really helps setting the mood for the game. I especially love the Ace Attorney Investigation themes. It has so awesome character theme songs.

I would have to say the Terran music when your playing Sc2 or Grand theft auto's music because there is so much different songs one could choose to play.
I love the sound and atmosphere they went for scoring F-Zero. Just fits so perfectly. It's like they took the best of jazz fusion from American artists like Chick Corea and threw some rock in there.
There's millions of other songs I could post, I'm just going to cut my contributions short there
No wait I take it back
After playing this game, this theme was the one I was humming the most afterwards.
aaaah so many good games! seriously tho guys, WTF? how is it possible that NO ONE has yet posted the hyrule field theme of Zelda: OOT? so epic! so adventurous! shame on all of you for not posting it.
the eerie and ethereal "silence before the storm" from FFX is also one of the greats.

I know, I was thinking about this the other day. Sadly it is probably because we grew up. Metallic Mario!
Yeah, most of my favorites have popped up in this thread. The Donkey Kong Country game OSTs were amazing. And I once saw a blog post by a guy who didn't think the music fit Metroid Prime very well... I wanted to kick him in the shins forever. Deus Ex, check. Mario RPG, check. Megaman 2, check. This thread is going to keep me busy
After checking through this thread I realized there's too much good music to fit in one post. All of the Megaten games had amazing soundtrack, FFX had, in my opinion, by far the best FF soundtrack. The Terran theme from Brood war is also amazing, some of the pokemon tunes were also awesome, like the Gen1 tune when you're on the bike.
This still needs more actually. DOOM 2 OST. None of my brothers could get past level 10 on ultra violence and I fucking finished the whole thing I think I was 12 or so. FUCK YEAH BITCHES.
A lot of the doom music was from other bands but it was all 100% quality. Just posting 2 is a teaser really.
Final fantasy is amazing. Here's some of my favourites.
Wow, glad to see TL has some musical taste, I was going to post a lot of these. Video game music has always been a secret pleasure of mine and has its fair share of my library. Here are a few great ones I didn't see yet:
Really impressive that this was produced during the SNES days.
FF has a reputation for its music, but there's one in particular that deserves a category all its own from both the FF series and the other video game series as well. The best video game soundtrack I've encountered....
We're missing a lot of core songs here still Star Control 2:
Gradius:
Salamander:
Ecco2 (terrible game but this was a great song)
PS4:
Am I the only one that really feels like we lost something great moving away from those old FM chips and replacing most game music with heavily orchestrated stuff? I mean there is a time and a place for that but I want my chip tunes back
Here is a mix I made few monthes ago. It's quite a mood setter, going dark, strange and ending on a positive but weird note after a speech of Arcturus Mengst
Here's a couple of good ones. Most of the ones I'd want to post are already here, so here's a couple of ones that I didn't see, from Hunter Hunted. The game was simply "meh". Was fun, memorable, but nothing to write home about. Except the music is badass.
So many great songs have already been posted, yet I managed to remember one game with awesome music that hasn't been posted yet (the only game I ever sold, and still regret it :<)
So many reapeats in here. I can't believe no one posted more Metroid Prime music....I remember when the regular overworld music changed to this and I was like "Holy shit! Why couldn't it have been like this for the whole game??"
And now for some WoW music....some of the symphonic stuff is really fantastic. This one literally makes me stop and listen every time it pops up in Storm Peaks. Try 1:50, it'll give you chills:
And this one you usually don't hear 'cause you're raiding, but it's just....epic.

I cant even begin to describe how much I absolutely LOVE Paper Mario. Holy shit. There was a period in my life where I just sat and played 3-4 hours straight paper mario each day I got home from school. And the music was totally baller awesome as well thanks for linking this
Besides Starcraft/Starcraft 2 themes obviously Dragon Age : Origins Main Theme, The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Gerudo Valley, Kingdom Hearts 2 Sanctuary, Diablo Tristan village, Devil May Cry Coal Chamber, Donkey Kong Country Gang Plank Galeon/Jungle Groove, Braid OST and Shadow Of The Colossus OST(This one is the best of any games that i've played, most of them give me chills everytime i listen them) but almost everyone of those have been already posted
I'm a big fan och rpg music, suikoden, square-enix games, and so on, but the music in MGS is so damn good that it blows everything out of proportion, I've beaten all of the game dozens of times and I still get mantears at the epic scenes.

I used to leave my computer on overnight while sitting in Tristram just because I loved the music so much. Also a lot of time spent playing most of the final fantasy games lots of props to those guys.

As for me I like the decisive battle theme from FF6 (or perhaps something composed by Z.R.E.O.)
Tribes 2: The best multiplayer game ever.. Hearing these songs makes me so sad this game isn't played anymore. 1v1 in Tribes 2 is the only way of measuring skills.
It is a tough choice, but Final Fantasy VII has the best soundtrack and this song brings back bittersweet memories of my first Final Fantasy VII playthrough. Long story short, I fucked it up so bad at the end of the game, that beating it was an impossibility. I spent days hopelessly trying to beat it anyways, but I finally had to give up and restart. This song however, never got old.
Any of the Mechwarrior series has awesome music, but these 3 videos have pretty much every one from Mechwarrior 2, the one with, imo, the best music of them all.
I am so surprised that nobody mentioned it so far.....
Plenty of fantastic content in this thread, I'll try and post pieces that I have not yet seen (Lots of variety here, I've been playing games all my life across most platforms):
Mask of the Betrayer First of all, you should all read this Let's Play - if only for the glorious evil ending, but don't cheat yourself out of the buildup. As for music, this game has one of the best RPG intro themes of all time, namely the Theme of the Betrayer. I could basically list all of the music here, but if you have the game, open up its folder in Explorer and check out the 'Music_X1\' directory. It contains a bunch of '.bmu' files, but they are really just renamed MP3 files. Take a copy of them and rename to '.mp3' and they'll play just fine in your media player of choice.
Japanese Visual Novels & Eroge From Tenshi no Inai 12-gatsu ("December When There Is No Angel"): Ikeda Haruna - I Hope So. From "Princess Brave": KOTOKO (I've) - Princess Bride!. Senyaichiya ("1001 Nights") composed by Yuki Kajiura. This is cheating a bit because it's not actually from any of the .hack games but from a special anime that came with one of them.
I had better stop here... I could fill an entire thread with stuff, I think...
EDIT: EFF YOU to those who don't bother to make proper links. I browse TL with Youtube video embedding disabled (pages with multiple videos on them are as pure a browser killer as you can get) so all I see are just links like youtube.com/watch?v=5uZr3JWYdy8 which is nothing short of useless. ADDENDUM to the edit: So I found this really nice Greasemonkey script that changes plain Youtube links into a Youtube icon plus the title of the video it links to.
seodoth, don't use the audio tag to embed stuff from youtube. Not everyone is using Chrome or Safari, you know... (Youtube files are in MPEG-4 which due to software patents (which can suck my sweaty hairy balls) is not - and probably never will be - supported by Firefox).
Everytime I hear music from Kingdom Hearts (the first game particularly) I think of Christmas. I think I got it as a Christmas present when it came out in Sweden. I really love the game and, of course, the music!

It's hard to beat Nobuo Uematsu when it comes to video game music; his music was half of what made Final Fantasies great for me. But everyone's heard his stuff, so...
There's actually one piece of VG music that I like the most but apparently nobody has uploaded it on to youtube. It's the log-in theme from Kingdom of the Winds, a really old Nexon MMO that holds a special place in my heart. Fellow Korean 90's kids, you know what I speak of.
- Start your Engines - FF13 OST - Fighting Fate - FF13 OST - Cavalry Theme - FF13 OST - T Station - Age of Kings (AOE2) OST - Chocolate Outline - Age of Mythology OST
If you enjoy these songs, check out Stephen Rippy he's an amazing writer/musician. He worked on all of the AOE soundtracks and halo wars, and age of mythology.
Final fantasy 13 is the best final fantasy soundtrack of all time. I'd highly recommend getting the entirety of it.
I stream a lot of good VG music while I play. Come check it out
I've learned a lot of secret of mana and seiken densetsu 3 songs on my bass. The songs that have bass in them that is. Could probably learn others too if I had the time. Some aren't hard but there's one SoM song called Steel and Snare that is borderline impossible at some points towards the end.
The HL2 soundtrack is great, very creepy, futuristic sounding ambient.
I couldn't find the song in Gabriel 1 Soundtrack I enjoyed most on youtube, but the main theme is also quite good. By Robert Holmes.
Divine Divinity has a surprisingly strong and even soundtrack, it's difficult to pick since most of them are great. Think Kirill Pokrovsky made the soundtrack.
Along with the Silent Hill 2 soundtrack, this is probably the most haunting and immense game soundtrack ever. Chris Vrenna created something amazing.
I know, I'm bumping an old threat but I felt the need for it. I went through each and every page and there was only 1 mention of the NES Ninja Gaiden, not even a youtube link, just a mention!
Anyways, here goes my favorites from this masterpiece (DAMN BIRDS)
i did a quick F3 search on the whole thread and i'm quite shocked that this song hasn't been posted already, if my search is wrong though i apologise. still alive from portal
i think one guy mentioned the music from banjo kazooie and this is awesome too, the way it keeps recognisable bits but changes based on where in the game you were was great. Also some of the stuff on san andreas was pretty awesome :D

The portal song is here already, probably didn't find it with a search since it was just a youtube link and no text! Great song of course, but its no Ninja Gaiden! ;D jkjk
Tristram village! hells yeah dunno why i forgot that one. theres a great video somewhere of qxc giving some guy in his chat mod for linking him that song when he was telling a story :D
One of the few tracks that really get me revved up to go out, kill stuff, and win! I can easily imagine Shepard barking orders while his team is yelling out status updates with rifle shots pounding their position.
Altho it isn't music that was made with a game in mind, there's a few tracks I'll always associate with a game (and a few games I'll always remember with those songs). Surprised noone mentioned them yet:
- FIFA '98 = Blur - Song 2. - FIFA '99 = Fatboy Slim - Rockafella skank. - Need For Speed Underground = Crystal Method - Born too slow.
While I normally despise EA and everything they stand for, they did an awesome job on these soundtracks and these songs really defined the game for me. Seems to be the same for a lot of people around my age (25), especially for both FIFA's.
Some random one I chose from Vagrant Story. Great soundtrack for this game.
From Xenosaga: Episode I.
Lunar 2 Boss Theme.
Final Fantasy XII has alot of great tracks.
Final Fantasy XIII.
Obviously I would have added some other ones, like from Zelda, Shadow of the Colossus, and Xenogears, but they have already been mentioned quite a bit.
Seems like we're getting lots of Xenogears love in here, which means you guys would probably enjoy some other Mitsuda songs, such as this gem here:
^^ Most unique boss theme ever IMO. Also, if you listen to the background riff, the pattern/note progression sounds quite similar to Schala's theme (Chrono Trigger)
and, also Shevat: The wind is calling (Xenogears)
It's so awesome to see that Mitsuda has his own little recognizable touches to many of his songs. Helps cement himself as a truly unique composer.
Oh, and this is probably the best opening music ever. I saw the Streets of Rage 2 1-1 song, and I immediately knew this had to be posted as well.
I haven't seen Primal Eyes in here yet. One of the most pure badass songs ever in a video game.
Also, I doubt many people have played this yet since it has yet to be translated, but I'm greatly looking forward to Xenoblade, and here's one of the awesome songs in the soundtrack that I stumbled upon. Looking forward to this game so much.
On March 26 2011 12:25 neo_sporin wrote: The mother fuckin Black Mages. After Nobuo Uematsu stopped doing the Final Fantasy music he formed a rock band to play FF songs.
Star Control 2 has a lot of brilliant soundtracks. It's a huge sci-fi game from the early 90's, with a galaxy full of star systems and alien races to explore. Each alien race has a unique song playing in the background when you encounter them, and different screens like ship fitting, hyperspace navigating etc. have different soundtracks also.
An example of one of the alien race theme songs.
Some gameplay footage with music, the original game only had text dialogue, but this version with speech is from a later re-make called 'Ur-Quan Masters'.
I can't believe this isn't on here yet this game was amazing and these songs just added to it... The best RPG I've ever played. So much better than Final Fantasy 7 in my book.
And pretty much any music from Diablo 2, but especially:
Also wanted to share kind of a funny story. I had WoW music muted and was playing Pandora in the background. Pandora had been stopped for a while, but I didn't notice, and then I suddenly realized that I was not just humming the WoW music, I was actually humming music appropriate for the zone I was in.
Oh so awesome. Usually how I start out my gaming sessions. Many a drunken night I have gotten a taxi and ended up talking about how awesome this song is.
I can see what you see not Vision milky then eyes rot When you turn they will be gone Whispering their hidden song Then you see what cannot be Shadows move where light should be Out of darkness, out of mind Cast down into the Halls of the Blind.
I'M sure we have some Guild Wars fans, but for those who played the 1st campaign, they Remember the theme for it too, Which happens to be my favorite game theme.
I remember when I was in 6th grade and I got it, and I had to work so hard to earn it from my dad, and when I was supposed to get it, he pretended they were sold out, and on the car home, he pulled the game out. After flipping out, I loaded the game up and heard the most epic music of all time, it was the first song I ever "Felt" and I'll never forget it that feeling.
Probably more than I should have included, but I guess it adds to why it's so amazing to me, but should be as good to everybody else!
Lots of great music in this thread but no Ace Combat?!?! It's so hard to just pick one favourite so I'm going to pick things hopefully people haven't heard yet
I guess my favorite song of a video game is the theme of Monkey Island. Sorry, but i can't include a video right now, because sites like youtube are disabled by my employer. :/
This was in the ending credits of Def Jam: Fight For N.Y. I went out and bought his album after I heard this song and I've been listening to him ever since.
I just browsed through the entire thread, so much nostalgia. Awesome. My favourite ones would probably be any zelda song, the first doom, quake and monkey island.
Haha, just read through the whole thread and listened to a lot of songs! Wow, I am so full of nostalgia right now. To think what gems all these non geek kids missed out on when they were out seeing girls and doing sports...um. Anyway, like most people I can't select one song in particular I hold as my favourite, although I find it fun to try. Most likely the song would be from Zelda, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Fallout or Starcraft.
I think the best video game song ever is Final Fantasy VII - Battle Theme. The boss theme might be slightly more well-known (even though they're both very common to be mentioned in circumstances like these), but I think the battle theme is better. It has an industry feel to it, going well along with the game's steampunkish environment and atmosphere. The metallic clanks and robotics sound makes you able to literally see before you all that machinery trying to kill you.
I think no other theme has meant as much to me as this particular one, and it still manages to send chills down my spine whenever I hear it. Other songs I really love are Mega Man - Dr Wily stage 1 and Fallout - Metallic Monks.
My favorite video games for music were definitely the SSX games. I'm a bit younger than a lot of people here, so I never got that old classic SNES stuff. The SSX games had great music - really, a bunch of stuff that I'd actually still consider cool today, at least 6 years later. Awesome tracks in those games, and a bunch if indie songs that are pretty unique. Still love those songs... and bought a ton of them.
Arcanum of Steamworks and magic obscura had an incredible sound track, the somber strings really set the tone for a game about the failure of magic to compete with rising technology.
Might and magic 6: The Mandate of Heaven, also had amazing music pretty much anything where they had paid musicians impresses me.
Doesn't feel like VG music, but I'm pretty sure it was made for Portal 2, and that's where I heard it first. Knocked me of my chair when I first heard it playing through a radio in a ratman's den, completely changed the feel of the game. Best musical moment in a game in years.
Every time I hear this I nostalgia so hard...If you played runescape, you will know the feeling:
Absolutely love this song and it brings me back to grade 5, having the day off school and spending that day leveling my blacksmithing so I could make full bronze...Aaahhh, good times.
Somewhat related, but someone got a full orchestra together and played a TON of songs from the Zelda series. Its all also freely available for download from their site, and its all amazing. I highly recommend the Gerudo Valley theme in the Ocarina of Time album.

came here to post this exact thing. i love the national - they live like 15 minutes from me - and it is just so fucking cool that they are in portal 2. it makes my fucking year, man.
Was gonna post this into the "best ingame video game music soundtracks" thread but it was closed, so I'll share here . Mute City is one of my favorite songs, though I have a lot of favorities xD
Yep, Final Fantasy (series), or particularly FF7 ( I don't know all the soundtracks ofc ) since many people happen to have nostalgic memories with this milestone, which strengthens their affinity towards the music.
Also, Touhou series
Also, Super Smash Bros Brawl actually has very good arrangements. Considering that these arrangements sound good, it's quite impressive considering that not all of the songs selected to be in the game were originally good. Even within the series itself, it has improved songs.
And another thing about SSBB: Within the game, there are about 30 different versions of the Main Theme or Tracks focusing on a particular part of the Main Theme, each with a unique feel. Quite amazing. And it's no surprise to me how well SSBB's soundtrack turned out considering they had so many of the top musicians from the video game industry work on it, including Final Fantasy's Nobuo Uematsu.
Secret of Mana. One of my favorite games of all time, and definitely my favorite video game OST of all time. (Many) personal highlights from the soundtrack:
Omg I thought I was the only one in the world who loved this game, the music is so good and so is the game. Reminds me of better times and better people!
So good. The game as well as the entire soundtrack by Ben Houge. IT can be had for free from Terra-Arcanum.com.
Dungeon theme from Phantasy Star III. The game itself was inferior to other offerings in the series (like IV. OMFG) but it had some of the best music for the genesis as a system.
End boss music from Donkey Kong Country 1. Holy shit. I love how it starts out as a homoerotic sea shanty and moves into some kind of driven rock beat ala 80s hair metal.
Castlevania III intro tune.
Lost Vikings 2: Doomsday 2 music. The original Lost Vikings was actually made by Silicon and Synapse, which was Blizzard's name before they were Blizzard. PS1 version of this game had a great soundtrack in general but I loved the electro/industrial music of the doomsday levels.
The Homeworld series by Sierra Entertainment, is in my experience, one of the best examples of a game getting it's audio to match it's gameplay. The music successfully and seamlessly merges two contrasting audio themes. The slow, chilling sound associated with the sheer vastness of space, coupled with the high intensity of ship to ship dogfights. The final product is a game that sucks you in with all your senses and imagination, not just with fancy graphics. Which is something a lot of games these days tend to think is important. The truly epic voice acting is just the icing on the cake.
I can still remember loading the original game up for the first time, Adagio For Strings began to play as the opening theme, and I got shivers down my spine. Paul Ruskay really did an outstanding job.
Nobuo Uemetsu, I gotta say, has an amazing skill for being able to create beautiful atmospheres out of the music alone. The soundtrack to FFX itself, paints a picture greater than any of the wonderful cinematics present in the game.
Since Frozen Synapse came out,I thought I'd throw their soundtracks into the thread as well. The game seems to be awesome as well.I downloaded the soundtracks and love them all.For example :
I'm a big fan of the guy who did the vagrant story music. So many good songs in that game... also my sister was playing odin sphere once and I heard the music and... honestly I could tell right away it was the same composer!
Would I be deemed the worst person in the world if I said I liked To Zanarkand (FFX) more than any Ocarina of Time song, despite OoT being my favorite game of all time? I also really like the soundtrack to oot as well, but damn, Nobo Uematsu is just a genius.
Oh, and Amusement park stage from Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 has to be up there too.
Also a huge huge fan ofas well as basically every other song in FF9)
I can actually play this on the piano, too! Haha my proudest musical accomplishment considering the only other things I can play are Hava Nagila, the typical Heart and soul stuff, and the Beverly Hills Cop theme song.
Edit: Can also play Ruff Ryders Anthem by DMX lol.
i would probly have to go with the super mario world ending song as one of my fav songs in all videogames !!! also full game soundtrack is probly sc bw because that music was out of this world !!!! either that or earthbound music !!!!

I just had to reply to this post, although it's nearly a year since it was posted, cause I know how you feel so well. I was also quite young when I was introduced to Guild Wars through my brother. I remember watching him play and I was stunned by how amazingly beautiful and interesting this game was. I remember listening to the main theme and the factions theme for the first time and basically fell in love with the music. Since that day Jeremy Soule has been my favorite video game music composer. I also love the work he has done with Skyrim, the music alone is enough reason to play that game :D
Apart from Jeremy Soule I also really enjoy most of the music from Blizzard's games
storm eagle from megamanx (my speedcore mix of this song is one of the few musical endeavors im proud of), aeris' theme from ff7 (nobuo uematsu in general <3), wily stage 1, airman, and bubbleman from megaman2 ...
... and pretty much anything done by TaQ and LED in IIDX if that counts
edit: and if rhythm games count, then im obligated to give a shout out to DANCER from IIDX
I would have to agree with To Zanarkand, though I also like Sad Romance as well from FFX.
Some of the Halo track, Shadow of the Colossus, and KH as well. So much. There's a lot of older 8 bit songs that I think would be absolutely gorgeous if recorded with a full orchestra, like Chrono Trigger.
Was thinking about maybe putting the Link to the Past theme here, but that seems too cliche'd. The Fallout series is the only series which has its soundtrack in my iPod... so I guess I'll have to go with this.
Been playing doom lately, last two are likely not recognized by most people. The bottom two are from PWAD's and just a few music pieces I enjoyed playing through them.
Likely completely unknown because Alien Vendetta and HR2 are definitely not enjoyable for casual gamers due to the difficulty.
hmmm forgot this one, just a really good fit for a doom level. Probably my favorite music piece from Hell Revealed 2 due to how well it works with map 15.
Watch it with the music video. It gives me nerd chills and gets me thinking about how much humanity has done... I realize a lot of the stuff depicted in the MV is kiiinda shitty, but still. I'm not a very patriotic person either, but the part when they raise the American flag and then with Lincoln... damn.
A lot of the MoH songs are pretty amazing, this might be my favorite, sorry if its been posted already. Also this game was one of my favorite releases during its time, too bad broken multiplayer kept it from getting big.
I think video game music in general sucks but it's the nostalgia factor that makes us like them. I like the music from RA2 and SCBW but that's because I enjoyed playing the games too. In a vaccum if I had just heard the songs I wouldn't like them.

holy shit this site is amazing. chrono trigger robo song + rick astley is so right on so many levels LOL
I listen to this when I need to focus on studying or school and there is noise around me. It is by far my favorite game, and the music is amazing. Having nearly 5 hours of the soundtrack whenever I want it is pretty great, and the music itself is fantastic. If you have ever played the game, you'll kind of reminisce throughout listening, as each song sparks a memory for me.
I don't have any definite favorites, but I have "phases" where I keep listening to same song over and over until I grow sick of and/or find another song. I'm currently addicted to this song:
Never Forget from Halo 3. Such a great piece. But really, any Halo song, Skyrim song, or final fantasy song could compete for the list. Also Star Wars, but that's sort of more of a movie than a game exclusively.

I still have the original game CD. Did you know you can put it in a CD player and it will read it just like an audio CD? I rock out to it in my car sometimes, because I'm awesome like that.
With a lot of competitors, but I'm still very certain of it: The Starcraft 2 Terran Theme by Russel Brower. It's possible to listen to this ALL day long and it's probably the best music to drive on a highway/ driving in general. If you're looking for more epic music, I would prefer Skyrims "Dragonborn" or Halo 3s "Never Forget". Unbelievable good!
