I would like something like this, basically an entry level headphone that is around 100-150$. How does this compare to the more popular Sennheiser HD 555s? Are there any other recommendations you would have at this price range. From reviews i figured out that the ATH-A700s are a good bang for buck entry level, however thats all I know of right now. Secondly, I was wondering if I would need to buy a sound card for my computer to do this justice? Oh and how are the zalman microphones? Im going to need something like that to be able to simulate a gaming headset lol. Thanks alot! I've never heard the ATH-A700 (closed-back, somewhat isolating), but the ATH-AD700 (open-back, non-isolating, somewhat cheaper) is much more popular for some reason. I'm guessing you don't need closed headphones because you're considering the Senn HD 555, or maybe you don't realize that they're open and don't block out any sound coming in or out? Other popular headphones to look for in that price range include the Sennheiser HD 595--down in price because the 515/555/595 are being replaced by the 518/558/598--AKG K240S, and Audio-Technica ATH-M50. Can anyone vouch for the new Sony ZX700? You can read a few pages back about amps, DACs, sound cards (which include a DAC and amp), etc. You'll get a big improvement with these kinds of headphones even out of ordinary sources, so if you're just getting started, it's maybe something you can look into later. (red is mono mic in, blue is stereo line in, black is stereo out rear channels, gray is stereo out side channels, and gold is center/subwoofer out).

ZX700 are now at the price the M50 used to be and I think they might be a better buy. I hate to recommend something I haven't tried though. From what I heard they have the same popular type of warm sound signature that won't offend anyone. But yeah, if you're looking for M50's, keep an eye out for ZX700's also. (EDIT: Convinced my friend to bite the bullet on the ZX700. If he lets me borrow them I'll let you guys know what I think.)

All of these will sound about infinitely better than what you can get for 100 dollars worth from "gaming" gear, but at the cost of having no mic. Personally having used both "gaming" headsets and audio-grade headphones I find no reason not to simply buy a cheap separate desktop mic to go along with my headphones. Of course there are far more options available at this very competitive price point and the models I mentioned span different kinds of sound preferences, so if you can list out some of your needs and preferences in music I'm sure people can come up with more suggestions for you.

That's not to say it's the best ever, but driving something like an SRH840, I don't think there should be any glaring problems that would be fixed by switching to a different source. Do you notice any differences between the onboard audio and iPod? Anyway, apparently this guy is about to publish a Fiio E7 review, so stay tuned: http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/ I'd say I notice a diffence between onboard and ipod, yeah, but maybe that's cause when i'm on my pc im playing sc2 and when im on my ipod im on the bus...I'll try now though =P

However the comfort is really lacking. I have to take them off and put on my RE0's sometimes because of the pain.

Now I just have some crappy earbuds and really wish I could go back in time to prevent the cord from ripping in half. Can anyone recommend some good (sound quality and comfort are the top priorities) mid-price headphones (even though I am broke atm)? Thanks. I skimmed the thread and only saw really expensive ones, and after all I am just a poor student.
