My First Car?

I'm getting my license very soon and have been stockpiling wealth, so I'm getting to that time where I'm supposed to be looking for my first car.

Since I have no real interest in motor vehicles, I thought I might turn to the loving advice of all of you automotive fanatics here at TL!

I expect the car to be 1 - 3 years old (I'm buying used), have very good gas mileage, below 80,000 miles, and cost somewhere around $7,000 - $11,000. I'd also like it to have decent acceleration and enough power to go uphill without getting 3+ poor bastards stuck trailing me. I don't care what it looks like (that is a lie).

Anybody with suggestions feel free to post here... car model, year, source, advice on selecting a used vehicle, etc all greatly appreciated.

There's so many options with the things you want in a car. It seems you could be happy with a lot of different types of cars. Hmm... I don't know price ranges for cars very well so I'll let other people do the real talking. :O

You're right, I could use a computer. Using this slate and chizel to send messages to TL.net is making my arm tired.

'Freedom'... I like the sound of that. I have one question though... does it have enough storage space to fit my golf clubs?

It just has enough room for beers for the golf round. You will need to hire a caddy for your golf bag.

Camry's are really nice cars. They have kickass A/C units in them, too. Finding one for that cheap only being a couple years old might be kind of hard, considering that brand new they are like $30,000, and they don't lose value super fast unless they have a ton of miles on them, which you don't want.
I'm never gonna know you now \ But I'm gonna love you anyhow.

Friend of mine just bought a new Camry, it was more like $21-22k. They are very nice cars. The Accord and Camry are very similar in terms of size and price, as are the Civic and Corolla. All four are solid choices. The problem with used Hondas and Toyotas is that their re-sale value drops very slowly with time (because they are so reliable, therefore higher demand in the used market).

Always check edmunds.com for the value of any car (new or used) before you think about buying it. That site has a lot of good information (I used it extensively before buying my first new car last year).

It really depands on the car you want to buy, wether you want a sports version, 2 doors, or more of a luxurious car with 4 doors... With all the needs (1 - 3 years old, have very good gas mileage, below 80,000 miles, and to have a good acceleration) it will cost more than 11k.

I must say that a Toyota is a good car, but then again, toyota camry is expensive and I'm not sure you'll find a good camry with all the needs you need for that price (7k-11k), it will cost much more. Toyota tercel, is the cheapest of all toyotas (3k-6k), but the quality comes with the price, though I must admit they do last beyond 250 000km.
And last but not least, Toyota corolla. A corolla isn't to expensive, and it lasts even more than the tercel, but the acceleration is purely inexistant. I actually drove a friend's corolla on a highway (was going back to his house) and I felt the car couldn't take it anymore, though I must admit the clutch wasn't at its best (he had some problems with it), but iether way as I passed the 4th gear the car wouldn't go any faster, (you can litteraly forget about the 5th gear cause it's useless in that car).

I would recommend a Honda instead. Most likely a Civic 2001~2002. It has low milage, it has a decent acceleration (that is ofcourse if you drive a manual car but the 4V sucks though ).

A honda accord is better than the civic in almost everyway, but it costs 15k-25k with all your needs.

Another good car that you might consider taking is a golf. You won't be able to afford a GTI though, but iether way a golf is a solid car, it has eveything you ask for, and it has a good acceleration (don't take 1.8L like the jettas, 2.2+ only, though I don't think it's easy to find a golf with 6V, but nonetheless they do exist, and they are far better and stronger cars than 4V. And the Price varies from 8k-13k, so it appeals to your budget.

I can't really think of any good cars right now, but if you need more info or maybe some pictures, or anything you can pm me I'll be more than glad to help (I love cars^^).
My RSX owns yours.
