the flesh of the blobfish is primarily a gelatinous mass with a density slightly less than water; this allows the fish to float above the sea floor without expending energy on swimming. Its relative lack of muscle is not a disadvantage as it primarily swallows edible matter that floats by in front of it.

It's very tempting to make a crack about WoW players here.

Hm.. I think I just did.

That's because humans bred them like that, they didn't breed in the wild. They are kind of like mules, unable to have offspring :\

It's not a cross between a killer whale and a dolphin, it's a cross between a false killer whale (another species of dolphin) and a bottlenose dolphin. A real killer whale would . . . . a dolphin if they ever tried to get it on.

Most of the stuff about them online is a hoax (but there is PLENTY of it there as you probably found), I just posted it for fun as they're a staple bizarre creature. They're not really venomous and can't really run that fast. They do chase light sources at night (such as lamps and flashlights) though, which is probably how the rumors got started.

Pistol Shrimp, or Snapping Shrimp+ Show Spoiler +
The snapping shrimp grows to only 1–2 inches (3–5 cm) long. It is distinctive for its remarkably disproportionate large claw, larger by half than the entire body. The claw can be on either arm of the body, and unlike most shrimp claws does not have pincers at the end. Rather, it has a pistol-like feature made of two parts. A joint allows the "hammer" part to move backward into a right-angled position. When released, it snaps into the other part of the claw, emitting an enormously powerful wave of bubbles capable of stunning larger fish and breaking small glass jars

The snapping shrimp competes with much larger animals like the Sperm Whale and Beluga Whale for the title of 'loudest animal in the sea'. The animal snaps a specialized claw shut to create a cavitation bubble that generates acoustic pressures of up to 80 kPa at a distance of 4 cm from the claw. As it extends out from the claw, the bubble reaches speeds of 60 miles per hour (97 km/h) and releases a sound reaching 218 decibels. The pressure is strong enough to kill small fish. It corresponds to a zero to peak pressure level of 218 decibels relative to one micropascal (dB re 1 μPa), equivalent to a zero to peak source level of 190 dB re 1 μPa at the standard reference distance of 1 m. Au and Banks measured peak to peak source levels between 185 and 190 dB re 1 μPa at 1 m, depending on the size of the claw. Similar values are reported by Ferguson and Cleary. The duration of the click is less than 1 millisecond.

The snap can also produce sonoluminescence from the collapsing cavitation bubble. As it collapses, the cavitation bubble reaches temperatures of over 5,000 K (4,700 °C).[12] In comparison, the surface temperature of the sun is estimated to be around 5,800 K (5,500 °C). The light is of lower intensity than the light produced by typical sonoluminescence and is not visible to the naked eye. It is most likely a by-product of the shock wave with no biological significance. However, it was the first known instance of an animal producing light by this effect. It has subsequently been discovered that another group of crustaceans, the mantis shrimp, contains species whose club-like forelimbs can strike so quickly and with such force as to induce sonoluminescent cavitation bubbles upon impact.
So basically it's a shrimp that can shoot fireballs..

I'm pretty sure it just does that to make itself easier to hide... owls have big luminous eyes so it closes them partially to prevent them from shining in the dark. If it were hiding in a tree you wouldn't be able to see it at all. It rotates to keep it's eye on the potential predator so it can flee if it has too.

vs the smaller owl, it wants to appear bigger. vs the bigger owl, it has no chance of being bigger, so it wants to hide i think

How do you confuse hiding with the stare of death.

My guess is that when the emeny is too large, the owl makes itself look sick and unhealthy, ie not suitable as food

It's not a cross between a killer whale and a dolphin, it's a cross between a false killer whale (another species of dolphin) and a bottlenose dolphin. A real killer whale would . . . . a dolphin if they ever tried to get it on.

I'm going to agree with making the owl easier to hide. Also, it rotates to appear "still" to the enemy owl, since its essentially the same image the whole time regardless of the enemy owl's position. Tries to be as inconspicuous as possible.

Mantis shrimp

Wow man! What an awesome shrimp! Wish I could have some of those in aquarium at home. :D

They are actually even cooler than that. They kill their prey by striking it with the heel of their claws with over 200 pounds of force (from a 12 inch animal).

Its the fastest strike of any animal and the one with the most force per body size. They can break the glass of aquariums.

They also have the most advanced eyes of any animal, while humans can see 3 colors, Mantis Shrimp can distinguish 12 and see far into the infrared and ultraviolet range. Their compound eyes have 3 "pupils" or centers which gives them trinocular vision from each eye. They can therefore figure out the depth and distance of an object with only one eye, and they have almost 360 degree visual fields. They are also the only known animal to be able to distinguish circularly polarized light.

They can also live for up to 20 years and are considered in the same intelligence class as octopi.
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.
