Father on trial for branding children like cattle
A US man accused of branding his three children like cattle is on trial on assault charges in Washington state.
KIRO-TV reports that Mark Seamands branded his 13- and 15-year-old sons and 18-year-old daughter with the letters "SK" - for Seamands's Kids.
He has been charged with assaulting his sons but not his daughter because she was old enough to give consent.
Mr Seamands's former wife said she was horrified when she saw the scars on the younger boy's chest, the older boy's arm and the back of the daughter's leg.
KIRO said the boys were expected to testify in defence of their father because they were proud of their brands.
Mr Seamands is expected to take the stand and show his own brand.

What's the point of having kids if you can't mark them as your property?

This sounds bad but the first thing I thought of when I saw SK was SKTT1 Telecom

Put that fucking picture in spoiler tags. Thats disturbing as hell

.. Seriously, couldn't he have just given them tatoos?
|
He forgot the "T" at the end.

Yeah, looks like they rubbed cherry chapstik on his arm and then made letters out of bacon bits. So gross.

what up with the choices on placement.

The kids think this was ok. Talk about brainwashing...

Too many health concerns with that. i.e. Hepatitis/HIV. Think dude, think.

father is a SKT fan but thats fucking horrible of him
|
Yesterday it was all "Ohhhhhhh a teacher beat up a kid" Now its all "Ohhhhhhhh a father branded his children"
I mean, seriously.. there are practical reasons here... Like, what if one of the kids got lost?
|
He forgot the "T" at the end.
In all seriousness though, the kids are proud of the brand?
|
This is just wrong. Kids should be able to decide for themselves which team they support.
|
|
This is like the Cash song Boy Named Sue. Sure, at first glance, it looks like a really sick, twisted thing to do to kids. But think for a moment—Who the fuck is gonna mess with a 13 year old that was badass enough to sit through a branding??
|
yea that brand / scab looks kinda gross... would not look again
this is pretty sick imo... the kids will regret getting this tatoo for sure.
Youngest child: (is having sex for his first time) girlfriend: "what the fuck is that thing on your chest?" kid: "uhh... it stands for... supreme kawk?"
could only lead to akwardness...
15-year old son: (working out in the gym) maybe he could bullshit something about a super coincidental scar, but most likely will get shitted too.
18-year old daughter: its sure as hell gonna be unsightly to wear any kind of pants other than jeans and the like cause there are huge ass scabs on your legs
unless those scabs in the picture are only temporary... in which case it might not be so bad :0

They could probably have some sort of plastic surgery to repair the skin, but this is still just so sickening. :\
|
I'd want to distance myself from that last name as much as possible; not make my children have it on their body too.
|
the father took that SK terran build order a little too literally
|
I would've branded my kids with an OZ, especially with sk slumping.

After the thread where a guy had a knife through his head and the japanese kannibal who had eaten a student and now lives free... this doesn't even seem like news. It's still really odd.

The Scabs obviously do go away. I know this because 3 of my friends decided to get brands during frosh week. One got a J, for the initial of his name, one got the uppercase greek letter sigma (like the one that represents sum in math), and i forget what the other got (I never saw it).
In case you were wondering, they were all super wasted when it was done. But only so it didn't hurt as much, they all had the idea before.

It's a shame that the article doesn't describe much of the psychology behind it all.
I personally would find it incredibly interresting to find out the reasoning that the kids have behind being proud of being branded. And what made the father think branding them was a good idea.
|
I'm sure the same people in this thread who are against this would at the same time fiercely protect the right of any person to mark their child for life by having them circumcised. I also find this thread ironic considering the amount of tattoos, scarifications and other types of bodymodifications every other teenager have got on their bodies today.

Then again, aren't those pretty much all in the hands of the person themselves? And I believe that here in the states, you must be 18 to get a tattoo of any sort. I don't have any myself, so I don't know for sure (or even if it's a state-to-state thing).
I know that my mom was good friends with her tattoo artist, and she got me free piercings whenever I went with her. Completely off topic, but whateva :p
|
i want to feel bad for the kids, but this feeling is a little mitigated by the fact that they were proud of the brands... What did that father do to his kids to make them think that it was okay?
|
The kids are probably down with it because only badasses can handle being branded. Well, at least the boys.
|
Its better than the swastikas that people were branding each other with.
|
I'm sure SKT was the first thing most people on here thought when seeing the picture . But the pic's still gross.
|
If all the kids allowed it, powers to them!. I would've loved one as a kid, for sure I'd have gotten even more pussy!
Brand > Ink for sure.
|
Its not that big... Not that different from tattoos piercings etc body modification. Hurts for a moment but thats it. Sure I'd like to hear their reasons for taking it though. People take fucking stupid tattoos all the time and theres no fuss of it...
Circumcision is much more groce though, and practically always done with the childs who can't consent yet

So you're saying branding your children is an ok thing to do?
|
hmmm i don't know what to think of this...in my book, it's horribly wrong...but for some people it might be ok...isn't it ok to get tattoo with consent from parents? so what's the difference between getting tattoo and getting branded with consent of parent?
|
Brands are badass. rock on crazy father. The kids obviously wanted it, and the story said the dad has his own. Must be a family tradition

Lol get branded, it hurts for a long ass time while it heals. Tattoos are pretty pain free in comparison in both intensitity and duration.

man, the father must have strong ambitions for his son to join SKT1

A kid from one of my lab courses had his fraternity symbol branded on his arm. Kinda of like a tattoo I guess, but I disagree with this seeing the fact that they are children.
|
If they agreed to it then I guess it's okay.
There is a lot more to this story that could be revealed, but that shit should be done by professional investigators. You know, if he is abusive, if they actually consented or if it was something forced, things of that nature.
Honestly, if they really are okay with it, I cannot fault anyone. If it was their choice, I don't believe anyone should say otherwise. It doesn't sound like the best idea to me, but that's just my opinion, of course.
But still...ouch...

I really don't want to post more because it should be BLATANTLY obvious that she did, since they're expected to speak in his defense.

Wow some of yall didn't actually read. The kids agreed to get them. So why run...? Maybe to cool off their new sweet stamp?
|
I doubt the kid actually agreed. I think the persecutor may find it hard to prove that she did not agree, however.
|
It seems really stupid to use 'SK' instead of his initials, 'MS'. If you're going to brand your children then the "Kids" part is implied. I'm pretty sure when cattle are branded a 'C' isn't added at the end to signify "Cows".
|

I also think the placement could be improved. A stamp on the back of their hands or the forehead is much more likely to be noticed and unlikely to be mistaken for something frivolous and artful.

Because they're children. Children below a certain age aren't able to give consent. It's for the same reason that if you manage to convince a child to have sex with you, it still doesn't count as consent.

It has nothing to do with whether or not they were children. They added in cattle to make it sound like he was treating his children like animals, causing people to judge the situation before they even know the facts.
|
dont some african cultures do body manipulation to there children much worse then this.. like flaying the flesh all over the body with a knife as a passage to manhood.. women that have there necks extended to extreme lengths and full body tattoos.
this is kinda tame in comparison
people are over reacting.
edit The sc jokes are nerdy and not funny
|
It's weird, but there have been a lot more worse things that have happened. In that respect it's not really a big deal. If the kids weren't fine with it, then it'd be a different story.
|
love how the media makes it sound like the most terrible thing to happen
sure its kinda weird but if the kids wanted it and were okay with it then why not?

Yeah, it's illegal. But the law shouldn't be used as the ultimate judicator for what counts as right and wrong. It's reasonable to consider the law as being mostly right about things, but it just can't possibly always be right about all things, and we should be mindful of that. Also I think we can agree that there's a clear moral difference between having sex with a young child, and branding one.
