I don't know what I want to do for a living, but I know for sure that one of my goals in life is to have as complete an understanding of physics as I can get. Ultimately, I hope to understand the search for the theory of everything, and understand all the math behind it if it is found within my lifetime. To get the PhD is the tangible goal, but I don't know what kind of job/lifestyle that would come with after graduation. I'm very conscious about getting into a career I will like, so until I know what that would make me happy, I need to keep flexibility in my education and avoid the engineering/finance/applied math/medicine routes.

Be in a successful, good, fun band that has a smaller amount of D-Bags following it. Preferably as a guitar player. And travel.

A philosopher or philosophe

An academic philosopher, or a philosopher? And what is a philosopher anyway? Moreover, what is philosophy? How can one be a philosopher if one doesn't even know what a philosopher is? Also: unless you graduate from Oxford or Harvard or any of the top 10 schools, your chances of getting a tenure track position are slim to nil, since there is an excess of Ph.Ds and a decreasing number of tenure track jobs; and this trend will continue as long as the humanities continue to be phased out of the universities. I know this because I've thought about becoming an academic philosopher.
For more info, see here: http://chronicle.com/article/Graduate-School-in-the-Huma/44846/
and also here (for a counterargument of sorts): http://chronicle.com/article/Neither-a-Trap-Nor-a-Lie/64535/
If I can't get into a top 10 school then my dream of becoming a philosophy professor dies, and I'll probably just end up working 9-5 at some job that I (hopefully) moderately enjoy. Sadly, as I get older, reality has its way of showing me that my dreams are pipe dreams. I'm not rich, so I need to earn money to survive. Alas, if only I had been born rich. Then I could've had the luxury of living a life of contemplation.

I'm going to do everything that I want to do in life. I have done so thus far and will continue to do so. My goal in school is to become a physicist, though that isn't my only focus. I'm here to enjoy the life I have.
|
I want to get my PhD in physics and then become one of the worlds top researchers while looking at the stars in my spare time.
