I was looking through some topics, and it's ridiculous how sloppy internet typing, or spelling rather, has become. I don't know why "u r" or "ur" has become an acceptable substitute for "you are". It's one thing to make a spelling mistake, or a typo here and there; No one's perfect. But lazy "abbreviations" like "sum", "wut", "nuttin", "2", "ppl", are completely worthless. It's only a few extra seconds, and it adds, if nothing else, atleast a small shred of credibility to usually infantile posts usually negated by the moronic spellings. Is anyone else as annoyed by this as I am?

FakeSteve's Spelling And Grammar Lesson

They're, Their, There: A Lesson In Grade 2 English
-------

"They're" is a contraction, combining two words, "They" and "Are".
Proper: They're going to the store.
IMPROPER: They're car is a rusty pile of shit.

"Their" is possessive. It refers to a group of people owning something.
Proper: Their car is a rusty pile of shit.
IMPROPER: Their going to the store.

"There" refers to location.
Proper: The rusty pile of shit is over there.
IMPROPER: There going to the store.

-------

You're and Your: A Lesson In Not Being Fucking Retarded.
-------

"You're" is another contraction, combining the words "You" and "are". It's accusative.
Proper: You're an idiot.
IMPROPER: Your an idiot.

"Your" is possessive, it refers to ownership by an individual.
Proper: Your car is a rusty pile of shit.
IMPROPER: Your an idiot.

--------

And it's spelled "DEFINITELY", not "DEFINATELY"

Hope this helps everyone who doesn't understand elementary-level english!

I used to be annoyed with people who type like that, but after spending as much time in forums and stuff as I have, you really don't notice it as much. But, it's really not a problem, because 99% of the time the only people who's comments are worth paying attention to are the ones who type correctly anyway.
We cant give up just because things arent the way we want them to be.

People who type like that excessively are annoying. It's particularly angering if you know that the person is intelligent enough to know better.

Speaking of lessons! This one is my favorite

It's is not, it isn't ain't, and it's it's, not its, if you mean it is.
If you don't, it's its. Then too, it's hers. It isn't her's. It isn't
our's either. It's ours, and likewise yours and theirs. -- Oxford

Do you flip out when people say can't? Because thats an abbreviation on the same level. Nothing is wrong with saying can not. I don't have a problem with internet abbreviating. It is when people try to make ebonics a full language that i get annoyed.

You're lesson should be you're quote. It will look good their. Anyhow seriously, those common mistakes are so annoying to read its like looking at someone with alot of hair infront of their forehead and you just feel so uncomfortable looking at it that you just want to move it.

That is anything but the right answer. Just because a language based creation like a 'contraction' exists. Does not explain why you are intolerant to another 'form' of abbreviating. The truth is sir, you have a pet peeve that is hypocritcal in the english language.

Let me make this simple for you:

There are solid rules to the English language, as well as bendable ones. One of the solid rules is that "U R" is NOT proper english. It's used out of laziness, because the letters "U" and "R" sound like "You" and "Are". This is SLANG. Slang is NOT proper english.

Please get your info straight before argueing

So, RIF, following your logic, I could turn spoken words into various grunts and slurs, and claim they should be accepted because it's just another "form" of speaking that I'd like to use?

i find stupid ass abbreviations stupid as hell. It makes them sound like a 10 year old, and I ESPECIALLY hate it when they think they sound cooler because of that.

I try to let girls a bit more slack on this though.

btw: can't is an english contraction following the rules of contractions

"U R" is neither an abbreviation (you starts with a Y and are with A) nor a contraction without the apostrophe and being two separate characters as well. I am intolerent to this stupid form of abbreviating because it is not part of the english language. If you want to speak a bit of "english", speak it. If you want to speak "stupid", go kill yourself.
anguish: its like that time i asked my bestfriend who happened to be black if his dick was bigger than mine anguish: he got angry anguish: and told me i was racist and gay

Do you honestly think im blind to that fact FakeSteve)307. Maybe you misunderstood. Everyone that speaks a fair bit of English has used a contraction. What im saying is, almost everytime a contraction is used, it is out of a learned form of laziness. Making it... dare i say it, exactly the same as me using "u r". I never said "u r" was proper english, not to mention BroOd is allowed to have any pet peeve he wants so i wont go there. But its hypocritcal in this instance. So i pointed it out.

The thing being discussed was that things such as "U R" are just other forms of contractions. They are not.

How on earth is it hypocritical? People should just be able to bend the rules of english every time they feel lazy, until it's just a bunch of incomprehensible smatterings of letters and numbers? It's obvious you're not grasping the basic principles here, so don't worry about it.

i agree... does that help you. U R isnt proper english. This topic was about lazy writing, not superior english usage. So far though, one thing was proven to me, you guys are overly angered by internet slangs. Which by the way, is common language... and no where nearly as awful as you make it out to be. Further more, i bet everyone that has spoken out about hating online slangs has used LOL. If you say you havent ill be forced to believe you a liar.

DV8 <- an example of these online abbreviations (a person also supporting the subject as mistyping as annoying)

SoMuchBetter - he just used "btw" yet another form of online abbreviation.

You maiing an argument against yourselves... you all use these online abbreviations. And you getting pissed off at me for comparing a contraction (which in my opinion is mainly used out of a LEARNED for of laziness), with a online abbreviation which i clearly stated i know is improper. I seriously think you guys need to flame elsewhere.

I agree brood, im actually not as far off from your belief, but i am a tolerant person so to respond to your original post i said it doesnt bug me.

As for you FakeSteve you are looking for a reason to stay pissed at me, when i proved my point on the online abbreviations a couple posts ago. You use online abbreviations everyday i am sure. The real moron is the one not willing to admit it, and telling me to go away when i am right. Don't bother posting again FakeSteve unless you are ready to admit to the very thing you said was annoying.

READ THIS: I AGREE WITH YOU GUYS. har har, it is improper english to use things like "u r", infact if you havent noticed i use them very sparingly as it is. Probably less than the people who say it's annoying.

I'm not even remotely angry. I just have low tolerance for idiots.

You say you agree with us, that's all well and good. You could have just said that, instead of looking for errors in our posts to argue about. Nitpicking serves no purpose other than to instigate arguements.

hmm ok so you're both stubborn aswell. Tell me FakeSteve and BroOd, have you used the online abbreviation lol in the last few days, and further more, did you find yourself annoying while doing it? Im really curious to see what your responses are. Cause from my point of view, you both have no argument except to try to drive in a fact i already know.

Well i'll be FakeSteve never uses LOL in a coversation. Strike FakeSteve from the hypocrites list, which i was so certain he was on. The truth is guys, you both use the same online speech as everyone else. The frequency of the use i would have no idea. FakeSteve.. you attempts to insult me have been weak at best. And for no real cause, exept that you know im right that you are a hypocrite.

I dont think its that big of a deal when dealing with certain topics. When asking what a good build order is for Starcraft who cares if they use abbreviations. When talking about something like religion or politics, you should try to make your posts a little less "forum-like" or else you will probably lose some credibility. It bothers me more when people start harping on people's grammar and spelling than it does when people misspell something.

I'll type "lol", but only with friends I know who can speak properly as I. But when I'm with an idiot who seems to laugh out loud after every sentence, I do get annoyed. I'm fine with the casual ones, but stupid ones, well, are just stupid

(ps i'm not going to define stupid ones for anyone)

(pps rif made a good apology, and brood/fakesteve both were too big to accept it)

The bottom line is, I dont like nitpickers. Nothing RIF said was necessary or helpful. All he did was instigate an arguement, and then continued to press it.

His "Apology" calls me stubborn and intent on being angry with him. I'm not that petty, and I don't appreciate anyone saying so.

As for the "FakeSteve was too big to accept his apology" comment:

There was no apology. If RIF had admitted he was just nitpicking, and ceased, I would have accepted with manner and backed off.

I think it'd be more annoying to type: "Laughs out loud" than just plain "lol", even though it kind of sounds stupid when you accually say "laughs out loud". I only find it annoying when people only use stuff like "ur" 24/7 and every word they say is like that. But it's really not a "make a hole in the wall with your fist" type of annoying.

hehe yea my apology was to SoMuchBetter and DV8, thanks for trying though Rugbug, and i did knitpick... how about i say im sorry FakeSteve, if 'knitpicking' just happened to be your pet peeve. Even though all statements get knitpicked on the web.

But i would like to point out, i never once called you a moron or stupid idiot (which i felt compelled to do but avoided)... the argument was soley your perogative. A DEBATE was started when i thought using a contraction was hypocritical (which was an opinion, and i was flamed for defending it).

Later i added, you both use the same abbreviations that we all do. On that matter i know you guys started brewing in your seats for getting shut down. You both avoided being truthful, and you even thought the "hahahaha" comment really dodged the truth. Anyone that commonly uses AIM/Bnet/MSN on this forum uses these online abbreviations fairly often without a doubt, hence making you a hypocrite on some level.

And like Trance said, overuse and childlike use, is annoying. But i rarely encounter it, and if i do, i avoid the conversation completely.

Well, in all honesty i use things like LOL very rarely.

Calling me stubborn was what set me off, as well as the constant labelling me as a hypocrite. My arguement was not flawed

However, I'm glad to see you're a reasonable fellow, and I hope future debates will go a little smoother

wow that ended cleaner than most forum arguments. Well sorry FakeSteve for labeling you, i too got caught up arguing.

This is directed at no particular person, but howcome the word hypocrite is taken so offensively? I would take offense to it too if i think about it, and the real meaning shouldnt be all that bad. It just points out what we all do.

I'd like to point out exactly what made me angry, using this post.

First, the comment "all threads get nitpicked on the web". That has nothing to do with anything. It's really just an excuse for nitpicking. "It happens everywhere so I can do it here".

Second, the part where you say you didn't call me an idiot, but wanted to. That is EXACTLY the same thing as saying "I didn't call you an idiot, but you are."

Third, You called me untruthful. You have no grounds to say anything like this, and it's insulting.

Last, saying something vague like "Makes you a hypocrite on some level" deteriorates the validity of your own arguement.

These little innuendos in your "Well-meaning" posts do not go unnoticed. I'm not sure if you mean to to this or not, but it will anger most everyone who notices.

By the way, please note that this is NOT a flame, as Im' almost completely sure you don't mean anything by these comments. I'm just pointing out exactly what made me angry so you wouldn't wonder about it

well at that point you hadnt apologized yet, so i was still arguing. How did you go from shaking hands to getting pissed all over again at the same post? At the time those innuendos did apply, because you had yet to apologize, and you were the only one calling me an idiot. While BroOd persistantly called me wrong. Which is just an attack all the same.

As for calling you untruthful.. that was my attack at you. I would be hardpressed to find one web regular that doesnt use online abbreviations. And you specifically said i use "hahahaha" which was a dodge around the truth. Then you admitted to saying you did use LOL rarely.. and thats all i ever needed or wanted to know (because it doesnt stop at lol, you have probably used btw, brb, wtf, stfu..). It wasnt meant to be insulting at that point, cause i do it to... I really thought this was at an end.

EDIT: omg haha so sorry again, you apologized while i was writing this.

i did, and didnt find any of your posts. I havent tried a search engine if there is one, im relatively new here. You still havent been truthful... youve been shady even up to your last post. Just argumentative and rude.

Let me ask it again. Have you BroOd <--- ever used an online abbreviation without thinking its annoying while you used it? If you dont respond to this i hope you get banned form the forum because you cant properly argue or debate. If your asked a question you are suppose to answer it. Also.. i use my abbreviation in my listed places like AIM/MSN/Bnet. The forum tends to be more refined writing. So that suggestion by you, was anything but valid.

Hahaha, ok man if you think thats really the opposite of my point. Your post was about people not typing things out.

BroOd: "It's only a few extra seconds, and it adds, if nothing else, atleast a small shred of credibility to usually infantile posts usually negated by the moronic spellings."

If anything i'll admit that your abbreviated examples do not coincide with (btw, lol, brb, wtf etc.), but the same laziness with someone that types ppl instead of people, is not any difernet than you being too lazy to type by the way. So all in all your point is still invalid. And you sir, are a moron. FakeSteve was a man atleast.

I do understand your point and have said on several posts that i agree with you. It is still blatatnly obvious that you avoid admitting that you use these online abbreviated words/sentences. I would love for you to say outright you have NEVER used any of mispelled abbreviations.

For a completely and retracting point, lets say i give in and you are totally right, and you have never ever used the abbreviations. You still have an unhealthy issue with a very very NORMAL thing. We are talking millions of people use these abbreviations and think nothing of it. Majority if remember right, makes up a culture.

I have never used a grammatically incorrect abbreviation (with the exception of typos) that I can honestly remember.

I don't see how this is "unhealthy", so maybe you could fill me in on that.

"Majority if remember right, makes up a culture."
Not exactly sure what you were attempting to say here, but if you're attempting to prove something valid simply because of it's widespread use, I guess slavery was fine too.

I wouldn't necessarily call those flames. The first 1/3rd was a stupid ass argument, the second 1/3rd was the cheesiest appologies/home-erotic behavior I have ever seen in a forum, and the 1/3rd half was the inevitable conclusion when two juveniles try to make up even though they both still think they are right.

When certain words are getting used more often, people naturally develop more effective ways of communicating. When u say: "I hate this bullshit abbrevation" you are really saying that you do not chat that much, thus not having to use the abbrevations and you prefer correct english.

Bro0d, you're such a dick. There's a difference between using abbreviations like "ppl" and randomly putting z's instead of s's and generally talking like you want to be a gangster but aren't quite cool enough. There's nothing even slightly wrong with using shortened words like "ppl" "cpu" "etc" because everyone knows what they mean and they don't look retarded if the surrounding words are all typed properly! I actually think Hovz said this best .

Well, I believe any 'old-school' gamers would remember that this form of typing was borne out by the need to communicate with your team before voice over net became as popular and accessible as it is nowadays. Meaning that it is an acceptable form of communication for said gamers and just a good way of practicing 'short-type'.

Well, people are lazy, lazy people tend to accomplish their goal in the shortest amount of time. Therefore, spelling u instead of you would be the optimal choice. Plus, saving those "few" seconds, especially in the middle of a game (considering this is on an sc site) couldn't hurt, now could it? Once you become accustomed to typing "wtf u noob" every game, you'll start typing it more outside the game. And therefore, i just argued about a worthless topic T_T.

Once you become accustomed to typing "wtf u noob" every game, you'll start typing it more outside the game. And therefore, i just argued about a worthless topic T_T.

In game when time is of the essence, it's one thing to short type. When you're on a forum, you probably are not going anywhere for awhile, so it's not that big of a deal to type "you," instead of short typing it.
I'm never gonna know you now \ But I'm gonna love you anyhow.

Your point being that somehow the activity changes the laziness of the person? And its not that big of a deal to read "u" either, its not exactly torture.

I say "lol" when I hear/heard a joke and it isn't/wasn't funny at all, but I'm too lazy to type something that would actually show they were/are funny, because I'm just that nice.

Sometimes when I'm ping on AIM or MSN and someone says somehting so funny that just typing in the the simple letters "l o l" would take away from my enjoyment, I jsut smash the keyboard and hope they understand that I'm laughing. Hmm.. Is that abbreviation?

Do you flip out when people say can't? Because thats an abbreviation on the same level. Nothing is wrong with saying can not. I don't have a problem with internet abbreviating. It is when people try to make ebonics a full language that i get annoyed.

I nominate this for dumbest post ever. First off it's "cannot," not "can not." Secondly, "can't" is not ebonics it's what most people consider English.

Did you read my post? or do you always misread posts? Funny, i thought BroOd was an ignorant ass, but now he's flowers compared to you. You might first try reading a post before responding like a second grader.

If you hadnt noticed, i was a proponant of "nothing is wrong with abbreviations". So why then would i compare [can't] to ebonics, when obviously i did not.

When time if of the essense (in a game, chatting), all butchering of the english language is acceptable.

On a forum it pisses me off because it's not too hard to type correctly (I do it all the time here), but as long as I can understand the post I don't bitch about abbreviations and what not.

Overuse of "lol" pisses me off.
