*Note this post contains a horrible translation of an already horribly written article.
I found a small article on metro today about a game addict who went bonkers and tried to murder a girl when he couldn't get his Internet connection to work. Oh and his favorite game was Starcraft.
Imo the article is just another one in the ever ongoing discussion about “Games are evil”. Yes games (and computers in general) can make you behave violently when things aren't working but unless you are already mad they are quite harmless.
I know the question has been raised before on the forum but still what are your thoughts?
Translated article: + Show Spoiler +Computer game malfunctioned -Made boy want to kill
The computer game addicted 18 year old suddenly couldn't get his Internet connection to work. Dark thoughts grew about how it would feel to murder someone which made him grab a kitchen knife and go out in the residential area late on a Saturday night.
Seconds later he had tried to murder a complete stranger, a bypassing 15 year old girl. The 18 year old is now convicted by Nacka district court of attempted homocide and sent to psychiatric care.
One of this years many unusual acts of violence with teenagers took place the night of 9 august this summer.
The 18-year-old felt unwell and his thoughts became even darker when his internet connection malfunctioned and he could not continue to play the war game "Starcraft".
That a 15 year old girl on her way back home from a party would be his victim was never planned. She just happened to be nearby laughing loudly with a friend.
Despite multiple stabs the girl managed to survive without any life threatening wounds. The crime was notified the next day by the 18 year olds dad who found a bent bloodstained knife in the home.
Prosecutor Jennie Soderberg had been indicted for attempted murder. The district court however chose to classify the knife attack as attempted manslaughter because of his mental health condition, and that no intent to kill the 15-year-old girl existed.

Yeah interesting, um but I'm not buying the part that unless you're already mad computer games are harmless. That's some bullshit
lol I've gotten so ridiculously frustrated playing TvP some times. Also I felt awesome before I started playing, and after 0-5 I smash my keyboard and curse the world

computer games are harmless, yes. But crazy idiot + computer games is not D:

That guy obviously sick in the head I hope the girl can recover from this. Also the story does not make sense and the article was so poorly written I raged a little inside.
|
Any fool with issues + anything is dangerous. Not Starcraft, not games, just about anything. I hate how the media treats this kind of news.
I remember like 10 years ago there was a murder and the murderer liked to play LOTR role games. News media came to the conclusion that LOTR + RPG = danger. Then everybody thought all epic fantasy related stuff was some sort of satanic evil cult.
Few years the LOTR movies came out. Everybody jumps in the LOTR wagon. LOTR fanbase has grown from a geeky niche to practically everyone in the young population segment. So this makes all young people dangerous?
Now every idiot with no media filters will think SC makes people go out and stab teenagers.

I think it's funny how metro wants to spin this story to be about a specific computer game in order to find a scapegoat. I don't think anyone in their right mind thinks that Starcraft is bad for you in this way

Haha, I went to teamliquid to translate and post news about it today, but it seems like you beat me to it.
I'm wondering however, if he was involved with the community somehow. I guess it's hard to find out who he is, but there isn't that many swedish starcraft players. 18 year old in Nacka... hmm.
I was irritated by the use of 'war game' (krigsspel) to describe Starcraft. It's not a very accurate description of the game.

Well lets hope it was not some TL.net member that went crazy. Still that article is silly anyway. Did the kid tell someone he went out looking to kill a person because his Internet was out? How does that conversation go?
"So why you do it?"
"Well my Internet was out so I said to my self I'm gonna have to kill a bitch!"
Yeah I doubt his actions have anything to do with starcraft or his Internet being out. Sounds like some writer has a agenda.

Recently I've had to use dial-up internet, and sometimes it fucks up and drives me crazy with massive lag spikes that cause me to lag out of the game. Hopefully this won't turn me into a murderer as well, lol.

It bugged me that they called it a "war game", as opposed to a strategy game.
|
Don't tell me Starcraft isn't a bad influence. 3 years ago I was driving my friend around, and he suddenly started making Zerg noises and scratching me with his index and middle finger. I almost drove off the road.
+ Show Spoiler +I retaliated later by stabbing him with my hands while going tsst tsst.

Idk, I can relate. I've had some pretty horrible rages from starcraft.

It is a war game, and the name of the game also matters. It became an addiction for the idiot. Surely if he had been intoxicated it would be relevant to a jury whether that means he was on heroin, mj, alcohol or just a bunch of red bulls.

Eh... I guess. "War game" invokes images of Call of Duty or Medal of Honor or a game like that. Not really so much Starcraft.

Obviously the kid has problems if he felt the need to stab someone cuz he couldnt play..

not really worth joking about imo , the guy tried to kill someone i hope he finds mental help , staying away from the game for a few months and cracking his cd will cure his addiction - if he doesnt end up rotting in jail for 5 years that is

Intergalactic domination is not the same as a "war game."
|
I'll c/p my post which expresses my thoughts on this case:
About this case - it's quite stupid. I guess it was simply some crazy guy who wanted to kill someone and that's all. Then press discovered that he liked to play games (or he used games argument as excuse) and now it will be "obvious" that he killed because of game, lol...
You can as well explain that he wanted to kill someone for quite some time but didn't do it because he was playing his whole life. When finally his internet connection went dead he had nothing left to do and recalled that he wanted to kill someone but went to play SC instead. So when he had no alternative in SC he went to kill someone. Of course his victim was random, because he had no plan at all - because he chose playing SC over killing/planning to kill someone
In other words - bullshit ^ 2. This guy wanted to kill someone and used computer games as cheap excuse
And yeah, calling SC "war game"... You could call it "survival game" as well in that case - since Terrans and Protoss try to survive Zerg's invasion. Plus in multi it's all about winning - aka not losing, surviving.
|

He was mentally ill, now i dont give a fuck what triggered this whether it was nerdrage or something else.
You know about those high thresholds below doors that some people have all around their houses? So that every now and then when you walk around you kick it and your toe hurts like a bitch? my friend has those ALL over and i always hurt my toe when im at his house. On a serious note, I am very glad to hear the girl managed to survive. I feel sorry that she was attacked simply beacuse she just happened to go by.
I hope they do something about the attacker. He clearly is not sane if he just randomly attacked someone. The news article is retarded, though, at least the bit that was translated. Reminds me of this.

Why did they have to put a picture of starcraft in the article? So stupid. It's obvious that the guy has serious mental health issues and it had nothing to do with Starcraft, but yeah it's metro so you can't really expect anything better than this...

Actually I've gotten really fucking upset when I've played sometimes too. I think it happens mainly if you play terran because you invest so much into the game and all this microing all over the place, and you die because of something silly PvT. Or the games when you are all over the place with 300 apm and suddenly there's a huge recall in your base and you begin to move back only to get flanked and owned by stasis and protoss units + storm GRRRR
oh and the protoss user sits comfortably with 100 apm playing a war-simulation game, while you are playing a hectic real-time strategy game

the war game "Starcraft". that description of SC is just sooooooooooooooooo inadequate. i dont even know where to begin.

I think it is misleading (war game could be anything from Call of Duty to Risk), but if you look at it from a different perspective, it is perfect. StarCraft encompasses all the aspects of war - economy, production, strategy, tactics... StarCraft IS war.

Starcraft is a war game, as is CoD and numerous other FPS's. It is an argument over subject matter and style of play. The subject is an intergalactic conflict, aka War. Just because it is also a strategy game does not make it any less a war game.
On topic, I wish the girl a speedy recovery. Also if any of you decide to kill someone, uninstall Starcraft first. Don't need to feed the media anymore videogame hate.

I'll be the first to relate this to other kids/people messed up in the head from mental/social reasons.
In America, students came to school and shot other students and no one blamed the school for not socializing them enough.
What about the guy who works his ass off at the company for years but never gets a promotion and is basically the boss's and everyone else's bitch and then one day he comes into the office and kills people. No one blames the company for not having margarita Fridays.
It disgusts me that people (media) find a scapegoat in whatever will get the most media attention. Yes, starcraft can be considered a war game, that's because there are two sides competing for one goal. Every sport/game known to man with more than one player can fit this description of vague description of 'war-game'. Think about the golfer who misses a putt three times in a row and then throws his club or hits his opponent with it. Anyone blame golf for the cause of this? No.
The reason the media try to use games as a scapegoat for violent behavior is because the people in the media doing this didn't grow up with games like that. It's a generation's viewpoint. Our gamer's generation will all understand that it was the person and not the game that caused the violent act...but think in a few decades when virtual reality games might be the norm. When there's yet another virtual reality 'war-game' and then one of those players kills someone in real life, you know that someone in our generation (probably someone who didn't play games when they were young) is going to blame that new VR game as the cause.
It is possible for any person, given the right circumstances - mental health, social status, personal life; to go berserk after playing any type of competition sport/game.
In America in the old west, people were killed over poker games, directly and indirectly. Are people still killed today because of it? Yes...Is the media blaming poker as the reason? Doubtful.
Fuck the writer who wrote this article.
