How dare you compare Him, one of the greatest legends of all time, the main contributor to the enourmous success of France, to such an inferior and relatively incompetent loser who never managed to bestow enough quality into his team to help them achieve anything worthy of note? Shame on you!

It sucks that he's missing the WC though.

Fucking hell, Roma did not manage to take the chance, offered to them by Inter and their artisrty in failure, to catch up in the the Scudetto race.

...what?

it is true that beckham was nowhere close to zidane in terms of individual skill (and it is also true that he did not accomplish as much for country as zidane did), but then again who was? zidane was a player who was one of those clear "best of their generation" kind of players, possibly the best we've seen in the past two decades or so, but if you strip away all the media hype about david beckham he was a solid solid midfielder who contributed greatly to the success of manchester united (that midfield of beckham/scholes/giggs/keane was one of the most vicious in recent memory), and he was a main contributor to real madrid's liga-winning run to end their 3 (4?) year run without silverware (remember, he and van nistelrooy basically won that title on their own during the 2nd half of that season). he went from being ridiculously overhyped during his last years at manchester united to underrated when he was at real madrid, probably because of his off-the-pitch activities.

it is true also that england never won anything of note (or anything at all) while he was in their squad, but i don't think you can place those failures solely on his shoulders alone -- he basically got england to the 2002 WC by himself, and i would say that england squad would have been much worse were it not for him. there were a shit ton of things wrong with those england sides, and there still are.

he is an icon of england and of the game just like zidane whether people like it or not, but there was actually talent beneath all the hype and media attention ;p.

i don't know what it is with all these beckham haters, whether it's ignorance or jealousy or nationalism or whatever, but to call him an "incompetent loser" is quite... incorrect. zidane is also my favorite player of all time, but to say that beckham was nothing more than a loser isn't right at all ;o

shoop!

I did use the word ''relatively'', and that I stand by; I do indeed think that if we compare him to Zidane he is vastly inferior and nothing but an incompetent loser.

I do not bear any grudge towards Beckham, and it is my belief that he's a decent, hard working footballer with a quite extraordinary ability to provide magical crosses. That's it though. In terms of skill and raw talent, comparing Beckham to Zidane is like comparing Hoejja to Jaedong. Do not attempt to equalise mere mortals with God himself.

inferior yes, by a great deal, incompetent no, a loser no ;p. i suppose we simply see things differently.

he made that right midfield/wing position work without having 99% of the skillset of a winger, and he has won awards and championships that many footballers dream of.

i am not debating the comparison to zidane here, because there really is no comparison, but i see people say all the time about how beckham sucks and he has no value as a player and this and that and i'm just like.... nah, he's pretty good ;p.

This is very sad. Of course Beckham wouldn't have carried England like Zidane did with France, Becks nonetheless is still an all around class act with lots of experience. Ashley Young has been terrific this season though so England is set at right wing anyway. The Seedorf goal that won the game for Milan was pretty good

i full heartedly agree with this. behind all the tabloids and sponsorship you have a stoic, hard working veteran player determined to keep going as far as he can.

no one can undermine his charisma and passion and the unique game he played. People forget what hes achieved on the pitch; won the premierleague many times, not to forget united's treble, managed to get himself back in capello's real side and played a vital role in winning la liga then had the guts to go to the US and still be a serious contender for the national side. Not to mention he carried a largely average england team for the good part of a decade:

What more can you want from a player? Not many can leave their mark on football like Zizou but beckham gave it a damn good shot. (and hes still playing, just about)

Beckham's personal life has definitely overshadowed how good a player he has been.

I'm not suggesting he's in the class of Zidane, but he's one of the better players England has produced over the last 15 years or so.

He gets a lot of haters for his life off the pitch, but has been a valuable part of many successful teams.

He has been a valuable part of one successful team. During his tenure at Real Madrid from 2003-2007 they only won one title. That was La Liga in 2007 the year Beckham decided to leave because he was spending more time on the bench then on the pitch. Even that was a miracle they had to win the last game of the season in order to win on goal differential vs. Barcelona. One of the greatest head to head races for a title ever. Being down 1-0 they scored 3 goals late to win, to bad they completed that comeback after Beckham gets subbed off for Reyes who scores 2 goals.

oh man that beckham goal still gives me give goosebumps, such an awesome goal with so much pressure.

everyone loves beckham, that cannot be denied. its a shame that he chose to go to la galaxy/milan for the money and not stayed at man u to further his footballing career. cant blame him either though. he is still technically fantastic though, but there are also so many other players that overshadow him now and hes not as good as he used to be.

i also was on the beckam hatred bandwagon, or, to be more precise, I just thought he was a player that had a couple of excellent seasons at ManU and then lived off those two years for the rest of his career at Real, overhyping his true skills.
So that when he arrived at Milan I laughed thinking "he's not a football player anymore since at least 5 years, he's going to be pathetic". But I was actually surprised instead, he's still a decent midfielder, with still a decent stamina (although the pace is bad, but it's always been bad) and with his trademark magic foot.
It's not going to be a blow if he doesn't make it into the english team, given the plenty of upcoming players for that role, but he still has all my respect, because he's still a valid football player, capable of running and sacrifying himself for the team like any other midfielder.

yea beckham is one of the few players to go from quite overrated to quite underrated. the last 3-4 seasons he has been a hard working all around solid midfielder wing with some of the very best set pieces in the world.

not necessarily freekicks aimed at scoring, but the way he shoots crosses is amazing.

Inter fully deserved their win, they were a lot more impressive than previous years when they got knocked out by English clubs. Replays couldn't show clearly what Drogba did but imo Motta was overreacting. Great goal by Eto'o and great playmaking performance by Sneijder.
