i like to joke around sometimes and say that materazzi single-handedly won the '06 WC final ^^

i mean he scored the tying goal AND got zidane sent off. MVP play right there

Agree. It is about when, and he did it when it matters.

maldini deserved a balon d'or

He is without any doubt one of the biggest legends in the history of the game, but it's not easy to point out a single season where he did something spectacular enough to earn a Ballon d'Or. If they however made a ''Ballon d'Or of all time for defenders'' he would be the No1 favourite.

And yeah; Kahn 2002 was fucking majestic.

God, all this talk about the WC makes me all excited. I can't wait until next summer.

maybe if germany had won the cup kahn would have placed first (he got 3rd in 2001 and 2002)

also i read totti is thinking about returning to the national team for the world cup, somehow made me think of you^^

That is generally how it is yeah; the winner takes it all. Totti was the best player of Euro 2000 in my eyes (won Man of the match in the final ), but Zidane got the award because France won the gold.

Totti coming back to Gli Azzurri would give me an orgasm and it would increase their chances of winning the WC a lot, but I don't see it happening. Partly due to his extreme ability to get injured all the time, but also because Lippi has hinted plenty of times that he has no intention of recalling him.

Totti has never been known for performing at his best in the national team, but a pretty interesting thing to note is that when he does, so does Italy. In 2000 he kicked some serious ass, and they reached the final. In 2002 he failed and they got knocked out. In 2004 he became a retard for a minute and then Italy failed. In 2006 he did great once again, and then Italy won. 2008; no Totti = no party. They need his creativity so bad.

Ya, Materazzi was indeed an istrumental part of Italy's success in the tournament. Not because of his defensive abilities though. He was actually their top goalscorer (along with Toni).

And the bonjwa keeps scoring; 20 goals (and a handful of assists) in 14 and a half games now.

so sad watching pompey having to deal with money problems again, not very long ago, maybe a year? They had one of the better squads in the premiership with two midfielders, muntari and lass who are now first teamers for two of the worlds biggest clubs (inter and real).

I wouldn't say Roma are doing good so far this year; we're No 9 in the Serie A table (although it's only 3 points up to a CL spot). We are doing better than last season however, and that is most likely due to the replacement of Spalletti. Spalletti did miracles for Roma during his first years, but last season his football philosophy could be read like an open book. The magical and inventive 4-6-0 that centered around Totti (at the time when he took over they literally didn't have a single striker) failed miserably all of a sudden because a) it had been thoroughly analyzed and therefore completely neutralized by opposing teams and b) because Totti couldn't stay fit for more than 3 games in a row. Ranieri has a much more conventional idea of how Roma should play, and while it's not as flashy or entertaining as Spalletti's, it works quite well and is much more solid (it works somewhat well even without Totti). Totti scoring 20 goals in 15 games has of course also something to do with it.

I watched part or all of all the big games today. Man City played very well and outworked Chelsea to snap their streak, it would be hard to see City finish outside of the top four. Marchisio scored a really sweet goal vs Inter. Juve's midfield looked really strong with Diego/Marchisio/Sissoko. Balotelli needs to control himself and just play football, he did get abused pretty badly last season? at Turin. Barca scored two nice goals in the second half, Zlatan pulled a neat finish. Real's game was probably the best of the day, very nice comeback. Ronaldo got sent off for two yellows. He got the first one for taking off his shirt during celebration lol.

I have absolutely no idea what that was about. It's probably related to problems in the crowd (people have died in Rome derbys before ), but I have heard nothing concrete.

I don't know what I think of the game so far; there has been like virtually no shots on goal at all, but there's an intense feeling in the air (I sense it despite not being there ). Hopefully the game will open up a bit more in the second half.

Get rid of Vucinic, please. He's having a pretty bad day.

WAAAAAAH! :D Euphoria! The second half was awesome IMO. Italian football is dynamic.

Great job by most Roma players! I hate Riise because he's norwegian, but holy fuck what a warrior he is. A true viking. GranDe Rossi is king. Julio Sergio was perfect and made one of the most impressive saves I've ever seen on Mauri's shot. And the hero of the night; Cassetti! If I could've selected one player as ''Least likely to win the game for his team'', I would've picked him. And what a joy it was to see them celebrate after the game. It was as though they had just won a cup final.

I love Totti so incredibely much. It's easy to forget this, but despite his insane scoring orgy this season his main attribute is not actually goalscoring. What a playmaker he is. His unique vision combined with his insane technique makes him the best one touch passer in the history of the game. I can't think of anyone who comes close in that area. With a little modification to his playstyle I can definitely see Totti playing football on the highest level as a 40 year old if injuries doesn't become worse and more frequent than they already are. Please come back to Gli Azzurri so they can defend their gold!

The stadium looks empty because all Roma fans are in one Curva (Sud) and all Lazio fans are in the other Curva (Nord) and none of those are shown from the view we get on television.

As I said, the view you get of Olimpico on television shows the worst possible part of the stadium. Besides, it's not about quantity, it's about quality. I'll never forget when 3 000 or so Roma fans outsang the entire full Old Trafford despite being down 7-1. Seriously, PL has higher average attendance, generates more money and looks a lot better on television, but there's so little soul compared to Serie A these days. I mean, forcing fans to sit down; what the fuck is that about? The Ultras in Italy are spectacular when it comes to creating an awesome atmosphere (although they suck ass when they stab people and shit like that ).

Oh typo - except not expect.

Well, I have little idea since I'm American but the "soul" as it were doesn't come on screen all that often either.
Granted, I don't watch a lot of Serie A.

You can scream quality all you want but thousands of empty seats looks godawful any way you spin it.

Anyway, was thinking more of Germany; I think they do even better than the EPL in terms of getting butts and passion in seats.

passion in EPL is pretty shitty man. If you want to see proper support, you need to go lower down the league where teams are playing for their life and fans are not glory seekers. This is especially true at the older clubs, i.e. newcastle, leeds, forest
