Are you trying to get competitive in DotA2 or just high level play?
I would like to get competitive, I honestly just enjoy Dota more than RTS's and figure I could succeed more in Dota than a game like SC.

Yes please god make it stop. As for learning to play, I'd fire up HoN. It's f2p and is a small download, and will definitely get you acquainted with dota mechanics and skills. LoL is very different to dota but HoN is identical in many aspects to dota. You could play dota, but it can be a bit of a hassle working out servers/getting put on banlists for being a noob and general apem retardness.

Wanna get involved in the Dota* scene in anticipation of dota 2 but have no idea where to start after being away from dota for 3+ years.
*done you can play with us on dotacash
teamspeak is required since we're all on it, dotacash client, and you need a dotacash forum account so you can login to the dotacash client (validate on the website, dcclient realm and just put your account name in)

Yea this was my big thing, whether I should play some HON just to get practice on some level since its more structured for a newer player or just jump back into dota and hope for the best after being out of the scene for 3 years.

Just drop the charade and call them all dota. or dota clones. Everyone knows what's up. "moba" shit is so redundant and terrible and not even accurate.

What is wrong saying MOBA?
It's an absolutely meaningless acronym. Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. Call of Duty is Multiplayer, is Online and you Battle people in a map or Arena. SC2 is Multiplayer, is Online and you Battle people in a map or Arena. Street Fighter 4 is Multiplayer, is Online and you Battle people in an Arena.
Might as well say videogame.

I see. Thanks for the answers. I usually just call the game by the title. Dunno how someone came up with MOBA.

So has information been leaked about the rating system in Dota 2. I have not found any but I am honestly curious how it will be done. The first few days will insane and i want to plan to come out of them ontop.

Good luck there. Probably your best bet is to just practice a solid ganker/pubstomper in HoN alot, and hope that MM is kind to you when everyone is all lumped together. In any event after 2 weeks of play everyone's going to be about where they should be.

Only cause you're so fun to talk about.
And paper, first page the explanation about MOBA and why nobody should ever use that retarded term.
Edit:
Also, we should probably construct a well-organized and written post for players who want to get into a game like HoN or DotA before the Dota 2 hype.
I volunteer paper and his font actually writing for the entire thing.

I think a webcomic to the tune of "Idiot's guide to dota" or some such would be pretty cool.
