Do yourself a favor and don't bother for either, NA DotA is pretty much dead outside of literally 2 and sometimes 3 players. You won't learn any of the necessary shit for international play, like how to play with lag. NA players are pretty much irrelevant at this point.
PuG with Euros on IRC and try to get a semi-decent replay repertoire so you can get into some of the european IHLs. NA in terms of development is like a vine growing on a wall of fire, it ain't going anywhere.
Like if I were to go back to competitive dota, I would be on IRC looking for pick up games and then trying to get into one of older leagues.

Well I just started up HoN again after getting it for 10$ over break. I haven't played since the beta and there are a whole bunch of new heroes and items. Most of them are really great, except bubbles. Before a few heroes annoyed me, but the stuff bubbles says just drives me crazy. His voice + quotes are too distracting and I can't play him without wincing every few seconds. "sloooww down spooky" or "when I was you age, dirt was younger". WTF was S2 thinking?
Other than that the games is great. I had a little trouble finding the new honcast/honreplays? place to watch games. It is weird, not seeing teams like 5 and WHP, now there is SK and EG and MSI? I notice some big names like chu and his team mates dodo one other guy, and of course testie, but not much else. What happened to those big teams, did they split up and form new teams, or did other players take over?
Anyways after a few games it seems like I am somehow just as good except knowledge on items/builds/new heroes, which means I still suck. Do the people on the TL channel play 1400-1500 level games? I am already hating pub games, haven't given matchmaking a try yet.

You dislike the hero because of his acknowledgements? Oh boy. Anyway, you can turn those off in options.

Teams get switched up all the time. I'm not knowledgeable about it but I'll see what info I can provide: WHP got renamed to something else, 5 became SK (Testie is what matters, right?), and EG and MSI are fine teams.

People only really play matchmaking now because you get goblin coins and don't have to work to get a game started. Just shoutout for an invite to a TMM group and maybe you'll get lucky.

WHP -> x6 -> something -> probably something again -> EG, of course some roster changes happened but more or else.
Other big teams of beta kind of flopped. I forgot what Loda's team was in beta a year ago, but he was a brat and said HoN sucks when his all star dota team of him + kebap + akke kept losing and went back to dota, only to play hon again once in a while. I remember QuC, weren't the best but I remember them, they broke up due to Angel raging too hard.

How would I go about really upping my game? I'm around 1650 MMR(was well above 1700, just had a very very bad losing streak) and high 1700 PSR. That said, its pretty much with a group of friends, mostly a group of 3 and sometimes 4, so my solo MMR/PSR would be around 100 points less if I played solo. I understand the basics of the game but im just looking for tips from anyone thats good on what I can do because I feel I reached a plateau. And even though I play for fun of course, I want to get better  .

Because NA DotA you won't learn shit. The top teams barely even bother scrimming against other top teams.
And lag is hardly the obstacle people make it out to be, if you're a competent player, lag plays a pretty small role in the game. Spikes is another story.

This still makes no sense to me, but whatever. I have no problem with the hero in terms of skills/stats, but he definitely annoys me more than any other character.

So, I gotta ask, why don't more teams ban morph? I've seen so many games where morph gets first picked and then proceeds to rape the entire game, but yet he's rarely banned. Just seems like teams dig themselves a pretty big hole by not banning him unless there's something I'm missing.

because of the new pick and ban system 1st bans usually go to lucifer, pugna, vs., alchemist, broodmother, (visage, enigma possibly). Morph dodges the bans because those heroes are more versatile and can win a lane easier than morphling can.
when morphling is banned, he is usually banned in the 2nd phase.

Is vs really more ban worthy than morph in most cases? Sure, vs is a great ganker/support/roamer but morph scales so well and besides having shit range, he seems to win the lane he is in most of the time. Plus, vs doesn't seem to be getting banned a whole lot at the moment.
Still not convinced that teams aren't better off banning morph as their 3rd ban. =/

no, vs is not a common 1st phase ban unless theres a purpose for it
