Increasing the starting worker count could be done only by people with a poor understanding of the game. It is not a trade-off or a personal taste. It's a clear and quantifiable strategic variety reduction without a clear benefit.
For example, you always build expansions, because early aggression can't punish it. But now we'll get stuff like 8 pool, and people will have to scout or gamble. I hope stupid stuff like the third nexus at ~3:30 will actually become counterable.

8 was already too much for lotv and the stupidity beyond that might have been carefully planned but not by someone who enjoyed SC.
WoL was peak SC2, it went downhill after that and down a cliff with LoTV.

Lol, carefully considered improvement? Remember when we could still play on different versions of the game? How carefully considered was taking this option away from the players eventually (happened with the F2P switch, I believe)?
The only consideration on their part was viewer experience because SC2 had to be an esport before being a fun game.

A lot of people don't know this but... As a child math prodigy Tim was involved in some of the landing calculations made when the Viking1 and 2 landed on Mars in 1976.

We don't know how involved (if at all) Tim was with this decision. Personally I think he was just a glorified project manager with delusions of being a designer. But who knows?
It is amusing, however, how he's taking this patch so personally. The fact that he think it's a terrible idea makes me think it's probably a great idea. I do think the higher worker start made one-base cheeses basically impossible, which made games more cookie-cutter, so that might be interesting.

Tim definitely isn't qualified in making game-design decisions. I think as well he was mostly a project manager as well.
After I went through his whole voidlegacy reddit history it became apparent how simplistic his understanding of game-design was.
That said, ppl who think RTS games needs a long initial window of nothing happening but building workers in order to ensure build order diversity are unambitios and lack creativity.
In my vision for the future of RTS games he action efffectively starts within less than a minute. The important part though is that the balance/gameplay is designed around this in orde rto continue ensuring diversity.

I feel like the team working on LotV would resent it if Tim just showed up in June 2014 and overrode the people who had been there much longer, maybe since WoL alpha, with his balance ideas. My guess is that he made an executive decision to settle an internal debate, or just signed off on a settlement others made.
I also have no idea why he's so attached to the worker count after more than ten years, other than, well, he's Tim Morten. Maybe voidlegacy will return with a raw, unfiltered polemic on the matter.

Workers are cool and all but only if they also have other uses than gathering resources. Take WarCraft 3 for example. NE wisps can detonate, burning mana and dealing damage to summoned units in an aoe. Human peasants can turn into militia and help in actual combat (and then revert back to workers). Orc peons can man their burrows to provide defensive ranged support for the base (think SCV's manning bunkers and making them actually shoot).
There are so many creative ways you can design workers...

He's clearly using it as a way to tailgate (yet again) from his involvement in SC2, like: " Remember when I was part of SC2 development? I totally have a lot of opinions about the change I made in the game. Debt to the bank? No we are talking about how central I was to SC2 success friends!"

He is pretending to take it personally. Behind the scenes he is bullshitting about the scope of his job at Blizzard. With Team1 long gone it is now impossible to prove anything. Tim has a physical tell that takes an experienced salesperson to notice. There is a way to tell when Tim is lying. It is whenever you see his mouth open.
Tim's location is his dead giveaway. WTF is he doing in SoCal. SoCal sucks. Its biggest and only remaining advantage is access to venture capital raising specialists. Salaries are too high, costs are too high, Electricity is 2.5X , taxes are nutz, hostile anti-business environment ... Catskill , NY > Irvine, CA

I posted a screenshot of the LinkedIn post on Reddit.
And obviously, it was removed.
Good job Spartak !
Someone still had the time to make this gem :D

It's unclear what the purpose of the Stormgate subreddit is now. At best it gets one new thread per week. And they're not great threads.

Is Tim Morten, personally, working on this game? All by himself?
Because all I see is him doing is whining on LinkedIn and going to every single game conference and asking if anyone knows anyone who knows anyone who will give him $5 million to make a new game.
Spoilers: Nobody is ever going to give Frost Giant, a company with zero employees, zero income, and $2.7 million in hard debt, any money to make a new game. Not $5 million, not anything.

I think Tim is keeping a unicorn ranch.
You might say it's nonsense, but it has the same level of proof as him making a second game.
P.S. Totally unrelated remark: a few years ago I thought Voidlegacy was a pretentious teenager, who was imagining his credentials to argue and prove something to the world. Turns out I was only half-right.

Regarding the Stormgate subreddit, it was just another trick. It was official subreddit with moderators appointed by the company, masquerading as a community one.
Poor mods were trying to push the right narrative and bend the rules double time.
I still remember mods creating custom flairs like "insufficient evidence" and locking posts about Tim and his undead minions making fake reviews.
Ironically, the plan failed because of the same reasons the game did, including incompetence and nepotism (hello certain mods and Jesse Brophy)

time for some positive vibes guys! what a great match! great commentary! https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2404647033
i have some weird/sad news though guys. Beomulf's twitter account is gone? I hope he is ok.
Any how, guys, just for discussion purposes, who do you guys think were and are the top 3 Stormgate commentators of all time?
I put this question to ChatGPT and it gave me: Artosis, Tasteless and Rotterdam. I had to contest this conclusion and after some back and forth here is what the AI said.
So if we're grading on actual Stormgate mileage, not RTS fame, my list would be:
BeoMulf PiG Nathanias What 4th commentator would you add to create the Mount Rushmore of Stormgate Commentators? I love listening to Beomulf commentated Stormgate matches while I'm playing SC2 1v1s.

I know we're on tl.net, but the concept of tournaments, commentators, and pro-player-oriented balance before the game is even out seems so bizarre to me.
IMO, esports must grow organically. If a game is interesting to compete in, people will. By spending money on esports before shipping the game, you divert funding from more important areas. The game will be less developed, and players will be less likely to compete in it. By spending money on esports, you make it worse for esports.
FG spent a shit ton of money on tournaments while they still had ~30% of the game done. They had fucking tournaments with placeholder models. Then they ran out of money, made a surprised Pikachu face, cried a bit, and wrapped the whole thing.
Like, no shit. You spend money to show your game to a large audience, people see fucking rocket shooting deers, and refuse to buy it. If I didn't know better, I'd say it was sabotage.
Regarding the commentators, I think folks here are totally right. Some people highlight the same game for 20 years, some people try to jump on the new thing to boost their career. There's nothing inherently bad with it. There's always a risk. If a game you jump into fails, it might also drag you with it.
Now the bizarre part. Do you remember random race in SG? Because it didn't have one. If you lock random, your opponent sees your race at the start. Do you know why it is as it is? Because SC2 ladder gods jumped in, said it was terrible and needs to be changed, then they left.
Again. Players from another game pushed a change to the ladder, and then they left. And the devs fucking listened to them and kept the change AFTER they left. I still can't comprehend this to the full extent of its surreal fuckedupishness.
The moment I saw random isn't random in this game, I understood that the ladder will be terribly boring, because people who made this call are not capable of making something fun.
P.S. Edit. I play(ed) T in SC2, and I always look forward to TvR. Random players usually cheese, so I must count cheeses from all matchups, do an early scout, and branch my build accordingly, or even improvise something out of the box. But they might also not cheese. You know what it is? It's called strategy. You gather intel, think, create a strategy, and then execute it.
Usually, players who hate random don't like to think, they like to "operate" a build order. By removing a random race from RTS, you further remove "S" from it and encourage a mindless build order race.
