The "official" Shroud of the Avatar subreddit often deleted posts critical of the company, so somebody created a "r/shroudoftheavatar_raw" to balance things out. It's crazy how many similarities there are with these two games: * Both founded in a bubble by industry "veterans" * Both promised to be everything to everybody (Shroud was going to be both an Ultima sequel and an Ultima Online sequel) * Both had massive Kickstarter that promised all kinds of great rewards * Both launched to massive disapointment and sub-1000 CCUs * Both were mired in corporate shenanigans * Both actively deleted and/or shunned any negative feedback * Both lingered on forever (and as of right now, both have about the same average CCU count of 20)

When you see the same account comparing criticism to domestic violence, accusing players/critics of being Tencent shills, or claiming the RTS community was gatekeeping the genre, it became pretty reasonable to think that the account had some personal stake in the conversation. ‘Obsessive witch hunt’ or not, having an accurate narrative matters. And while I understand the situation was unusually difficult to moderate, the combination of combative participation and removing a significant amount of discussion was not a great approach. It came off to me as being a player/referee that is doing more behind the scenes than you think. Also the post I shared was likely deleted from the main one since that person used to post frequently to the main sub. Maybe he was also perma-banned.

Migrating to TL to continue moaning about a DoA game, people making another sub just to continue moaning about a dead game. I think much of the criticism is 100% fair, but basically anyone relevant has already heard them, many times over. I mean, spend one’s time as one wishes, a fraction of the shitting on Stormgate months after it arrived stillborn being transferred to something actually decent would be, for me a better use of time, but hey that’s just me

Guess every single StarCraft II player could transfer that energy to something more decent, right? Though to your point, I find the performative impression management by FGS to be more frustrating than most. Contrary to your point, it is objectively not a dead game. In public presentation by official FGS employees, it is still a live game in development that is expecting a patch/news update/roadmap(?) before the end of the year.

I'm well aware that there are many, many better things to do with my time than reading or talking about Stormgate. But here's the thing: sometimes it's fun to have something random to mildly obsess over. I have other hobbies, and I'm aware that following the endless Stormgate saga is not a particularly productive one. But it's fun. There's drama and intrigue and twists and turns, and the best part is that none of it matters at all. You know how some people watch reality shows? Stormgate is my reality show. Now all I have to do is wait to see if it gets renewed for another season.

You’re just observing the show though. I mean I’m here doing so as well and I’ve contributed plenty of posts here myself You’re not migrating to TL and only post in the SG thread. Or picking fights with mods, or publicising a second Subreddit to be even more negative. It’s just strange behaviour. It’s like when that bloke whose name I forget made like 40 videos about Anita Sarkesian. He may have had a point with his first couple, but there comes a point where one is just recycling material. As I said earlier, I think many of these criticisms are 100% fair, but at some juncture one should maybe drop it and move on. When development was active and FG kept sticking their feet into obvious bear traps, there was some value there. Either in the (as it turns out) forlorn hope they course correct, or if not that for some cathartic venting. We should be through the 5 stages of grief by now, really.

There is no doubt that Reimer is a more reasonable person than me -- that's one of the reasons why I enjoy talking with him. I took the bait when Gargonus got into it with the same person I do, toned it back, and haven't been warned since. Consider me a reformed person. I wholeheartedly disagree that it's just recycling material; for example the kickstarter post I recently had that showed that it's been about four months without response to inquiries from their Kickstarter supporters which is -- frankly -- really poor behavior. Sure, it's the same theme that we've come to expect, but it's absolutely different. Who knows, maybe this branching out may be the start of me posting more here and work towards a 26,000 post account. Everyone has to start somewhere.

I took the bait when Gargonus got into it with the same person I do, toned it back, and haven't been warned since. Consider me a reformed person. I'm only reasonable because I'm older and more mellow now, and I've learned a few things along the way. Back in the day I would post nonstop on forums, most particularly Ars Technica's Battlefront, with basically nonstop trolling (to be fair, that's what the Battlefront was actually for, it was designed to filter out all the nonsense arguing over which computer and OS was better by keeping it away from the other forums and contained in one place). I posted so much that I quickly raced past 20,000 posts and even won an online poll to become a moderator for the Battlefront. (The site owners, wisely, prevented that from happening). But in posting so much so quickly, in such a contentious environment, I ended up improving my writing skills. A few years later I submitted my first article for the main site and got my first paycheck. The troll had become a professional writer. I've been writing for them for over 20 years now, mostly one-offs, but I even did it full time for a couple of years. I wholeheartedly disagree that it's just recycling material; for example the kickstarter post I recently had that showed that it's been about four months without response to inquiries from their Kickstarter supporters which is -- frankly -- really poor behavior. Who knows, maybe this branching out may be the start of me posting more here and work towards a 26,000 post account. Everyone has to start somewhere. Indeed! And you never know what you might learn and achieve along the way. One thing I've really enjoyed about being in this Stormgate thread is how it reminded me how awesome old-school forums were and are. I used to post on TL back in the day like everyone else, but I also stopped (like everyone else) and I realize now that I miss it. These forums have no "likes" or "upvotes" to worry about, no karma and no stupid Reddit "achievements" to farm, and the text entry box is a god damned text entry box, not some Javascript monstrosity that screws up your formatting while sucking up 3 GHz CPUs so much you can feel your typing slowing down. Everything feels a lot more chill and fun. It's just words, and you're judged by your words, not some arbitrary score. And you can read all new messages in a thread by just clicking on that thread, whereas on Reddit there's basically no way to do that, so most new messages never even get read. Anyway, that's an off-topic rant. We now return you to your regularly scheduled... whatever this is.

It was a post asking about the upcoming roadmap. It linked to the last roadmap that Frost Giant shared. Not everyone follows the whole saga closely Sure. That wasn't the case here. It was a post by an active member of the community who is well aware of the state Stormgate is in. It was 100% a troll post by someone who previously got a temporary ban for the same reason. Actually, now that I check it, the user got banned by reddit as well after that post. So they might have also been doing something that violated reddit ToS on top of that like ban evasion, upvoting manipulation etc. It is curious that with so many people here claiming suppression of criticism for the game the three examples mentioned so far are one AI slop trolling post, one post with a leading title (the content of which was posted shortly afterwards and not removed) and an obvious troll rage baiting. You can argue we should allow all of those and let the place become a cesspool of spam and trolling but none of these posts are actual criticism of the game.

That was always just a rumour, least it appeared to me when I went digging. And not one I think is correct. Unless there’s some kind of confidentiality agreement, and I don’t see why there would be, it would be odd for Tim Morten to not mention it when he’s doing his fundraising tour.

A skilled coder working for Blizzard for many years with no exposure to UE5 can use a couple of years at Frost Giant to his advantage.

A skilled coder working for Blizzard for many years with no exposure to UE5 can use a couple of years at Frost Giant to his advantage. That would strike me as unlikely. Granted, Frost Giant have shown a propensity to jump down almost every easily avoidable pit going, but even with that I’d still expect them to have locked down Snowplay as company IP. The GoT game using it has only ever been a rumour, I think the most likely state of affairs is simply that that game isn’t using it. Otherwise Tim Morten on his tour would simply go ‘we’ve built a UE5 module that’s great, and look other developers are using it for exciting projects already!’ I don’t even know if it’s something they can license to others commercially. To my understanding it’s just some propriety layers built atop UE5 for RTS-specific functionality, something UE5 isn’t great at out the box. It’s clearly something FG can do for their own game, as they did it, but I’m unsure if it’s something they can actually sell.
