It does confirm the fact that if you buy Sun and Moon for 3ds in November you can't play it on your Switch in March unless you buy it again though right?

Doubt they'll make it available on the switch at all. I don't think they'll be making a mainline pokémon game for the switch until generation 8.
I'd be happy to be wrong though.

Yeah I think you're right. No Sun and Moon for Switch (they're probably trying to milk the 3DS a bit more), but they'll definitely release main pokémon games for it in the future.

I still wonder how the Wii U and the 3DS fit into Nintendo's future. I'm pretty sure the Wii U is done and the Switch is replacing it completely, but do they intend to release smaller portable consoles too at some point? Or have they fully switched to Switch + mobile games for smartphones? I could see pure fans of the 3DS and past smaller consoles being disappointed about that (not my case, I loved all the Nintendo portables I've owned, but I don't find the Switch too big...). It also might not be as kid-friendly.

Thats the big question mark for me, the WiiU is done for, no doubt about it

but what about the 3DS ?

6 months to a year of support then it's done
everything currently in development will come out and that'll be it.

nintendo supposedly already merged the development teams for their first party stuff

I wouldn't say completely done, games will be released cross platform while WiiU is able to support them properly. Zelda, etc.

They don't need to harm the WiiU's integrity in order for Switch to succeed. Switch has enough to offer that people would prefer it over WiiU anyway. They will naturally migrate without being forced.

The 3DS might live longer because of 3rd party support. For example, Etrian Odyssey 5 was just released in Japan so it's likely going to come out next year in the US. Atlus is known for supporting older consoles. I'm going to play Persona 5 on a hand me down PS3 next February. Not to mention the west gets games later than Japan.

I'm guessing one more Gen 7 pokemon game on the 3DS (Gen 4 remake maybe?) before Gen 8 on the Switch. The console kiddies making dumb predictions don't faze me since I'm going to be buying purely as a 3DS replacement.

3DS is almost 6 years old right?

The Switch is the successor/replacement for sure. I'd be surprised if they announce another handheld replacement in the next years.

It's going to replace the 3ds too, it's obvious. They just don't want to say it to not hurt sales this holiday w ad also Pokemon.

3DS honestly is unlikely to be left dead in the water right away, the console is too big to just drop as is.
While nintendo might not be releasing that many more games there's probably still another pokémon game coming and a decent chunk of third party games coming too, even after switch has been released.

Switch is going to be their primary system, period. But until then, any game that would work on WiiU or 3ds is likely to get multiplatform support.

Unless that Pokemon game is already in development, I wouldn't think so. Makes no sense to start another game on the prev console with the Switch being so close.

They don't have to do a remake each Gen, in fact Gen 5 had none so Gen 7 may not have one either.

Though only 2 games in a Gen has never happened either, hmmz.

It does make sense to start another game on the previous console, and the install base for the 3DS will be considerably larger than that of the Switch. The code base between games can be reused, while a new source needs to be created from scratch for the Switch. Creating a rehashed pokemon game on the 3DS is about as close to printing money as you can get.

But they've done just that before, like releasing BW2 after 3DS was released. They'll likely reuse the assets for the gen 4 remake, like they did for gen 3 remake and gen 6.

Yeah, they had BW2 in Gen 5 when there was no remake. I'm guessing Gen 7 is either going to have a Gen 4 remake or something akin to BW2. The Switch is unlikely to get Gen 8 until late 2018 so there's time for another Gen 7 game on the 3DS that could be multiplatform with the Switch. They have time to release a Gen 7 game next year or early 2018 while working on a Gen 8 game.

I mean i think if the switch gets a mainline game before gen 8 it will probably indeed be multiplatform between the two. Seems like a smart move actually, i'd definitely prefer to play it on the switch if i could.

And with the pokémon bank you can even trade between your 3DS and eventual Switch games, which is neat.

The way it worked is Original gen > Followup game > Rework. So, if they made ORAS on the DS it would only make sense for it to happen on BW2, except the platform was effectively dead at that point. Then, you have the fact that since gen3 came out on the GBA, going from GBA to DS isn't as significant a technological jump as Gameboy to GBA was, so from both a development and customer satisfaction standpoint, it only made sense to push ORAS back.

literally all they have to do is get pokemon, monster hunter and fire emblem on the switch and people will buy it up

i'd only see a gen 4 remake happening after the switch comes out. not this gen because you can still play gen 4 on a 3ds. we might get a digital distribution with some bonus something or other but no way are they gonna remake from scratch on the 3ds with the switch being so close

They stopped doing the follow-up game after Platinum. I still think there is going to be another Gen 7 game using 3DS technology that is going to be multiplatform with the Switch. They can't release a Switch exclusive Gen 8 game this fast after Gen 7. If they're not going to do a Gen 4 remake, then it will probably be a Sun/Moon 2.

I'm actually looking forward to it so maybe I can evolve a bunch of pokemon by trading with myself without having to trade with people online. I can't evolve pokemon like Gengar or Alakazam by trading with the Pokemon bank.

BW2 were follow-up games, don't kid yourself.
