Game wise all I have is MK8 and Splatoon 2... i guess pretty lame if you played those on wii U but I didn't so I'm loving it. I'm probably one of the very few people who bought a switch that passed up on Zelda completely. I honestly think that game just looks absolutely horrible (aesthetically) and that's a total buzz kill for me. Stuff like MK8 and Splatoon are a feast for the eyes... Zelda looks like a muddled 2005 MMO when I played a bit of it on someone elses switch. Also the whole weapon durability concept seems like it was bug the hell out of me too. Oh well. Looking forward to Mario + Rabbids and Odyssey.

Hopefully pokemon switch and fe switch (nexr year for both?) will be good. Also really hope we get smash at some point. Did you ever enjoy Dynasty Warriors? Because FE Warriors is coming out this fall.

I don't recall other Nintendos launching with such a lack of premium games or is that just me? After the WiiU, Nintendo's plan isn't to just blow their load and put out all their games super early. They've put out a major title almost every month since the system's release and have them spaced out to continue to do so for at least the rest of the year.

Switch already has Zelda, Mario Kart, Splatoon and ARMS. It's about to get Mario and Xenoblade later in the year. I'm still waiting until next year to finally pull the trigger. While the Switch is still light on games that personally interest me, I think the library is decent for something that launched half a year ago. It is pretty light on third party games however.

WiiU, 3ds, and Wii launch were all similar as well. Nintendo should include their biggest sellers such as Smash in their initial line up. But for some reason they tend to wait 2 or so years to try to spark interest with Smash. They definitely have more of a long-term strategy than most companies. But in some cases (like Wii-U) their strategy backfires and they are not able to recover from the reputation being tarnished.

Looks like a good contender for most overrated game of the year, between a combination of it getting default praise by being a Zelda game and the fact that switch purchasers desperately wanted a game to call good as it's all they had at the time. If a game receives such unanimous praise as it does from critics, game developers AND consumers alike, it usually means that it is just a good game. Your not liking it or not understanding what makes people like the it does not automatically make it the most overrated game of the year. Sure, you may find it overrated, but chances are that Breath of the Wild is one of those once-in-a-generation titles that will significantly influence what open world games will look like in the future. I'm sure there were people who found Half Life overrated back in 1998, right before it singlehandedly revolutionized first person shooters. The same goes for Halo on Xbox (2001), CoD 4: Modern Warfare (2007), Defense of the Ancients (2002) or Counter-Strike (1999), World of Warcraft (2004), Doom (1993) etc. These games probably had their share of detractors, but each and every single one of those were paradigm shifters; these were games that changed the way consumers, critics and developers looked at video games. There is no way that I am going back to any copy-paste ubisoft-style open world game after having played breath of the wild, in the same way that Dark Souls all but ruined third person action games for me. Once you've gotten your hands on the good stuff, you don't go back. It's like having to choose between Johnny Walker Red Label or a bottle of Lagavulin 16.

I accept the fact that for a large part its due to my nostalgic memories of older Zeldas though. I guess I'm too old to enjoy games in the same way as when I was young now. I'm curious, what is your definition of "old zeldas"?

Breath of the wild will never be able to satisfy in that regard, and I don't think such an easy game will influence much, besides continuing consoles descent into ultra casual.

As I mentioned I was a bit disappointed in Skyward Sword as well, but for different reason. Although I played a bit of the Zelda's before that, Ocarina of Time was the one that made me fall in love with the franchise. After that Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess were the titles I enjoyed the most. What makes a Zelda a Zelda to me is: -A strong story line with an antagonist who has more of a presence and actually feels more like an opponent rather than a caged animal (think of the small interactions you had throughout the games in other titles for example) -More scripted events in the overworld (like kakariko village on fire in OoT). -A large and vibrant overworld (which BotW obviously nailed but SS lacked). -Exciting dungeons with bosses that give you that omg what am I gonna find here feeling when you enter their room (and not whatever it was BotW tried to do)
