Am I misunderstanding this -- the Joy-Con controller is $80 to pre-order right now, and as I understand it, the middle-part that you attach to it to make an old-school controller is sold separately. That has to be a mistake right?

Nope, the dock is separate and costs $90.
You get one with the switch though.

That's just outrageous. Wiimotes were half that price IIRC.

I seem to recall paying 50 euros for the Wiimote and 20 euros for a nunchuck, but that's almost 10 years ago so I may be completely wrong.
edit: Still 70 euros today for Wiimote + Nunchuck, I remembered correctly

The dock includes an AC adaptor which costs about $35 if you buy it separately, so we're looking at $55 for a USB-C hub that has multiple USB ports and a HDMI connection. Looking at Amazon, this appears to be a "normal" price. Nintendo is at the more expensive end but most reputable brands will charge this amount of money for USB-C docks.

(But again, there is very little reason to buy a 2nd dock, you get one with the switch)

I never thought about how easy would be to transfer your game from one room to another with a second dock

seems quite amazing

Ok, but I only need one dock -- I don't mind charging the controllers one at a time. I'd rather just buy a second controller.

Seeing as how I'm waiting til MK8 to come out, maybe I can get one used at least.

Ah sorry, you're talking about the Joycon Grip, not the Switch dock, ignore my earlier posts then.

The charging grip is sold separately for 30 dollars. The grip that comes with the Switch cannot be used to charge your joycons.

Well I can deal with the annoyance of charging them one at a time, the thing that bothers me is the fact that it's a flat $80 just to get a second controller, and $15 or something for a non-charging grip. That's just absurdly overpriced.

For a console system that is also targeted to casuals, this all sounds absurdly complicated. A $15 non-charging grip is included in the system but a charging grip costs $30? Something tells me Nintendo's margin on this $299 console is 5% and this decision was made by somebody in finance.

Honestly I have to agree on that. There should be no non-charging grip. A separate controller should be $50 max and come with a charging grip. I'm still getting the Switch for sure but Nintendo is penny pinching here.

Also I just read that BotW will run on the Switch at 900p@30Hz. My excitement is waning....

I mixed up dock and grip, which didn't help the confusion.

I don't know the price of the non-charging grip, I couldn't find it anywhere for sale. One of them is shipped with the Switch but you can't buy any others? Idk.

Non-charging grip is $15. Charging is $30. Switch appears to ship with the non-charging grip.

Where did you find a price for the non-charging grip?

Wiimotes also had a lot less built into them. That's like saying a moderately used care should cost as much as my '03 Focus, the only real feature being a 6cd changer.

I don't mind paying $80 for a second controller if it really comes with all this needed technology.

It's the grip that just baffles me. Based on experience, some finance folks can be a little short-sighted with their penny pinching. It just feels like $15 is their target profit margin so they created a new part, the non-charging grip, so they could meet target profit on each sale. It just doesn't make any sense since manufacturing costs will go down during the console's life cycle. It's similar to their decision not to include a charger on the New 3DS.

That's how they ran into a problem with the WiiU, they released it cheap because of expected long run sales which didn't happen. The N3DS is an incredibly niche thing, which I don't think they expected to bring in people that didn't already have a 2DS/3DS beforehand. I know if I was buying one I'd rather not have an extra charge in exchange for saving a few bucks.

Aren't you able to just charge them with a USB-C charger? My understanding is that I can use my phone charger on this thing.

I bought the N3DS since I expected to have more exclusives rather than just Xenoblade Chronicles. I expected most people buying one to trade in their old 2DS/3DS like I did since most retailers had a trade in special to entice people to buy it. I might not have bought it without the trade in special.

yea id like to play xenoblade but obviously not going to buy a new system just for that game. That was a very strange piece of equipment they released

It was kind of like when the DSi came out, I just looked at it and thought "Why?"
