I never did get my head wraped around that part. I know some people work with TL as a full time job... It's just one of those things, if you don't get it, then it can't be explained. However, personally, my passion for Starcraft and the fun I have in the media side of things is the reward on its own. The friends I've made and the amazing discussion we have is what makes it worthwhile. I am among a group of people who get the opportunity to create content that the rest of the world can see and it's fun doing it. I get as much out of TL as they get out of me. As far as money goes: I learned a skill and got a job. Most of us don't see TL staff as a way to put food on our table. Pretty much this. It's hard to explain well. You'll only really understand it if you volunteered for TL and became part of staff. For me, being able to have a lot of input in how BW coverage is done and the direction that it gets taken in is pretty important and nothing is more rewarding than seeing lots of people enjoy our coverage of various BW tournaments. It's like, a writer's greatest joy to see people provide positive feedback on stuff that they put time and effort into writing

The people working with TL as a full time job aren't really making that much money as it is, and the amount of people who are even full time is extremely small (unless you count TLPro/Team people, but that's obviously a different entity and has more money coming in than the sites). We all love TL and are just passionate about the games we cover, it's really just a hobby for most people and I think 99% of our staff have never even thought about how they aren't getting paid. It's not really an issue. I consider my work on TL/LD/LL a hobby in the same way actually playing the games is a hobby. There are also some nice perks, such as press passes for events, you can get into contact with a lot of players, meeting all the great people on staff. The smartest, nicest, and most hard working people I've met in my life have mostly been from TL staff.
I completely understand where you are coming from though, and it probably seems weird to a lot of people, not just you.

Not sure what's the conversion rate though.

One ESPORTSBUCKS is equivalent to (at minimum) the opposite of your local minimum wage, due to opportunity cost.
... It's still worth, though.
