Besides the horrible name, its a pretty great game. Here's a trailer:

and a teaser:

Essentially, its a game focussing on the end of the cold war, with multiple nations present and a 'high' level of historical accuracy. It went into beta a week ago on steam, which you can get acces to by pre-purchasing the game. It's extremely complicated (over 750 different units), and building your 'deck' is an art in itself.

What I was wondering is if anyone else is playing? I played wargame EE and thought it was great, but it never got a sustainable community, and hope the expansion changes that.

lol, over 350 different units...so basically it will never be balanced. But it looks really fun for SPand casual 4v4 etc.
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

Balance will be a problem for sure, but the amount of units present less problems than you might think. A lot of the 'different' units don't actually differ that much from eachother, and a lot of them are in the game for 'purist' players: For example, every nation has 3-5 types of basic infantry (so around 40ish basic infantry total), all largely similar but with slight differences in stats. If you're building a competitive deck, a large amount of them become inferior due to sub-optimal stats and the game only has to be balanced around the 'strong' units in each category. The rest of the units only come into play if you want to create a historically accurate deck, like a norwegian 1970's army or whatever. The best comparison might be something like magic, where there are an insane amount of cards, yet the practical limitations on what cards you should use can create a balanced system.

As for casual play, it actually offers 10 vs 10 servers which start every 3-5 minutes and its great fun. It's a very hard game to get started with, due to the insane amount of choices you have unit wise and the focus on accurate representations of weapon systems.

It's somewhat similar to WiC, but the gameplay is somewhat slower.

they should really change the name.....I'm thinking Wargame: Airland Battlefight would be more consistant

I am playing this game since some days now, and its realy fun and very interesting. Yes, its complicated at the beginning and you have to learn some things before you are getting better. I advice to visit their forum for some infos and guides.
But once you learned the basic and get your first victories (good kill / loss ratio) in multiplayer games (1vs1, 2vs2, up to 10vs10) then you ll love the game =)

I am streaming from time to time, and if you have question feel free to ask me. I ll surely help:

The game is EXTREMELY fun to play. Unfortunately the majority of its core community is completely ignorant about StarCraft (they believe its a game with "few cheese strats"). Anyway, the new Wargame: Red dragon is comming soon, and now the game with ships is in closed beta phase.

It could be my favorite RTS of all time. Once you get over the initial learning curve, it becomes so addictive and fun. Awesome graphics too.

Well it's because the game isn't an RTS, it's a full RTT ^^ there are no real strategic decision outside of the dynamic campaign (which is kinda nice), the developer itselfs willlingly admits that some things will have to stay out of the game because they're strategic rather than tactical (aka paratrooper drops, which are never performed over a battlefield (and not really frequently even at the strategic level)

Anyways the game is awesome, yea, and surprisingly realistic if not for a couple of abstraction (the usual range nerf on some weapons (mostly missiles) and the sheer unit choice always keeps it fresh, only thing i'm worried is the price tag on red dragon tbh, and the somewhat questionable nation choice (no italy/israel/jugoslavia/spain and yet denmark and norway are in? o.O)

I picked it up recently, pretty hard to get into with so many unit choices. But after some play time you get used to what everything basically does and more importantly how to use it. It's a pretty good game, kinda like CoH but on steroids :D
