It's nothing like the GSL. EVO has always been a big event and they've always had very good numbers. HSC is actually a big event for what they're doing.

Evo has around 3000 registered participants, and that's only for the official games. The last pre-EVO major, CEO, had around 700 participants and apparently around 600 spectators. When the tournament is going on, people who aren't playing typically do one of three things: watch other action, go eat/see the sights, or play casuals/money matches at the BYOC stations or in hotel rooms. The love of the game and the spirit of competition are the driving forces of the FGC, and EVO is an even bigger example of that. The amazing thing about EVO is that it's mostly just an convention of people who love fighting games. Lots of people go who don't even play the main games, but there's no better place to find the people who paly what you like. Blazblue wasn't an official game, but it still had close to 100 entrants for its side tournament. Chou, who's there from Japan for UMvC3, has won SBO in Blazblue before, and he played in the BB and Guilty Gear tournaments. Kazunoko, also known as Inoue the Guilty Gear god, was there primarily for Street FIghter but played in the GG side tournament. People got to play these legends because of their mutual love for fighting games. Skullgirls has a side tournament that broke 100 entrants. Melty Blood has a tournament with a sizable turnout. Haitani and Sako, who are there primarily for SF4, are also gods of Vampire Savior (Sako is known for his amazing execution, and there is a BB Hood combo that basically only he has ever been able to consistently land), and both agreed to play in the Vampire Side tournament. When the tournament shuts down for the night, players will be up most of the night playing money matches and getting in games with players from around the world they don't typically get to play. It's awesome.
