Greetings;
This topic is to inform you of your opportunity to witness one of the greatest video competitions of the 21st century. On September 1, 2011 at 10:00 PM EDT, the world's four greatest Mario players of all time will be clashing in a head-to-head duel--winner takes all. Each of the four champions will be streaming his play live via various streaming sites, and expert commentary will be provided by our resident Mario analyst.
The competition itself is straightforward enough: the four champions will each play SMB3X, a hacked version of Super Mario World, for three hours nonstop beginning at 10:00 PM and ending at 1:00 AM the next day. Whichever player has advanced farthest in the game at that time will be declared the champion. Should a player at any time actually finish the entire game, he will be immediately declared the winner and the competition will end.
This year, the stakes have been raised, literally: each competitor in the tournament has put up $20,000 of his own money for the prize pool, with the winner taking the lion's share, all $80,000.
Here's a little information about each of the champions:
LordOfDabu--Dabu is a legend in the GameFAQs community, having contributed much to the site both as a moderator and a content contributor. Now well over age 30, as (by far) the oldest of the four champions, he has enormous experience in the world of Mario. He will also draw on his extensive knowledge of all video games as he attempts to prove that he's still got it. Many consider Dabu to be the favorite in this competition due to his incredible brain, which is more than three pounds heavier than an average human brain. Outside of gaming, Dabu is a known philanthropist, having donated subway fare to black people in New York on several occasions (with minimal coercion). It's also noteworthy that Dabu is the reigning World Mario Champion, although there was a significant amount of controversy over the results of last year's competition.
SSJ4Sonic--Sonic has proven himself time again in various Starcraft competitions, most notably in the 2003 Olympus OGN Starleague where he narrowly finished out of the top four. He's also renowned for an uncanny ability to become expert-level at any game in a very short time. A three time Go world champion and Honinbo title holder, Sonic looks to expand his domination to the platforming genre in this Mario competition. No stranger to the series, Sonic is one of only four people in the entire world who can truthfully claim to have completed every official Mario game in existence with a 100% completion ratio--all done with only one hand. Though he hasn't received the same hype as Dabu, one would have to be a fool to count Sonic out. As the reigning runner-up, Sonic is here to prove that last year was merely a fluke.
GoShox1998--The only prepubescent of our four champions, Shox's deeds have been well documented on teamliquid ever since his debut in 2005 as a 7 year old Starcraft prodigy. After achieving A- on ICCUP without losing a game in 2009, he attempted to become a professional, but he was informed by KESPA officials that he was both too young and too white to compete in the big leagues. Infuriated, he swore off Starcraft forever, and now, years later, he's looking to make a splash in the world of console gaming. Many predict that although Shox's raw talent for gaming is unmatched by any of his competitors, his lack of experience in classic NES-style gameplay will even the playing field. Shox has requested that if any females tune in to watch the competition that he not be told of their presence since girls make him nervous. Very nervous.
Goose--Our final champion is a goose. Lacking opposable thumbs, higher-order thinking, and mammalian heritage, our resident experts have all but ruled him out as a serious competitor. His caretaker sent me this message for his biography: "masters degree, disc golf skill, conqueror of 14,000 ft elevation mountains, conqueror of rad gamez". How a goose achieved any of this is a mystery to all of us.
Live coverage of the event from start to finish can be found at
www.livestream.com/abomination (or by clicking on the featured stream Lycaeus on the TeamLiquid stream list)
A little bit about our commentator, Snowster--While many kids get a bicycle or a skateboard for their 5th birthday, Snowster's parents simply gave him a microphone. The arrow to his bow, Snowster found a natural gift for commentating on just about anything he came across, be it sports matches, horse racing, dog fighting, and even beauty pageants. It soon came to pass that it was rarer for Snowster NOT to have a microphone in his hand, and whenever he opens his mouth, people listen to his velvety voice with wide-eyed adoration.
Be sure to tune in at 10:00 EDT to witness this once in a lifetime event!

Woah... I've never seen someone hype up people so average so much..
Exciting. Can't wait to see this!
Cancelling my colonoscopy so that I can watch this live. I expect Dabu to underhandedly take another victory. He always has a borderline-illegal scheme ready and with $80,000 on the line he is sure to employ it.

It sounds as if you are... just jealous.

Sounds awesome. :D Will tune in!

Thanks for announcement! Definitely going to attend to this! HYYYPE~

I find it hard to draw the line between the jokes and truth in the OP.

same here.
well i guess there will be a tourney and the combetants are "good". but 80k? LOL
is the hacked version so u cant finish the game in under 10 mins through star road?
or do they gotto finish every lvl
I can`t tell if this is an actual thing or not. Like obviously a goose didn't put up 20k, but are they playing with one (a goose)?
"SSJ4Sonic" Lord, if mods on TL weren't so ban happy, I'd make so much fun of this name.
Oh, wait. This is just a joke. Hmm, yuh got me.
Damnit, we should have told Raocow and AndrewG!
I will only comment that the competition itself is real. There was a 2010 World Mario Championship last year that you can search for on TL.
Not sure if serious.
I'm guessing this is a few guys streaming SMBX3, and OP thought it'd be a good idea to fix up the details a little..
Hmm alot of questions not enough answers. However in theory sounds like a cool thing to watch.
Who the hell is ShoX and why isn't he playing in SC2 tourneys if he's such a little boss?
To clear up some confusion:
1. This is a very real, serious competition. Each of our competitors is a serious gamer, and they all have been tirelessly practicing Mario the past few months in preparation for this showdown.
2. We'll be playing a hacked version of SMB3 which is considerably more difficult than any official Mario game. Play will begin starting from the first level of the fifth world.
3. VODs of each individual player's gameplay from last year are available, but since they may reveal key techniques, you'll have to personally request them from the players themselves.
I'm going to have to echo the confusion of the others here...
What the hell is this exactly? At least some (if not all) of it is obviously exaggerated, but which parts? So confused. Is it just like you and your buddies, or what?

No respect for the future 2011 World Mario Champion
Is this for real? I really can't tell.
I feel like it's at least partially true, but I'm... I'm really not sure how much of it.

The competition is real for sure. It's just the description of the participants that is totally surrealistic.
On August 26 2011 13:02 endy wrote: The competition is real for sure. It's just the description of the participants that is totally surrealistic.
That kind of ruins the whole thing, though. People who aren't familiar with the scene (ie me) will see those descriptions, then pull a OH IS THIS LIKE AN ONION ARTICLE OR SOMETHING HAHAHA 80K FOR MARIO CAN'T BELIEVE I BOUGHT THAT.
If this is a srs bsns competiton, I would advise to have more srs bsns for people like me (who I'm guessing was your target demographic, considering you posted this here and not, say, in some SM mod/hack forum).
Cool stuff, though.
I'm not competing so this contest ain't legit mayne.
>.>
how does the hacked version differ? I tougth that all 2d mario games were desinged so that they can be beaten in about 10min using secret short cuts. In super mario world its the star road.
or when you say hacked, do you mean like compleatly new rom hacks that you find on smc.com?
Last year LordofDabu was 26 and this year he is well over 30??? wtf I have no clue of what's trolling and what's true in the OP.
Will be watching anyway
I'm 27. Anything you hear to the contrary about my age is an outright lie. I actually think Sonic is older!
And it's a new rom hack. It'll be a blind run so none of the competitors will have seen the levels before hand!
Never been so hyped in my life.
I cannot wait for this. I would put this over MLG Raleigh anyday. ;o

I had to edit my post cuz apparently this is a custom made Mario? I thougth it was a speed run of the original game. Either way, Mario World rocks!
I read the OP and thought it was a group of elitist talented super mario players battling hardcore for 80k. I think I tend to romanticize these things too much for me to disbelieve them outright .
I'm sorry to have missed last year's run but If i know shox at all he was only commentating as an opportunity to study his opponents! I expect some devilish tricks from this years underdog.
Go GoShox!
I don't like all the exaggeration in the OP, it makes it hard to tell exactly what's going on. You can't post inside jokes on a gigantic forum like TL and expect everybody to get it.
From what I can tell, it's 4 random guys getting together to play Mario for bragging rights? Okay. Just say that, then.
What exaggeration? that goose has skills.
HYPEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, i so psyched.
Lol I like how the description for Snowster is exactly the same as GoShox's last year.
The OP makes it so I have no idea what's a joke and what's not, but this is one of the more interesting things I've ever heard about. No way in hell I'm going to miss a mario competition.
Dabu obviously gets my vote. The rest of the competition is hot trash.
Maybe a barcraft event should be setup for this. BARio championships or something.... WINNING.
I wonder where GoShox1998 got the $20000 to put up for the pot. Seems like a lot of cash to be betting at his age (13 ish?)
This feels like an oldschool tl thread, damn i miss them

GoShox1998 is actually the guy who backed NASL's prizepool. I'm not surprised he is throwing money into this tournament either because there is no way he can win.
this is going to be legendary
Is it gonna be a blind run like last year? It was a very exciting comeback in this mansion thing
Yep, it'll be a blind run. We're using the same game as last year, but starting right where I left off!

dont be concerned about facts, just be concerned youre gonna see the greatest mother effing mario players in the damn world competing for exorbitant amounts of money.

weird i wouldve imagined at least one japanese player in a world mario championship
last year was amazing, gl to all
oh my god i'm laughing so hard snowster is the fucking master i'm gonna try to get this day off work gogo Sonic fighting! this is your year!
I've been going through my playbook the past few days, I plan on pulling out some special tricks. Hope Sonic, Dabu, and the Goose are prepared!
Maybe stupid question but what's a "blind run"?

They have never played this hacked copy of SMB3 before, hence it's a "blind run." In other words, they are doing it on the fly.
Dabu fighting. I'll try and watch this
Edit: Oh wow, my post qualities are plummeting to rock bottom nowadays -_-. Still do not appreciate the false reporting, or whatever you call that.

Reading through the live updates (not from us!) from last year's topic should convince you that this is legitimate! http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=135679
edit: start at page 5
I'm I the only one hyped for this?!?!?!
Seems like good fun - don't understand why people don't get a bit of sarcasm though. Seems like everything needs to be dumbed down and written point by point for people to understand that it's fun
oooooh I can't wait! It's almost time! I feel like I should be cheering for Snowster because he's a close personal friend and teammate - but fuck that I'm putting my life savings on Dabu. I've known him on and off as the guy fixes the air conditioner at my work when it breaks down every summer, and also as the creepy dude that hits on chicks half his age on GameFAQs.

There must be a lot of money in professional Super Mario players then.
I've been informed that we'll be starting 30 minutes later (10:30 EST), due to Sonic's work schedule today (he'll be getting off right at 10 EST).
Hold on... 20k per person?
Indeed that is what it says.
it's today, omg!
and 80k is the "official" price, some rumors say there are a lot more.
Kishime here, I'll be tuning in. Is there gonna be a vent channel again this year?
Yes, I pmed you the info.
Hope everybody is excited! It's going to be a great competition. My favorite part will be at the end of the night when I emerge at the 2011 Mario World Champion.
For everyone that's not in the EDT timezone, this will start in about 7 hours - 04:00 AM CET.

"each competitor in the tournament has put up $20,000 of his own money for the prize pool, with the winner taking the lion's share, all $80,000. " thats so sick.

Obviously they are not playing for any money, they're just some guys. I really wish they would stop trying to hype their event with misinformation.

absolute genius. that is all there is to say
We're currently stalling for Sonic. Hopefully it won't take too much longer (sorry)
This is insane ._. They're not even playing normal mario, they're playing some harder hacked version. Balls of steel.
sonic is so brave doing it all for his sister
too bad he has no chance to win it my money's on shox now gogo underdog
the livestream isn't working for me. it's stuck on the loading ~_~
thanks for bumping this!
Hope it's as great as last year hahaha

oh my god dabu is fucking insane i cannot believe that over 250,000 people tuned in to watch this online but even that couldn't compete with the 6million-strong live audience League of Legends and SC2 could do well to learn from having pro commentators and true competitors
also the commentating had my girlfriend and i cracking up near constantly CLUTCH LIKE CHRIS WEBBER
You wouldn't believe what it was like at the venue. Not only were there not enough chairs, the audience had to stand on top of the shoulders of others in order to fit in the room. Every cubic millimeter of the floor was filled.
Thanks to everyone who tuned in, and congratulations to our 2011 Mario World Champion, LordOfDabu! VOD of this year's show can be found here.

What version is this i downloaded smb3x final and its different .

Hey if I wanted to play a copy of this game, where would I get it? What is it called?

When's the Mario's Time Machine challenge?
Not sure if I can link to roms on this site, so I won't, but I can link to the patch: http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=showhack&id=3554
The patch on its own does nothing. You have to apply it to a Mario World rom, which you should be able to find on your own! You can apply it using a program call lunar ips
