Imo, through the last couple of moves.. whites position has worsened considerably. Our pieces are very co-dependent and we're "a move behind"..

c1 keeps presure, but my intuition tells me Qf5 then Ne4 to close the gap in our defence, is the best choice.

Wow we have a Queen now? o.O

Really though,

27. Rc1

seem like the only reasonable move at the moment.

I've posted some more analysis to the tree, beginning with 27. Rc1. I now think that the closest thing we had to a main line is refuted at move 29 (see here for details); therefore we should start reconsidering our plans as early as next move.

wow every person voted Rc1? I feel like we just keep giving black free moves. What does Rc1 do?

Ok so:

27. Rc1 d3! Black is preparing the move Rc2. What do we play?

28. Rc7+ Kd8 Now what?

29. Rc6 Bb7 Now there is no way to prevent Rc2.

Rc3 with the plan of Rxd3 doesn't work either, because black can pin our rook with bishop moves.

For now I'm going to vote Rb1. The rook exchange would be good to reduce the pressure on us, his rook on the seventh (technically second ) is very strong. If he decides not to trade, Rc2, then at least we have an open file with our rook and more options than Rc1 gives us. At some point we have options like d6, g4, or Rb6 to try and support our passed a pawn to promotion.

First of all, you should put your lines in spoilers so our opponent doesn't read them.

I hadn't seen 27...d3, but you're right, it's looking very problematic. I spent a couple of hours looking at it, and I still don't have a good plan against it. Maybe there's some hope with 28. Kf1 (the idea being to get the King over to defend the Knight/d2 square), but if the best we have is to go back on the defensive, and we don't get the chance at a counter-offensive after all, then it does seem fairly useless to give up a pawn with 27. Rc1.

On the other hand, 27. Rb1 looks pretty bad to me. If we traded Rooks at this point, all of our isolated pawns would fall, and I don't think we'd have any chance at a win. Maybe we could get a draw.

At this point, I'm once again unsure what to do, so for now I'm going to change my vote to abstain. Maybe I'll change it to something like 27. h3: there aren't too many other possibilities...

Can someone please explain why Nf3 has not been considered? Maybe I'm missing something that should be obvious, but the way I've played it out it seems to come to a better position to defend the pawn push.

My thought behind this move is: White is ahead materially, we do not need to force anything -- let black make the first mistake. Moving our rook from the a file seems pretty rash at the moment. There are some tricky traps with this move but it seems like it can work. Again, I am not sure if I am missing something. Nf3 is my vote unless someone can show that this is certain doom.

Also, just out of curiousity, I am not seeing why that Rc2 line is so bad for white (not that I find the position paritcularly appealing. How does the rook get pinned per se and what is the threat that we are trying to avoid? The best I can tell is that white can just narrowly escape black queening the pawn by trading rooks and black bishops. The knight stops the queening and the king can finish off the pawn. It seems a pretty drawish position with bishop and three pawns against knight and four pawns

For me, i didnt like 27.Nf3 because white king might get stuck on the first rank.

Lines that I look at were 27. Nf3 d3 and here black is threatening to go Bc5+ so here 28. Rc1 is probably the best move except here black can just go 28. ...Bxa3 winning a pawn without losing tempo since if 29. Rc7 Kd8 30. Rxh7?? black just win with 30...Bc5+ 31. Kh1 Rb1. (contrast this with 27. Rc1 Bxa3 28. Rc7+ Kd8 29. Rxh7. and i feel that playing Rc1 here immediately is stronger than playing it after Nf3)

Other moves after 27. Nf3 d3 i considered:
If 28. Be3 Kd6 and black can win the d5 pawn without making any concession (such as giving up the 2 bishops). 28. Rd1 just too passive and black should be more than okay since we have no counter play and if 28. h3 our king can come out but it will be far from black d pass pawn so things might be a bit dangerous.

Not saying that lines after 27.Nf3 doesn't work since things are still quite complicated, just that 27.Rc1 looks like its clearly better (in my eyes).

:)
