I can only speak for heavies, in general you want a rammer, and a gunlaying drive. The rammer is almost mandatory i'd say, the gunlaying drive is not - that one depends on the tank you're playing. German meds for example are better off with a gunlaying drive, whereas US meds are better off with a vertical stabilzer. Ventilations are nice to have, although later on you may want to consider a wet ammo rack in your tree (if you go further towards T-44 etc).

In general, there's no real "mandatory" equipment except the rammer. And premium, if you spend so much money on equipment on a tank that you'll get rid off pretty fast.

Edit: might be wrong though on the vertical stab for US meds, they nerfed their "while driving accuracy" pretty badly. They were mandatory when i played on a daily basis, on the pershing for example. Since they mixed up the trees, no idea if the "playstyle" is still the same. For the germans it was the same up to the Panther II when it was top tier, then the E-50 - but i don't know about the E-50M, since that didn't exist at that point.

I would say that you want a rammer on every tank whose goal is to deal damage (everything that isn't a scout). 10% reload time will make a huge difference if you are trading shells with someone. It often means you getting the last shot rather than the guy you are facing.

Also tip for fighting the AT series of vehicles: From the front (not ideal as a medium) aim for the crew hatch. It's harder to hit on the AT-2 rather than the AT-8 or others, but is still going to be easier. The other option, if you have a large enough shell (and the T-34 AFAIK does not) is to use HE on the front, as it will generally splash the crew hatch and damage there. But as a medium, make it your goal to not have to fight an AT from the front.

That's easier said than done though. Most of the maps don't allow you to play how you're supposed to. One map would be Lakeside, and that's almost it. On every other map you're exposed as soon as you leave cover - either to arty or enemies heavies. Which is certain death, judging after ~1k medium games.

Either you snipe (that's what i did with german meds), or you play careful peekaboo. As long as you want to survive, that is. A suicide rush does not count. The only advantage as a medium is that you can reach certain spots before heavies arrive there, like the middle hill on Mines or Karelia.

Are you using the T-34 to farm credits? Otherwise, buying modules is fairly pointless considering you're gonna need those credits later on. Once you get into tiers 7+ you're gonna realize just how quickly t5 goes by.

So far, I've been playing lights, mediums, and artillery (I love reaching out and touching someone across the map) but haven't really tried tank destroyers. Yet a lot of the high kill counts I see in my matches seem to be tank destroyers - are they really that good?

(Disclaimer - I'm only up to an M2 Light, M2 Medium, and the M37 SPG. Yes, those are American.)

Biggest complaint? I haven't seen the M1A1 Abrams in the tech tree.

To the previous discussion of the AT-2, I just grinded one through to AT-8 and the advice given was spot on about the commander's hatch. It is the area I target when fighting AT-2 to AT-2 (a hilariously boring battle). It also seems easily tracked, so hit that or simply have enough speed to zoom around the mediocre fire arcs and hit from side or back. The AT-2 turns like the Titanic, it will be easy to avoid (and makes the AT-2 driver feel absolutely terrible, I've been there...). Artillery targeting or simple avoidance can also work.

It is fun to destroy god-complex KVs though who refuse to hit weak points or back off. I still keep mine as an enjoyment-driven credit farmer, particularly to take advantage of this weekend's event. AT-8 doesn't feel the same, I suspect the armor sloping is worse as my friends suggested.

I'm still not particularly good at the game though, AT-2 helps mask my inexperience and I harbor no delusions about that. Doesn't stop me from grinding away my dailies and driving the thing though, particularly during this event at the least.

If you're looking for a platoonmate to break the solitude and don't rage at the game (or me) too much, I can run Tiers 2-6 (preferred Tiers 2-5), on NA with the same name as you see here.

TD's are nearly unbeatable 1v1 in a fixed position, but they get out maneuvered really easily. You're fairly dependent on your team not to suddenly die and get overran on one side of the map and compromise your position. All it takes is 1 damaged track and you're dead. Stationary TD's are also an easy target for artillery who begin to 2 shot tanks at tiers 6+.

I wouldn't just go for any TD for the sake of going for a TD though. Now that you're exposed to them, I'd suggest you figure out which specific TD you wanna go for and make sure its top of the line upgrade (tier 10) is ultimately worth it. Top td's atm are the T110E4, FV215B, FOCH, and Obj 268. There are some really good non-tier 10 TD's scattered across the various lines too, but you might end up committing to a tree you may not like.

edit: You also haven't really gotten to see the heavy tanks. You probably won't get a real feel for how the tank classes play out til tier 5, which is where the big heavies and big gunned mediums come out, TD's become near impervious to frontal shots, and at tiers 7+ the scouts get really good guns that don't bounce 90% of the time and the arty can reach across the entire length of any map for half your HP.

started playing again recently - I have a gwpanther and a vk3601h. trying to figure out what I want to try to work to now; I'm told getting german spgs above what I have now are a waste, but I kind of want a stronger spg. also want a heavy tank; any thoughts?

Arty is the devil and it's going to be nerfed rather severely (again) in 8.6 (sadly, nerfs to rate of fire among other things but not alpha). If you're looking at end tier arty, the American T92 is the hammer of the gods (biggest splash), the Russian Object 261 is the 800 meter sniper (best accuracy), and the French Bat 155 is trollolol (4 round drum, fast as a medium tank, turret). The GW Type E gets defended at various points by people, it has the second best splash, good accuracy and decent rate of fire, it's just not best in class in one of the areas which is why it's typically the least liked. Arty's also going to get stretched out to tier X in 8.6, current tier VIII will be tier X and various and sundry shifts will occur in the ranks.

For heavy tanks, the Tiger P is really good, generally regarded as the second best tier VII heavy behind the American T29 and its hilariously powerful turret. The Tiger II is a little less widely loved but is still very effective (the IS-3 is the best tier VIII), and the E-75 is widely regarded as the best tier IX heavy. The E-100 has seen a bit of a resurgence thanks to premium ammo for silver as its main gun with HEAT is really powerful, but as HEAT gets nerfed in the places that need it (tier V mediums, the Carbon T-54) it might be relegated to ineffective and underarmored again.

The American E5 and the T57 are the most used heavy tanks in clan wars, although again with the HEAT nerf and the other nerfs that might be coming the T57 might not be as well regarded in the near future. If HEAT is severely nerfed, the E5 will still be a fantastic all purpose tank as it's essentially a very well armored medium with excellent gun depression, maneuverability, accuracy, rate of fire.. etc. The IS-4 and IS-7 are generally disliked but are serviceable pub stompers. The British Conqueror at tier IX is well liked but the FV215b is widely regarded as terrible and it's been rumored as being targeted for eventual replacement (people are lobbying for the Chieftain).

French tanks, the 50 100, 50 120 and 50B all offer exceptional firepower with no armor, so at tier VIII the 50 100 is very well liked and frequently employed in tournaments, the 50 120 is a ferocious pubstomper and the 50B is generally loathed. They're among the easiest one shots for arty in the game with their unarmored gasoline lined helicopter decks mounted behind the turrets. Chinese tanks offer fantastic alpha and good penetration with hilariously long aim time, huge aim bloom on the move, poor accuracy and unreliable armor. The tier X 113 is one of the few tanks I haven't killed yet because no one drives them.
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

TDs are generally high DPS. They rely on other tanks to actually spot for them in most cases (some TDs like the AT line don't follow this trend), they generally have good frontal armor but basically nothing anywhere else, powerful and accurate guns, and with the exception of one of the American lines, do not have turrets, meaning that they are extremely weak when fighting at close range, since they need to rotate the entire vehicle to face the enemy.

As for the Abrams, I think the US military could have used a few in the Korean War, but sadly they were not being produced in that time period. Only a few decades too early. Tier 10 tanks are basically 1960s tanks.

You're right in almost everything, except the part with high DPS. They have an incredible alpha, but "bad" DPM. The E100 Stug can almost oneshot everything, but needs a couple of days to reload after that - a E50M (the 10,5 on E50 was the highest DPM gun ingame when i played) has higher DPM, for example. But way worse alpha.

Edit: also TDs are very weak against arty-damage, since a splash hit in most cases (not speaking T95, but in general) will drop one or both your tracks, which in a case of a tank without a turret just means death, pretty quick.

That's subjective. I would say that the KT is the best t8, though I love the is3 as well. You don't play them the same way. The is3 is a brawler while the KT is a sniper. You usually would try to stay further from your enemies with the KT and use the deadly accuracy of the L68 to shoot where you need to. Not to forget that the KT has a smooth frontplate, which makes artificial angling much easier and practical than the is3.
If that is your preferred playstyle, I would advise getting the KT instead of the is3 if you're aiming for a t8 heavy.

I agree wholeheartedly, the KT is one if not THE best tank in the game. The E-75 is right up there as well (i have unlocked the E100, but don't want to switch^^). About the new Objects, didn't check them, so they might have higher DPM, but that's new then. Germans for example do not have higher DPM than meds, that i know for sure.
