I'm kinda confused now as to how it works. Cheers! It basically means once you're over the cap, then it becomes very expensive to pay, I think it's 1:1 per dollar spent over the cap. That's for teams and is meant to keep teams like the Lakers from spending exorbitant amounts (because they have superior revenue streams) on all of the top flight players (which would kill small market teams). It's also not a definitive hard cap, meaning teams can go over it if they wish, it would just cost a lot. There are also incentives for owners to not go over the cap (about a few million dollars). For players it's a little different and tricky. There are age restrictions, playing time conditions, experience, etc. AKA a lot of variables. If you're interested, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_Salary_Cap, it does pretty job explaining all the workings.

edit: and yea read the salary cap rules if you want to begin to understand why small market teams continually suffer without some great luck, and why players really do sometimes GO FOR THE MONEY. NBA owners are fucking raking in cash.

Like if your team continually ends in the bottom 3 of your conference (for like 3 seasons), you don't receive any of the luxury tax pie.

Yea it's ridiculous.Your team is failing hard and your fan base is suffering BUT the owners still have incentives to not make the team better and still make money? What the hell is the point in trying to build a solid team. To make it even worse some of these teams have sucked for years and the NBA brass just acts like these GMs and Managers aren't tanking on purpose.

One year in the bottom 3 and being punished seems a bit too extreme? haha I kinda wish they did. Right now it's do horrible and draft a great superstar then MILK the guy for all you can, then once they've served their purpose and you haven't built a team with/around him cut your losses and tank. Rinse and repeat.

Man, I hope the Suns sweep and the Jazz/Lakers goes 6-7 so the Suns are rested. The Suns are truly unstoppable on offense, whatever you do to try to adapt to them they punish you for.

Suns going to the finals would be insane though. The only team in the East I'd give them a shot of beating is Orlando. It's like Phoenix doesn't even care if they can't score inside, they'll just shoot from half court.

IMO the suns can play anyone. All of the criticism of the past suns teams has been addressed extremely well-defense, bench, chemistry-and they have some new things they didn't have before, like Hill's versatility.
