If ever there was a team that would be used as an example of "team first" and a system being in place to make the team most successful rather than just being run by an individual, it would be the spurs. Each player has a role, and they do it well and don't try to be a star. Duncan on another crappy team would NOT have the same success as the spurs. The spurs win because they are a team first. Your point my be correct, but not about the spurs at all. They do play team basketball (more on the defensive end than anything), but during big games they lived and died with Timmy. His worst game of the '99 finals was the one they lost. They played a vastly inferior Minnesota team in 2001, and lost one game despite a very strong effort from the Admiral, with Duncan putting up a statline of 15/10/6TOs. Stats don't even represent Duncan's importance to the Spurs. He spearheads the communication on D and always has a habit of making solid decisions down the stretch. Moreover, having their leader stay calm and level-headed under duress is a huge boon for his supporting cast. In TD's prime, the Spurs would be a playoff team without any one of their components (even Parker/Ginobili), and probably a 27-55 team without Duncan. He meant more to his team than anyone else in the league during the Spurs dynasty years. There's a reason he took those MVPs away from Shaq despite having statistically inferior seasons.

He's basically carrying a scrub .500 team to a possible NBA Championship and all you can focus on is the negative crap? Put your Laker fanboyism away for 2 secs and just enjoy the man's game. Yeah he may be cocky, but if anyone deserves to be it's him. Could you imagine the damage he'd do if he had a team like the Celts/Lakers/Magic/even the Suns around him? I know it hurts that Kobe isn't the best player in the NBA anymore, but it's time to move on. LBJ being MVP doesn't make Kobe any less of a player, so just sit back and enjoy the fun! Heh :p, the average evaluations of Lebron's supporting cast are getting worse and worse with his playoff problems. If Boston wins the series the Cavs are going to be portrayed as worse than the Nets. They had a 60+ win team last year and improved it dramatically. I do agree about who cares about Lebron vs. Kobe. It's Wade. :o

He's basically carrying a scrub .500 team to a possible NBA Championship and all you can focus on is the negative crap? They're better than a ,500 team because of Jamison, and because Shaq is getting calls like the refs don't know he's a slow, washed up non jumping sack of turds. When Shaq is being allowed to throw his weight around the court then Cleveland is as good as any one, and when he's not... well, they're till pretty good. Chicago was a .500 team this year despite having a ton of important injuries, and gutting their roster to make free agent cap space. Cleveland without Lebron is at least as good as Chicago without Lebron, which makes them in all likelihood more like a .550 or .600 team. I agree that Lebron is the best player in the NBA though. That's not exactly a controversial believe, judging by the MVP voting. Last year was probably the first year of his career where his game actually matched the hype. It will be interesting to see if the hype gets ratcheted even higher after this summer.

As for Lebron he isn;t the best because he hasn't won it all yet nor has he shown he has the killer instinct. Kobe and Wade both beat him here. Also using stats is a TERRIBLE idea on calling someone the best player in the league(have we forgotten Tracy McGrady?). Lastly one of my major gripes with people calling Lebron the best is that people don't realize has no post game. He is a pure point forward that can dominate in iso's but gets crushed by fast wing defenders with paint patrol help (see Orlando, see 2008 Celtics, see Lakers). Lebron is great but he isn't complete YET. Stop giving him the pass when he hasn't earned it yet. Kobe and Wade are both offensively and defensively better than Lebron and both still throw up huge stat lines when they have to. Watch the games objectively and not from a fan standpoint and you'll realize why some people hate the hype. Just be fearful that he IS this good and hasn't even come close to his ceiling yet.

and it's because I can almost guarantee that the number of people who've played competitive basketball at a high level in this thread is pretty low and the average fan doesn't know the game well enough to know what they're talking about :p just like most SC2 commentators and spectators don't know anything.
