8 defensive sounds like a waste, I'd say either do 9/0/21 + mpen/mp5pl/mp5pl for full caster setup or 9/21/0 + mpen/dodge/mp5pl to get the full damage reduction spec. I always went 9/21/0, but eh, w/e you feel more comfortable with, I just don't get what 8 in defense really gives you.

I think I was fooling around with 9/0/21 and 1/8/21, didn't really notice much of a difference either ways (except like a 4 second faster cd on ult!). Because of the way mpen/apen works now I don't think the 15% is sizable on Amumu anymore, so it'd mostly just be for the 3% CD. Can't say it considered it a big deal, so I just started popping stuff into MR and physical damage block (to take less from creep).

meh, it's not like you're getting a whole lot out of your item build in the way of mpen, so really the only change in how effective the 15% mpen is on amumu would be the fact that you're not getting 15% of the ~10 you're flat reducing from runes, which all tolled adds up to just about 1.5 pen less than before (unless you were getting sorc shoes/void staff/haunting guise on him... but abyssal, the best mpen choice for amumu, is unaffected).

I like jumping on that lane at level 6 though cause they're constantly pushing and are pretty squishy, it's usually at least 1 kill.

His passive makes him reduce MR upon striking, so that's where most of the mpen comes from.

well, again, the interaction is no different than pre-patch, as reductions and % penetration still apply in the same order. *shrugs* maybe it was never a good idea to get 15% pen with him, but I don't think it's much different now than it was pre-patch because he's much more about reduction than flat pen. His ult does have a stupidly high enough CD that it might be worth it just for the CDR anyway though. w/e, I think the result of this discussion is that we've determined that as long as you're not putting more than 9 into offensive with amumu, you're probably fine with whatever mastery setup you want.

30 is really really standard starting MR. I think pretty much everyone has a starting MR in the 30-32 range. And I don't think it grows for anyone. Which is dumb. Especially since MR items suck compared to Armor items.

if I had to guess, I'd say he still gets it because spell vamp barely mattered anyway, and it still gives the magic pen that he actually buys it for and it gives more health and AP to boot.

Weird, when I run Malphite I thought I found myself staring at 90 MR with Treads and Aegis, and I'm fairly sure those two don't add up to 60, but I'm probably just imagining things. I was just bewildered when I was staring at 55 MR with Amumu :x

I guess they add up to around 50, and I was probably staring at around 80. Interesting.
