There is a case to be made that Billy Bob was the best player in 2015. The issue is that variance exists in Melee, and the best player at EVO may not be the "true" best player. Players have good days and bad days. Billy Bob's true skill may be higher than what he showed at EVO, or it may be lower. Someone ranking the players may say, "Billy Bob's play was so good that I am comfortable that he would win a matchup against any top player. I'm ranking him #1." Or, another pundit might say, "We didn't see Billy Bob against Hungrybox or against any competent Marth, so I don't feel comfortable saying he would match his EVO success if he attended more tournaments." The point is that a lack of data should not automatically count against a player, unless we feel that attending tournaments is an act worth rewarding. Lack of data simply places a burden on observers to draw inferences based on the little data that exists. To say that PPMD was clearly better than Hungrybox in 2015 is either to claim that no one could reasonably draw the inference that he would have put up comparable performances at tournaments other than Apex/EVO (a questionable claim) or to claim that the act of attending tournaments itself should be part of the criterion of the MIOM rank (something I would not agree with). I don't have any issue with saying that PPMD should be 5th, but I do have an issue with the language implying that no reasonable person could put him above Hungrybox. In the end, lack of data just means that many different opinions are valid.

So suffice it to say, a lack of data should not count for a player. I personally think PPMD's performance at EVO should have damaged him quite a bit. He still got 3rd but it wasn't exactly pretty. He beat SFAT, HugS and Plup. His road was significantly easier than Hbox's and it was still sloppy.

to claim that the act of attending tournaments itself should be part of the criterion of the MIOM rank I simply don't understand why you don't agree with this. How do you rate someone/something when there isn't enough data? To me that makes very little sense. It's a guessing game at this point which is a bad thing. Lack of data doesn't really count "against" the player, but the lack of data makes it almost impossible to find things which count FOR him at the same time. Another problem is what a list wants to achieve (what timeframe are we considering?), etc

Of course, all the people who did the voting will still weight recent tournaments differently and all that...

Bo5 > being able to stream the tournament Pot's too small. Don't think you can have both tbh, not without multiple streams.

changing entry from 3 to 5 pounds would have added like 700 pounds to the pot and would have affected none of the entrants (5 pound entry for a major tournament is still pretty cheap if you ask me).
