So easy, even fictional, animated characters can do it!

Winning the OSL Is Easy!
by DJEtterStyle
TeamLiquid: Final Edits

Like a dog delivering a dead animal to his owner, I feel utterly compelled to share my opinions with the masses, unwelcome though they may be. But this time, the joke’s on you! By clicking on the link to this article, you’ve asked for my opinion. You want it. You’re begging for it. So I’m almost ashamed to confess that this article contains no opinions whatsoever; it’s nothing but cold, hard science. And because all good science starts with a conclusion, I’ll provide one: winning the OSL is easy.

It’s so easy, in fact, that I have to wonder how the revelation escaped so many lesser minds. My powerful brain is usually preoccupied with how to reform the reactionary structure of the American government, the history of literary criticism, and female gymnasts. So for me to spend my time pondering how to win the OSL seems like a waste of talent, and indeed, it was: I could have watched at least three floor exercises in the time it took me to research this article. Regardless, please allow me to present my exhaustive research. By following these simple steps, anyone can win the OSL!
  • Go to Korea (South).
  • Go 12-0 in the Courage League.
  • Go 6-0 in the PSL.
  • Go 9-0 in the OSC.
  • Go 11-0 in the OSL.
I can already hear the loud-mouthed and annoying among you saying, “But that’s 38 straight wins! That seems like a lot!” Well, the terms “seems” and “a lot” are wholly unscientific by definition, meaning that they have no place in a serious, scientific article such as this one. So all you’ve really said is, “But that’s 38 straight wins!” And indeed, it is. But it doesn’t have to be.
  • Go to Korea (South)
  • Go 12-6 in the Courage League.
  • Go 6-3 in the PSL.
  • Go 2-1 in the OSC.
  • Go 2-1 in the ODT.
  • Go 10-6 in the OSL.
By following the above-outlined method, anyone can win the OSL with a mere 65.31% winning percentage. Get a solid D average and you’re a champion!

But all this research begs the question: because my easy-to-follow steps were not published until just now, who is going to win the current OSL? The answer lies in the percentage. Only one player in the current OSL has a winning percentage above 65.31%, and that player is Jaedong. So who’s going to win the current OSL? Jaedong. You can’t argue with science.

But technically you could go 35-3ish and still lose the OSL.

Besides, we all know Bisu will win the OSL.

With all due respect, I think you are missing what the people are saying, probably because they aren't elaborating on their thoughts.

Before I get started I would just like to say I agree that it is rude the way that they came out and just directly said that this isn't FE worthy. However, even though I wouldn't have been one of the ones to say it, I couldn't help agreeing with them and I feel compelled now to stick up for what they are saying, not how they are acting.

The high horse that you are speaking of -- I don't feel that it is one that the people are on, I feel that it is one that TL is on. When Final Edits came out I was amazed at the amount of time and effort that came with it. Haji gave us a great analysis on why he thought Lecaf should win, you wrote a fantastic article about stork, FakeSteve seemed to sober up his constant humor and write really good stories of Sea and his clutch engage. And none of this even includes HonestTea.

HonestTea is one of the most gifted writers that I have ever read on TL, he has an ability to keep you reading with a way that no other person does. It is incredible that I find myself so infatuated and glued to the screen when reading his articles. Its just some words about a computer game, right? Not when he writes it...

Moreover, Etter has offered far better explanations and analysis. I realize that he was just being sarcastic and trying to be funny, which in someways was accomplished. However, he has spoiled all of us, all of the FE writers have spoiled us, in ways that lead us desiring the fascinating articles that you have come to provide us with.

So hopefully everyone in the thread should be sorry for the way the presented their thoughts, but not for what they are thinking. TeamLiquid does hold itself to a higher standard than every other english starcraft site. The goal of Final Edits, or what I thought the goal was by reading hot_bids words --

Enjoy the read, and maybe there will be a few "[R]English Translation" threads showing up at Pgr21 or FighterForum in the near future.

Well I must say bErAtEd, that was a fantastic post.

You're right, the reason I went off like that was because of how it was being said, and who was saying it. We all know what FE articles are meant to be, and it's not like I expect people to praise DJ for this article in the same way that they should for one of his carefully constructed Power Ranks, or in depth battle reports or previews, or one of his own past FE articles. However, when a 33 post shmuck who's done dick all thinks he can get away with dismissing a contribution from ANYONE with a derogatory one liner, much less a contributor the level of DJ, it gets me right pissed off.

So while I agree entirely with what you've written there I would still hesitate to defend the comments, as much due to who said them as how they were said, that were made in this thread. This article was made just for fun, and I am not of the personality to simply ignore and diminish asshats the way that Hotbid so elegantly does.

Berated, there are plenty of humor articles featured prominently on ESPN.com about any sport you can think of. There are joke columns and comics and everything. This is not a news piece. This is a humor article. We've seen photoshops of progamers heads onto the bodies of women, stork in a dinosaur outfit, and Xellos dressing up like a girl. You're saying an article that sarcastically points out just how astronomically difficult it'd be to win an OSL, and does it through humor, is "lowering our standards?"

Frankly, FE is up to the writers and editors. We're looking for fun, interesting articles that are written well and present something new. We're not writing to gain approval for readers. If writers wrote this way, there'd be no passion and every article would be summarizing Boxer's accomplishments or about how manly Reach is. You write when you're inspired about want you want. Usually you guys like reading it, sometimes you don't. That's what editorials are, except they all present a point of view and bring something new to the table. This article did that.

This article was the perfect length, was written well, and had great tone, humor, and even some analysis. Haji and I can approve FE articles. I approved this one. So I don't know where everyone is saying "is this worth an FE article" because if it's on that little bar with the "NEW!" next to it and in the archive, it's an FE article.

Sorry if this doesn't meet the standards that you have for Etter or for FE, but we're not writing to meet the standards in your head anyway. If you disagree with my decision to make this an FE, that'll just be a burden I'll bear.

Have any of the people who are bitching about the article actually read anything on ESPN's Page 2 (such as this article) which is what influenced TL's FE?

It's my fault, Dknight. I should have approached the serious, serious subject of a computer game with the somber, humble tone that it so richly deserves.

Don't cry for me, Argentina. The truth is... I never left you.

P.S. That Page 2 article was hilarious.

P.P.S. The article garnered 160 comments. They are priceless. Some choice picks:

"As for the article, the only use I have for it is to print it and wipe my #### with it. Page 2 is where the hack journalists congregate... all the guys that got degrees with a C- average."

"WHO IS THE MORON THAT WROTE THIS PIECE... ESPN NEEDS TO SERIOUSLY RE-EVALUATE WHO IT IS THEY HAVE WRITING FOR THEM..."

"Who wrote this wahoopunk? Was just curious so I knew not to read any of his writings again. Tasteless and not funny. Even if you have a sense of humor, it wasn't entertaining."

"wow.. I never knew Espn hired writers from the Stanford, Connecticut middle school. I just got dumber while wasting my time reading this page."

I think this is in the same group of mathetmatic methods as extrapolation. Let's say a movie earns 10 million a week due to ticket sales for the first 3 weeks. Does this mean that in 30 weeks they will earn 300 000 million dollars? Not at all.

Similarly, just using bare-minimum numbers doesn't prove anything. Achieving those numbers with confidence in and of itself is a feat. If it were that easy, then EVERYONE would advance to the OSL, and that would defeat its own principle because there must always be a winner and a loser.

I know your article wasn't serious, and it was pretty funny, but it was pushing the envelope a bit TOO far.

Written well though, gj n_n

@ hot_bid

I don't want this to turn into an argument, nor did I have any intention when I wrote what I did. I feel that you are getting defensive and I just want to let you know that I am not attacking you, Final Edits, or even Etter. I know that Final Edits was your creation and I, as much as anyone, am fully appreciative of the work you and the rest of the writers have done. This is definitely one of the coolest features in all of the starcraft world.

I know that the decisions are entirely up to you and whoever else is monitoring all this. I trust your judgment, as every FE has been a very nice read and some even worth reading more than once. But to say that you aren't writing for us, and I sincerely mean this, is utter bullshit. How much time did you spend writing Ceremony by Ceremony or A Tale of 2 S class. Did you write both of those up just because you were bored and had nothing to do? Or did you write them up because you strongly felt that you had something to offer to the community in a way that was unique? Both were amazing articles that took something that was already well known and offered it in a way that was spectacular. If you would have received 0 feed back would you still be writing? I know that I do not know your thought process, but I would have to think not.

You and DKnight both point out Page 2 and what is brings to the table. Some people may not know what you are talking about but I am a religious page 2 reader and try to keep up with the Sports Guy World and the AM Jump as well as the rest of the articles that are offered. Page 2 is one of the greatest contributions to sports, and I honestly mean that. If final edits was the mirror image of Page 2 I would have absolutely no problem with that. Even with this in mind, it is still acceptable, don't you think, to give some constructive criticism. I know that it was not offered in that fashion here, but I hope that that is what they were aiming to do. If you read the comment section of Page 2 those people are a lot harsher than many of the people who commented here. I especially feel sorry for the guy who has done the recent am jumps, they tear the shit out of him.

In his book, We The Media, Dan Gilmore continually points out that the feedback that he has received through his online blog has tremendously aided in his advancement as a writer. Don't take the comments as negative and as an attack, take them as a building block so that you can become a better writer, because whether or not you are writing for yourself or for the audience, I think all of you strive to be better than you previously were. Even if it is only for writing short articles for a serious subject like computer games.

It's my fault, Dknight. I should have approached the serious, serious subject of a computer game with the somber, humble tone that it so richly deserves.

Sir DJEtter, your writing was art. As I said, I will drink to it heavily for it is of greatness! ^__^ But yeah, I was actually trying to defend you with that Page 2 link. I blame the lateness for my lack of clarity.

Everyone just needs to lighten up. In the end, we're talking about a game here. Can you imagine, on a Tuesday morning, asking your coworker, "Man, does Tom Brady through anything BUT interceptions?" and having him say, "Listen, Tom Brady finished last year with the second-least number of interceptions in the NFL, and bringing up his interception count after a single bad game is deceptive and in no way amusing"? That's not how normal people act.

I don't think your constructive criticism idea has any relevance to this situation berated.

Firstly, none of the criticism was constructive.

Secondly, this wasn't DJ's attempt at besting War and Peace. It's a short article that he wrote in his spare time, for fun, on a website that doesn't repay him with anything but smartass comments and a hot stone massauge from me each saturday night, to amuse himself and the people of this forum.

While I agree, as I previously said, that my outburst was a bit over the top, your deconstruction of a simple humour piece is out of place as well.

And this is where I guess we all just agree to disagree. I never thought etter should try to best War and Peace. All of you keep reiterating that its a humorous article as if I'm not aware. So I guess etter is right in that in that we should just drop it

Sorry for derailing your thread, thanks for the article Etter.

I don't mean to have a stick up my ass about this dude, but even if we couldn't fall back on the fact that it's a humourous article, all the negative feedback sucked ass and had no constructive value. So even if it was a serious article, your points still wouldn't fly.

I don't think this is so much about agreeing to disagree as it is about you standing up for people that don't deserve it.

I mean, this guy?

STOP! HAMMER TIME.

It goes without saying that there are two sides to every written piece - the writer/editor and the reader.

I think Hot_Bid has good points and I also think Berated has good points to make. I am especially thankful for Berated, because as a reader, he took the extra step of articulating his thoughts and presenting his opinion in a sensible manner.

This is good discussion. But it can be carried out through PM, or in a seperate thread in the Website Feedback forum.

The comments section for this article should be left for those who want to appreciate the brilliance of Etter's can't-fail plan.

Agreed?

Makes a lot of sense, because if you think about... it would be easy to win for a progamer who is in a really good moment and is playing on steroids...

Wi 07 Shinhan Bank Season 3 - sAviOr > NaDa (TeamLiquid Article)
Su 07 Daum - GGPlay > Iris (TeamLiquid Article)

as you can see it doesnt seem like the MSL which has like the same players winnin over it and over it again...

So how easy is it to win an MSL DJetterStyle?

(Altho I have a guess about how you might feel by now when seeing me addressing DJ's articles...)

But in all objectivity it seems to me people lack DJ going any further with the data. If we strip down the dressing we see one thing being said: "To win an OSL you need an overall theoretical minimum of 65.31% winning percentage from qualifiers to the trophy."

Now the thought of this is rather interesting, and I'm sure even tho lots of people figured this out back in 2001 or so, it has probably never been addressed so directly. But had DJ chosen to play around some with this quite intriguing number, like say - analyzing player's records and why some of them are champions altho their ratios don't fit, and others have brilliant ratios but choke - I'm sure most people would have been satisfied.

Of course, it is most probable that DJ has formulated his article in this way precisely to leave all the thought-process to the readers, and generate discussion... But then you should understand that as well, HB, - and also understand that some people are just bound to "not get it".

To summarize, the article's content is something one would see a thread in the Tournament section created about - sparking a discussion, but leaving it to the forum visitors to go beyond the raw data. It is this fundamental difference as compared to the other FE articles that leaves the sense of "lacking something" in most of the critics, I'm sure.

Oh, and in-before anything else: I'm not defending ZergZoul, this is just an analysis of the situation.

It's a fun article meant to be a joke. Clearly it's ridiculously hard to win an OSL and boiling it down to purely 65% win rate, not to mention to use that to determine the next OSL winner and discounting factors like maps, strength of players, randomness of groups, matchup weaknesses, format, group selection, pressure play, amount of leagues the player is in, etc... is ridiculous.

I thought this was assumed. It'll truly fly over some peoples' heads, but whatever. Think of it more as an article aimed at those who would laugh at the absurdity of the claims Etter makes here.

In no way is he actually making any real points or wanting to spark discussion about using %s and winrates to determine a winner or strongest player.

That may be, but on a related note, it's more entertaining than your face.

Furthermore, I would have been dumb enough to respond to you and mynock 6 months ago. Though I'm still dumb enough to have a debate with berated, completely ruining the thread (sorry DJ ), and escalating what was nothing but a punchline under the careful watch of HotBid, at least I'm improving.

In closing, it is now official that it takes more cunning tactics to bait ManaBlue. The hunt for the right flavour is on!

For the first 20 lines of the articles i thought you wrote this after a saturday out with friends ... with too many drinks.

I was wrong, you gave us a taste of authentic SCIENCE.

Nevertheless i don't think Jaedong is going to win ... and i can PROVE you winning the OSL can be even easier than that:

* Being already in Korea (South).
* No need to play Courage League.
* No need to play PSL
* No need to play OSC because you are already seed for OSL
* No need to play ODT because you are already seed for OSL
* Go 10-1 / 11-0 / 9-2 in the OSL

Guess who? 3 man can do this!

Too bad two are probably going to be eliminated in the first round. :0

Also it's more like 2-1, 2-1, 3-2, 3-2... so 10-5. Gee... this seems oddly reminiscent of GGPlay (barring the first round), except he actually had to qualify.

How about we make it 10-6? What's wrong with people's elementary math nowadays?

I want to see someone lose 11 games to go to the OSL.

That would mean

Loses 3 games in OSL Semis (Up 2-0, 3 chances for 1st or 2nd seed)
Loses 3 games in OSL 3rd place game (Up 2-0, 3 chances for 3rd seed)
Loses 3 games in OSC Playoff Finals (Up 2-0, 3 chances for 4th seed)
Loses Winners Final in ODT
Loses Losers Final in ODT

MAXIMUM PAIN

But all this research begs the question: because my easy-to-follow steps were not published until just now, who is going to win the current OSL? The answer lies in the percentage. Only one player in the current OSL has a winning percentage above 65.31%, and that player is Jaedong. So who’s going to win the current OSL? Jaedong. You can’t argue with science.

I believe math would be a better term, but okay =p.

In this case, yes. But 'You can't argue with science' is just a universal statement whether you're talking about math, physics or biology ;-)

The current MSL format is slightly easier to win:

  • Go to Korea (South)
  • Go 12-6 in the Courage League.
  • Go 6-3 in the PSL.
  • Go 2-1 in the Survivor Tournament.
  • Go 13-8 in the MSL.
You would come out with a 64.71% win record, a little more than half a percent less than the OSL

I would just like to bump this article on the eve of the Stork - Jaedong OSL finals.

This thread is a monument to the massive talent and intellect that is DJEtterStyle.

Should Jaedong win tomorrow (and according to all statistical analysis he should) then Etter stands atop the progaming analysis ladder with the biggest balls of them all.

If Jaedong wins .....

I'm at a loss of words just thinking of that possibility and what it might do to Etter's ego.

If Jaedong wins, I'm going to change my signature to "My testicles are larger than yours, and they're rarely blue."

Plus, c'mon, the games are on my birthday. How could Jaedong not win?

The only thing that could make this a greater victory for Etter is if he has stressed Stork's ability to choke under pressure before and implied it would happen this time.

If he has, fuck it. Etter predict my share choices, please D:

It felt like Jaedong was playing against P . ZvT style with the whole ling/lurk armies lol

I thought Stork deserved it, after watching game 1 I thought holly cow Stork is going to 3-0 Jaedong so bad; because of jaedong's desperate hydra tech it seemed like he was tryin to pull off a savior and looked horrible but somehow he bent stork over and fucked him in the ass and hatched a zergling inside of him XD!

[R]Etter, I have been kind of waiting for a new thread from you expressing how it feels to predict something like this in such a deep analysis and fine way. Maybe a thread to brag about how smart you are or anything. What was your feelings when Stork was saying GG in the 4th game I dunno man something like that!

Pfft, Jaedong was fated to be a Royal Roader from the day he was born.

Though I was a little worried when Bisu was still in the running.

I know this is a little late, but...

what if a player keeps on going through the tiebreaker for days on end? If he goes 1-2 in the group round, then 2786-2784 in the tiebreakers, then 2-1, 3-2, 3-2 respectively, you only need to win 50.03% of your games. Winning the OSL made easier!

The current MSL format is slightly easier to win:

  • Go to Korea (South)
  • Go 12-6 in the Courage League.
  • Go 6-3 in the PSL.
  • Go 2-1 in the Survivor Tournament.
  • Go 13-8 in the MSL.
You would come out with a 64.71% win record, a little more than half a percent less than the OSL

uhm iono if u rigged the percentage, but jaedong's record is currently 64.71%... he must be the next bonjwa hahaha.

I would just like to point out that Jaedong did in fact win the next MSL (GOMTV MSL Season 4).
