TY is the glorious winner of https://tl.net/forum/sc2-tournaments/550360-alpha-pro-series-rogue-classic-ty-and-zest-500

3-1 over Zest, 4-2 over Classic. Winner interview recap:

- Zerg OP
- Serral is scary but TY has many builds and he thinks the match is 50-50
- Casting is helping him learn more about other players
- Mech sucks against Protoss

Great interview recap. Happy to hear the thing about casting, maybe that'll help him get a better idea of the "character" of particular opponents. Like, herO is the dirtiest of the dirty and you should game plan accordingly.

Really great to see him beat two top toss players before Code S too. His early game looked sharp. Plus the incoming balance patch should improve things even further.

Meh, couldn't do it in the end. Zerg late game being super hard aside I think a few less mistakes and he wins 3-0 tho. Game 1 he got over aggressive for some reason and threw away his army lead instead of going late in a good spot. And game 3 his push was really close to working too.

G1: building his 4th on location cost him, he ended up having to float his main down there. I don't know if this made him feel like he had to keep pushing after killing the zerg 4th and even canceling the 5th but, yeah, that backfired heavily. Perhaps he didn't see the ultra tech? That said, loved that classic TY style.

G3: Yeah that was actually super close. I wonder how the hell nobody can ever prevent Serral from scouting them. If he doesn't see that stim research and gets spines and more queens that would have tipped the scales.

G4: Why skyterran? :| After that early game surely the best option is to put on the aggression. He's already on three orbitals and ahead in workers, but he puts down a couple of extra starports and goes for mass vikings. I don't get it.. And that armory placement... But either way this was a crap game, it's incredible that they actually made BL/Infestor worse by adding in SH/Nydus.

Btw who was it talking to TY between the games? It looked a bit like his English teacher.

Silver lining: now he can go practice TvP.

I think that was someone from the old KT coaching staff, but not sure.

Yeah game 4 was disappointing that he didn't try to play his mech more straight-up. Like yeah speed banshees are nice against swarm hosts but he took so much damage anyway. I figure keeping up the harass (with hellions and libs) and then going for 1 big push would have been stronger. Like, he almost outright killed Serral with the unexpected blue flame opening. And then because of his own follow-up he was stuck on his side of the map for the rest of the game. Not great.

He better pour his heart and soul into Code S and the Super Tournament, he's gotta get to Blizzcon to get his revenge against Serral

Also other silver lining is that the patch hits before his GSL group, maybe he can bring something cool. But just him having an easy time advancing would be okay, even without cool new builds

Yeah that's exactly what I thought regarding game 4. In fact, amen to everything you wrote, couldn't agree more.

Took care of business against Neeb nicely. Kind of expected, but I'm not sure what Serral's team was thinking sending out Neeb against TY on the best TvP map.

Either way now he can focus on GSL, he's got some time to work with.

How well does he have to do this GSL season to have a shot at Blizzcon?

Despite his losses to Serral he’s looked in really good shape lately, definitely in better form since he started out casting.

I like his bromance with Special, we need more Terrans from Korea at Blizzcon and stylistically and strategical I just love his play and approach to the game so I really hope he makes it.

Pretty much finals or bust because there is still a Super Tournament which I imagine his competition will do well in. Or at least better than him because ST is historically terrible for TY.

He analysed his games against Serral on stream yesterday btw.

For New Repugnancy he said it hurt his pride he lost because Serral had such a bad opening. He actually considered a variety of options. First thing he said was he was going back and forth on his follow-up at the start and decided to do hellbats instead of BCs at the time. Looking at the VOD though he said he should have gone BC because he forced so many lings and Serral couldn't really have dealt with that. He also felt that maybe he should have done a more frontal push later in the game instead of going for the 4th/5th base, because that gave Serral too much time to get out ultras which turned the game around. And finally he also said that he wasn't properly on top of scouting Serral's tech, if he'd known hive and ultras were coming he said he'd have played differently.

For Acropolis, his analysis was that after the start with the proxy rax, which SpeCial recommended to him, he could have done anything to win and the game was over. He also said that Serral at any point in the series played exactly like TY wanted and expected him to, he just played better than TY so he won the series On Thunderbird he said he had his most regrettable loss. He was super confident in his build and thought it was really, really strong and would work for sure. Looking at the fight he said he wasn't sure how he lost the fight but he should have won the game with his push and afterwards it was just over.

His analysis of King's Cove was a huge rant about nydus/swarm host. It ruined his entire game plan, kept him way too busy, was super stressful and just impossible to deal with. And he said if Serral ever gets ahead he doesn't even give you a 0.000000000001% chance to make a comeback.

Also as a side note for the New Repugnancy game, there was that time he let lings into his base that got a full scout and everyone got really confused. He explained the reason the lings got in was that he was changing his sound settings because he couldn't hear the reaper grenades he threw at Serral's base. Next time just pause you goof.

Pretty interesting, I wish I caught more of TY live than I do, perhaps I should sub so I can actually catch his VODs

I love hearing such insight though, TY is one of the smarter players about, both with how he plays and how he articulates it.

Playing Serral seems such a daunting prospect, especially if you know as much about the game as TY does. You have to bring a good plan, you have to execute your plan well, you have to alter your plan on the fly if things shift, and you can still lose anyway.

It’s to my mind the most formidable aspect of Serral, that he doesn’t really often lose games that he is appreciably ahead in. It’s not as sexy as stellar micro or mechanics, but you see its power over extended periods of time.

Serral can still win from behind, if a game is even you tend to favour him, and if he’s actually ahead he tends not to throw leads.

Mentally I imagine that’s pretty tough when you’re up against him, as TY alluded to there in various ways. Thanks for the summary!

Excellent info. Thanks a bunch.

Re game 4: I have no idea how his gameplan was ruined by SH/Nydus, what was he expecting? It's not like it's the first time he's played against it, and it's pretty much standard on king's cove. It's definitely OP, but he already knew that.

Re sound settings: just lol

Well the plan was to do a bunch of damage with the speed banshees and be active on Serral's side of the map. Then go into late game ahead, transition to bio and "initiate nuclear warfare". But the nydus play turned out much more problematic than he figured I guess. Any time he killed a nydus there were already 2 more so the banshees never did anything except defense.

TY actually said he feels he heard the nydus sound about a million times that game and now has PTSD from it.

Well here we go... The starcraft gods will give TY a Ro8 against Keen if he can win the group, that's as close to a safe thing that he can get.

All fingers crossed.

I never used to worry about TY no matter how hard his groups were because I was always sure he'd bring his A-game and bust out new builds for GSL. These days I don't have that confidence anymore. Even though his status as top 2 Terran never really changed I just have a lot more doubts.

Well he made it to the Ro8. He beat herO. But I'm not a fan of how he loses every match he plays against Trap. He used to never lose to him by just playing more solid. His cheesy style he's been playing since last year doesn't really get him through those matches. Their series record has actually gone from 14-4 in favor of TY to 16-12 in favor of TY ever since the proxy meta kicked in.

Now he's got a bit of time to figure out builds he can beat Dark with. It's been a long time since he's done it. Dark looked vulnerable late game on Wednesday but I don't think it'll happen again.

Also I suppose right now if Classic can't go to Blizzcon TY would be in, that's something.

Dark seemed shakier than he's ever been in years in ZvT, TY might have a chanche this time.

I doubt he'll look that weak in the Ro8.
