When people look back on (Z)MVPDongRaeGu in Wings of Liberty, they will remember him as one of the best Zerg players of his time, with multiple championship wins that span over three continents. They will remember him as a strategic player, one who preferred flanks, counter attacks and multi-prong aggressions rather than turtling behind a deathball. They will remember him for his solid mechanics, his 600+ APM and his perseverance when the odds looked bleak and the future, grim. But most of all, people will remember that he was a captivating player, a fan favorite, a starcraft-rock-star. Who could forget DRG's outrageous ceremony against his bestfriend, (P)Genius, at the GSL Finals? Who could dismiss his ability to electrify a live crowd, that numbered in the thousands, using lines like "good shit!" or "EZPZ?" Who could overlook the time he crawled his way back from the lower bracket to finally beat his rival (T)MarineKing in the finals of the Spring Arena. Years from now when people look back, they will remember DongRaeGu as a player that kept them watching.

DongRaeGu came to prominence in early 2011. Even before he joined a professional team, DRG was already making a name for himself by conquering the upper echelon of the Korean ladder. After entering the major leagues, he quickly gained notoriety through his performance in the GSTL, where he held a stunning record of 13:2 and single-handedly tipped the ZvT winrate to be in Zerg's favor. As he got better, he started dominating the singles leagues as well, earning third place at MLG Providence and the grand prize at IEM New York. The golden age of DongRaeGu began in 2012 when he started taking only first or second places in every tournament he entered. At the peak of his career, DongRaeGu was virtually unbeatable and was regarded by many as the de facto best player in the world. His reign lasted until July of that year when he was overthrown by (P)SKMC and (Z)FXOLeenock in the semi-finals of the GSL and GSTL, respectively. Even after his period of dominance, DongRaeGu remained a relevant player for the rest of Wings of Liberty's history. He became an OSL finalist by the end of 2012 and began the following year by making it to the finals of Iron Squid. By the transition to Heart of the Swarm, DongRaeGu has been in Code S of the GSL for a total of 9 consecutive times.

A look back at DongRaeGu's career in the twilight hours of Wings reveal that he was invaluable to the game on multiple levels. First, he was an innovative player who kept the meta-game from being stagnant. In 2011, DRG popularized strategies such as the 8-minute-roach-rush against hellion expand and showed people how to use ultralisk/banelings against bio/tank. In 2012, he was the first to use 6 Queens to gain map control on a professional level at the MLG Summer Championship. He later revitalized mutalisk-play, a strategy long thought to be obsolete, during a time when spectators were fed up with infestor/broodlords. More recently, DRG developed the Nydus-Worm-Queen-Roach-gas-denial strategy against Terran mech, a unqiue opening designed to stifle the opponent's army production in the mid-game.

Secondly, he was a dynamic player with a play style that never failed to draw the attention of spectators. In particular, his mutalisk control was known to be world-class throughout the history of 'Liberty. DongRaeGu's APM-intensive style, which focuses on aggression, positioning and multitasking, is difficult to master and hard to imitate. His intricate use of mutalisk/zergling/baneling remains a crowd pleaser to this day.

Finally, he was a charismatic and likable player, one who could keep fans loyal and audiences engaged, both from inside and outside of gameplay. What sets him apart from other high earning pro-gamers was his charm. From his Zergling dance to his snappy one liners, DongRaeGu kept things fun and made himself relatable. Gaining people's attention and getting them to talk seemed natural to him. Whether it was through copious amount of fan-interactions, victory ceremonies, or feeding the audience pizza, DRG did it all with stride.

DongRaeGu is a "King of Wings" because he was more than just a great player, he was a memorable one who displayed dominance over much the game's timeline, who enjoyed a brief period of supremacy, who was entertaining enough to keep fans thrilled and inventive enough to keep the audience happy. He was everything Wings of Liberty needed in a competitive player. He was a star, shining.

there's going to be a GSL grand finals at the end of the year,
after Code S season 5.
It'll be like Blizzard Cup last year.

I'm sure DRG will be invited.

So I'm pretty sure the GSL world championship will be just like Blizzard Cup last year.
Here's hoping to see DRG ready for another finals.

I am really confused. DRG just doesn't seem to have his heart and mind focused on SC2 like he did last year. I guess everyones priorities change though. His manager really should do a better job with schedules for matches and mental motivation etc.

Don't say that.
His heart is definitely there.
He does seem burnt out though.
And yes, I would like to see the managers helping him more with these things, such as scheduling.

How long do we say he is burned out for though and needs a rest? I remember a few months ago we said the same thing, he had a rest no tournaments for AGES and then came back the same way with just a few sparks of brightness. Maybe this is the thing though, other players are catching up and DRG just may not be adapting to the game changes like others.

DRG has always been the fast APM macro player, definately the fastest zerg i have seen maybe Losira is on par but the current meta of infestor BL doesn't cater to the fast player does it? Muta is out of style and thats how DRG did things, harrassing and amazing speed with fast units that got him edges in games so he could close it out with his superior macro. Infestors slow the game down, make it easy for people who arn't as gifted mechanically/speed wise but have the control and tactics to make things work. DRG always seemed impatiant to me. His personality defined his style, it was speed and messy and wanted to get things done ASAP so he could get out of there...

I do agree with a lot of things you're saying. But to be fair, being basically THE only zerg in the OSL and making it all the way to the finals was quite a remarkable accomplishment. That and crushing Mvp and Creator in the round of 32, which should give us clause to allowing DRG the benefit of the doubt for what happened in GSL this week.

He was burnt out, he came back crushing, then burnt out again... Call him an inconsistent player, but he's by no means a declining one.

I do worry about his state of mind a lot. For a player that has made a name for himself showing superb mental strength in the Blizzard Cup last year, it is concerning how often emotions got the better of him this year. I hope he's able to work through whatever is going on in his life.

I think he's still a great player, but not as hungry as he was before. So far in 2012 he earned $128,748 in prize money alone... not counting endorsements, team salary, etc. The DRG from 2012 wasn't earning six figures and was still hungry to make a big name for himself. Its harder to stay at the top sometimes than reach the top, particularly when your style gets picked apart and you have a target on your back. I wouldn't worry, he has been inconsistent but I'm sure he will return to top form.
