Go back to school and learn some of these basic, basic concepts. It makes sense.
What you are saying here makes absolutely no sense. No one is forcing him to coach.

he has heard of it and even talks about it on SOTG. He said he tried using it and it is a very interesting build but has a few flaws that need to be worked out first.

I was corrected. Sorry.

The point of the high cost is so that he doesn't have thousands of people lining up for lessons. He still gets enough market with 150-300 dollars that he can coach a few hours here and there when he's bored.

I understand that, it's not relevant to my post though.

he doesn't like coaching but he's willing to do it if people pay him enough to
does that make sense?

it was 150 at first. He just recently upped it by double. He is explaining why Idra charges so much and cited where Idra has said it. It is 300 as of today, was 150 before.

And no one is preventing him from earning a casual 300$ either. It just happens that this amount of money is enough for him to be willing to sacrifice his time, whilst maintaining a sufficient level of demand.
He is a celebrity after all. No one is forcing famous people to attend events and do sidejobs- I guess Al Gore is not neccessarily enthusiastic about talking global warming each and every time. Though when offered tens of thousands of dollars for doing so, he cannot be blamed for taking it. Same for advertisement. The list is endless really.
Edit: typos.

Has he explicitly said that he hates coaching? I don't ever remember him saying so. I know on SotG he has said he values his time, but I wouldn't take that as him inferring he hates it.
On a side note, I always felt that $150 was pretty cheap given the amount of knowledge you can obtain from picking at his brain for an hour. $300 is pretty steep, but undoubtedly worth it for me.

Why is this so hard to understand? When human beings have agency and are incentivized enough, they will do things that they may find unpleasant or not enjoyable. Coaching is working for Idra, not a hobby that he finds deep satisfaction in. He charges $300 because that is the hourly wage that he requires to engage in an activity he does not particularly enjoy. Wow.

You guys are assuming too much about IdrA hating coaching. He might hate it, and he might not, but there is no evidence to make conclusion. I simply view it as him highly valuing practice time.

Has he ever actually said that he hates it? It seems like a silly discussion to be having.

Thank you. I was wondering where people were getting this idea. And I'm obviously trusting your knowledge of things IdrA says.
He definitely doesn't coach much. I've had a pending lesson on GC forever now. But I don't think he hates it, just has other things to do.

yeh wtf he never said he hated it, its more a matter of time then whether he likes it or not, as he said... hes got a shitload of tournaments coming up. Im assuming unless u wanna pay more for his time, then he'd rather spend it practicing or something more important
|
it's all about opportunity cost for idra. i highly doubt he actually dislikes coaching; if anything, it's just on a lower tier of importance. if he spends time coaching, he isn't doing other things he prioritizes, which is probably tournament preparation. so as to not be burdened by an overwhelming influx of requests for coaching, he increased the price to make it prohibitive: if you *really* want to bask in idra's celebrity glow and learn from the gracken himself, you're going to have to make it worth the time that he isn't spending practicing or working on his numerous other projects. he probably prefers to practice and figure out new things within the game than coach others, since winning tournaments is the highest priority, and he's always got events to prepare for. yet he offers the opportunity for coaching in the first place because it's a profitable diversion he can partake at his own volition. it's also a great way to interact with his fans who have money to burn. remember that it was originally 150$, yet he still had too many requests, so he made it even more prohibitive as he knew that people would still pay that much because of his celebrity status within the starcraft community. ultimately idra's coaching policy is a win / win for everyone: he gets to do it on his own time for some extra cash and for the occasional diversion from serious practice, while a select lucky few of us get to be taught by the gracken himself if we are serious enough about it. DA DA!!!!

damn... if i won the lottery i would get idrA lessons like once a week or something :D. Also I already switched to zerg because of this (and because i like the zerg mechanics/units)... My heart keeps telling me not to switch to zerg... but... can' resist... I don't think idrA is a responsible rolemodel. He makes zerg look like an attractive race. Many young people switch to zerg and get theirs lives ruined, breaking numerous keyboards, yelling really loud and waking up neighbours, QQing on the forums, use drugs to relieve the pain of constant loosing (doesn't happen with other races...) and their whole lifes go to shit. Is it really worth it? Know your limit idrA... Do you want to be responsible for this? + Show Spoiler +For people who are even stupider than i am: Im not entierly serious here

I had previous reserved 2 hours at 150/hour, but that was before the price hike. I'm a little bit hesitant to sign up now. I understand why he did it, but I'm a little sad that I'm going to have to bow out.
