To ensure this thread won't be closed, you must adhere to several a number of simple rules;
  • Please use spoilers when quoting a post with pictures and/or videos.
  • When posting large quantities of media (pictures or videos), please begin spoilering after the first piece. Grouping related videos in the same spoilers & labeling is recommended.
  • No reposting of old material unless justified
  • Posting any material with little or no relevent discussion accompanying it
  • No passion-induced flaming of each other because 'x said y sucked' etc.
  • Keep the expression hate of music individuals/groups to a minimal level
  • No 'pagetopping' in any form whatsoever, as it constitutes spam equal to posts similar to 'first'.
  • No vulgar fan fics or wet dream stories. It is creepy, weird, and it dehumanizes the people who you are here to celebrate/discuss.
  • Normal posting standards that you find throughout the rest of the site still apply and will be enforced more strictly from here forward (2012/03/11)

Due to the poor nature of this thread in the past, temporary two-day bans will occur more than often if people slip up.

@Craton: I'm glad he reposted that, I've never seen it before and it was amusing.

Are they really saying what it sounds like?

Composer Choi Hee Jin, who was previously arrested for attempted blackmail, has received a two-year prison sentence for her crimes.

The Seoul Central District Court ruled on the morning of December 14th that Choi Hee Jin defamed Tae Jin Ah and Eru by spreading false rumors, and attempted to extort money from them.

Prosecutors stated, “Choi Hee Jin requested money for an abortion after lying about her pregnancy. The Cho family has been largely affected by this case.” Although prosecutors previously asked for a five-year sentence, the court came to a final judgment on two years instead, due to a repentant letter Choi wrote explaining her regret in her actions, and how she is reflecting on her behavior.

Meanwhile, prison time. I'm not sure if I remember this [when it originally happened]. Isn't this blackmail, not extortion, though?

Afaik, she had real hardcore issues beyond her control which took a toll on her career and personal life, effecting her mentality, so i don't think sending her to prison was the right thing imo, maybe some counciling. But then again, korean people handle these problems by opting for ridiculously high jail sentences, at least the persecutors do.

Assuming sound mentality, two years for extortion/blackmail isn't particularly unreasonable. It seems about the same as what you'd get in the U.S. Maybe she should be spending the time in a mental hospital, but this doesn't seem like a case of a "ridiculously high prison sentence."

I don't know, maybe I am missing something. Just seemed something that could have been written differently.

I'm not too sure about this but from what I've seen while I was living in Korea it doesn't really seem to have a developed system for things like psychologists, counseling, and therapy. Or practically any treatment for stuff like depression. At least schools in America had guidance counselors and resources for support. But in Korea besides your homeroom teacher there really isn't anyone. So its why I'm not surprised that she was just sent to prison. I'm pretty sure majority of people in Korea don't even consider depression as some sort of illness.

But the good thing is that people seem to be more aware about it. There has been lots of celebrity suicide cases lately with lots of mock suicides by people after. And the prevalance of depression is always high with students with how much emphasis is placed on education.

look through tlpd and you can probably list over 10 k-pop references in names alone.
