She's been doing amazing covers, duets and releasing very good songs (minus marshmellow) since 2008 and has only been getting real recognition recently.
I don't know who you've been talking to or where you've been going but as I understand "underrated" means not getting attention in the news, shows, publicity and fans. IU has had lots of attention given to her, she's in a show, she's almost always talked about, and she has tons of fans-She's all over the place. Are you sure you don't just spend too much time reading fangirl comments and shit? Heck, even fangirls talk about IU.

He just meant underrated in vocal talent. She was known for her covers from way back but she started getting really popular recently not because of her vocal talent but her looks.

shes really pretty and criminally underrated tbh.
More like overrated as !@#$. I can't believe someone like her is even considered an idol. Marshmellow was a shitty attempt to go mainstream, and suprisingly enough, it worked.

Bad kpop history. Marshmallow didn't work. Nagging worked.

You mean marshmallow failed in the eyes of the korean netizens or foreigners?

no one really cared about marshmallow, it was annoying. nagging was really good imo.
if youre gonna talk about "foreigners", then obv. she was fucking 16, everyone wanted a piece of jailbait.in korea, there was so many better jailbaits like ji yeon to splurg over.

lol it's funny because that applies to pretty much all kpop with the rarest of exceptions.
all of IU's collabs are so good. she should just be a collab artist for the next year or so, kind of like what m-flo did with the "m-flo loves ____" series

Marshmallow failed actually. She wasn't recognized at all with it. To be honest you could even say it worked with foreigners just because of how outrageous the song was. In the korean netizen's eyes it was just some annoying song. With what top said she started getting really popular with Nagging and appearing on the show Heroes.
Nagging was pretty good imo. But it seems more like a desperate attempt to leech fame off other well-known idols (in this case, seulong) so it didnt seem like it would be really successful. And also the song isn't mainstream. Hence, my original comment that i cant believe she is even considered an idol
But then again, songs like oh and hoot are topping K-charts so i guess its not that suprising.
I don't think she was leeching off of seulong. He would not have been chosen if that was the intention. Seulong is actually fairly unpopular. And what do you mean by the song wasn't mainstream? It won the netizen award. I think thats mainstream enough. She is considered an idol because an idol by definition (in korea) is any celebrity/entertainer who appeals to teenagers and young adults in early twenties. And most of her fans are in that catergory hence idol.

Not intended to be an attack of any kind, btw, but this is exactly what's wrong with the kpop industry right now; looks shouldn't be what sells the music or even what introduces you to the music, but it is.

But isn't that kind of the problem with all mainstream/popular/pop music nowadays? Even looking at the US charts, a lot of the people there suck worse at singing than Kpop idols do; at least kpop bands have 1 or 2 vocals who actually sound good. Taylor swift is inconsistent live at best, Rihanna sucks, etc. There are a few good artists in both industries but a lot of popular artists in both the U.S. and Korea aren't actually all that good.

(Idols are any celebrity that has alot of popularity . The extent of popularity for one to be considered an idol is a subjective matter, so long as its not unrealistic.) < this is what i have believed all this time and still think this is true. Where did you get "idol by definition is any celebrity/entertainer who appeals to teenagers and young adults in early twenties."?
