Now, this might not have been an issue if it didn't affect her commitment to the group. But obviously her business took up too much of her time/energy, and she wasn't able to give 100% to SNSD and SNSD-affiliated activities. And it would only get worse as it expanded and she added branched out into other things. Moreover, her side projects created conflicts with potential business opportunities. Think of a company like J.estina which they worked with before. If they wanted to contract the 9 members to model their product, but Jessica also sells competing products for her own brand, you can see how this would be an issue. Also, if she were to get engaged, that makes her, and therefore the group, less valuable. So they gave her an ultimatum: Either put the group first or yourself first. It sounds like she wouldn't explicitly choose and instead went to NY with her boyfriend, returning a day before their first China fanmeeting hoping that they would just let her just keep doing what she was doing. But the members couldn't let it go on like this, especially with all the big plans they have for the group in the near future, so they had to drop her. In her statement, Jessica clearly does not blame SM, so we shouldn't either. She says they were supportive and that it was the member's decision. | ||

Always thought SNSD could stand to lose a few members, but Jessica surely wasn't one I wanted/expected to go. Eventually, I'm sure this situation will end up more clear. | ||

With that said, I think people are kidding themselves if they think that the other 8 members could really have much leverage against SM if SM applied some real pressure to them. SM essentially removed JYJ from kpop despite them being arguably the most successful and talented boy group ever assembled, and after SM had already devoted so much time and resources to developing them. All SM would have to do to convince the other 8 members to step in line would be to point to the JYJ situation that is still ongoing. They're all under contract and would almost certainly be blacklisted in the kpop industry in Korea, which would be a deathknell for most, if not all, of their careers or at least the level of success they've become used to. As much as super successful celebrities may sometimes struggle against the pressures and burdens of being so famous, they also become accustomed and attached to that lifestyle whether they realize it or not. Without the support of SM, or any other major label who wouldn't want to get on SM's bad side (i.e. likely all of them), they'd likely have to kiss their careers as idols, singers, actresses, tv personalities, etc. goodbye. Most of the members would be completely screwed due to not being talented or popular enough to stand on their own, which could conceivably put more pressure on the other members to keep the group together at all costs (i.e. Yoona and Taeyeon not wanting Hyoyeon and Yuri to be compromised despite likely being able to support solo careers). TTS would certainly want to stay together at all costs since they're becoming a legitimate group on their own after much time and effort. In the end, there would be an overwhelming amount of pressure and incentive to keep the group together, even if it meant turning their backs on just one member who probably isn't as devoted to the group anymore and they may see as able to do just fine on her own. I'm not saying that any of this is what actually happened, but I believe it's very likely and certainly very possible. SM has enormous clout in the Korean entertainment industry and they've already shown they're willing and able to battle and win against even their most successful artists. SNSD would have virtually no leverage as they need SM a lot more than vice-versa, and too many of the members are fully invested and reliant upon their SNSD identity and connection to SM. It's not hard to imagine that if the other 8 members were faced with losing their careers or sticking up for Jessica that they'd very likely choose the former, particularly since Jessica seems fine with her outside ventures and relationship. | ||
