[Interview] Girl's Day "To be sexy while not being racy...it's our problem to solve."

"We focused more showing a more moderated sexiness."

Girl group Girl's Day succeeded in showing off their charms. As they say, their potential has been found and discovered.

With their official 1st full album 'Expectation', 'Are we going to get a 1st place?' the members expectations are slowly approaching reality. Their title song 'Expect Me' has taken 1st spots on important online charts and their music video is getting a fantastic response.

For them in 2010, since their debut they have focused on cute concepts but this is the result of them selecting a sexy concept. Now instead of making cute eye-smiles and adorable poses, they have revealing, see through tops and skinny jeans showing their seductive charms.

"Of course there was pressure. From cute to sexy...it's a 180 degree change. Doing cute concepts for 2.5 years and then suddenly attempting something sexy, it was difficult. Making cute expressions uses different facial muscles than sexy expressions you know." (Minah)

"We tried our best not to be too sexual. It's a difficult task to prevent crossing the line from 'sexy' into 'erotic'." (Sojin)

Their 1st album title song 'Expect Me', with their stages they show off sexiness close to perfection making the male fans fall in love but before their transformation they had to overcome a few obstacles. It's true especially for Hyeri their youngest member who just became an adult and Girl’s Day’s cute eye-smile mascot Minah.

"You can't find any feminine or sexiness inside me at all. The other members all have feminine qualities. But for me I don't know. I'm still trying to find that quality within me. Do you think I could find that on this week's 'Expect Me' stage?" (Hyeri)

"Firstly when I tell the people around me that I'm doing a sexy concept, I get reactions like 'You? Sexy?'. I contemplated and worried a lot. But when I got on stage I think my sexiness did show on stage. I can't give up my eye-smiles though." (Minah)

To break out of a long-standing image, it is hard for fans and the artists to receive and express it. I asked them about what their fan base thinks.

"Our fans probably wanted something more feminine and sexy rather than being cute every time. They cheer for us a lot and I think this concept had more positive reactions than the last one." (Hyeri)

"Just because we're pulling off a sexy image, we're not going to throw away our cute image completely. We can change into being cute, ladylike, and refreshing anytime. Being sexy is just one side of our appearances we can show." (Yura)

In their 'Expect Me' stage they perform a dance that lowers their suspenders focused on the hip line, a leg-spread dance, and etc. Since their debut they have never shown these kinds of unprecedented appearances, people comment positively that it's a refreshing attempt by Girl's Day.

Of course just putting out the 'sexy' card you can get tagged with a 'sexuality controversy' resulting in getting a paltry response from the public. Girl's Day says they chose 'sexiness with restraint' and differentiated themselves from others.

"The suspender choreography is a dance that needs special attention from us. Doing a wave using the suspenders was harder than I thought. It was a part of my body that I never used before so it was quite difficult." (Minah)

"It may look like we're just moving our hips, but our choreographer intentions were different. It's not just swaying back and forth but with subtle movements we show our restrained sexiness. It seems our plan worked!" (Sojin)

After releasing their official 1st album and their title track 'Expect Me' they just started their promotion cycle. With this momentum they mention if they could grab this opportunity and get a 1st place on a music program, that nothing could make them happier. They happily mention they would love a 1st place, but what Girl’s Day really wish for is lasting and steady interest and being recognized for their music.

"Honestly our ultimate dream and goal is to be loved by everyone." (Hyeri)

"As a singer I want to be loved for our singing. We may sound selfish I hope they like our 'songs' more than just liking the songs because they like us." (Minah)

Girl's Day, "Extreme sexy makeover, we were worried of being ignored." (Interview)

Girl's Day has come back with a sexy appearance.

Since their debut in 2010 with 'Girl's Day Party #1', on March 14th they held their comeback since 2 years and 8 months with their first full-length album 'Expectation'. They are planning to promote for around 6 weeks.

Inside their new album they have 6 new songs including their 6 title tracks, in total 14 tracks. Specially one of the included songs 'Girl's Day World' and 'I Don't Mind' the members participated in the producing of the writing/composing.

"I'm so happy we're releasing our first full album. For the fans who waited this long, we did our best preparing. I thought I wouldn't feel the difference from a mini-album and a full album, but after starting our promotions it definitely feels different." - (Sojin)

Girl's Day are in their 4th year as artists.

"We feel like we have some leeway now compared to our debut. When we debuted I just had willpower to do my best without any regrets, but now I know what to prioritize showing. Compared to the past I think I found out how to express myself on stage and enjoy it more." - (Minah)

Their title song combines analog and electronic sounds to create a hybrid song in 'Expect Me'. The song portrays the guy as a player and it shows a sensitive girl trying to win over the guy, it is receiving good reactions from female fans.

With their MV release they attracted a lot of attention. With black see through clothing and suspender fashion outfits and taking the performance up a few notches, some reactions mention that it is too sexual.

"I didn't know they would be so interested after the MV release. I believed as well the MV could stir up some arguments. Different from the MV, on the stage we changed a portion of our choreography and our outfits as well. With the song, dance, and expression etc if we show it now I know the arguments will disappear and positive reactions will follow." - (Hyeri)

"While we did cute refreshing concepts, attempting a sexy concept made me worry a bit. I felt pressure we won't be able to break out of our existing image but thinking about it now it was a needless worry. I hoped fans wouldn't feel repulsed suddenly changing from cute into sexy." - (Minah)

(Minah) continues, "My biggest worry was being dismissed by the public, but I think with our diverse approach they will receive us well. I'm thankful to fans that support Girl's Day and not just our cute image."

With their drastic transformation, the reactions from people around them are hot.

"After our comeback stage I got so many messages. I received so many Kakaotalk [Korean Mobile Messenger App] messages from my acquaintances, they were overwhelming. It feels like the reactions were better than other albums. I was surprised at first but then I liked hearing that our song was nice to listen too. *laugh*" - (Hyeri)

"Our seniors and fellow singers with their actions over words, they gave us a thumbs up." - (Minah)

With this full album, they showed their desire to acquire fans of both genders and in different age groups.

"This is the beginning. Attempting a new concept and genre, I am excited to show our diverse charms to the public." - (Sojin)

Minah picked Yeo Jin Goo as her ideal guy.

Minah stated that Girl’s Day would do a free hug event without makeup if they win a 1st place in a music program.

(Minah) - "After our comeback, it's a promise we're mentioning often. If we get 1st place we would do a free hug event on the streets. I'm discussing it with my members if we should take out the 'no makeups' part of that promise.”

Recently on a certain online community forum, there was a post titled 'Girl's Day Minah makeup before and after comparison'. Even without makeup, with clear skin and cute expression she grabbed people's attention.

(Minah) says with gratitude, "I would be lying if I wouldn't be concerned with people being interested in me even without makeup. It's slightly concerning but it is evidence they're interested so I'm thankful for that. I don't mind too much about that kind of attention. I'm always thankful for the interest and love from our fans."

With a cute eye-smile, a baby face, and slim body Minah who receives lots of affection from male fans picked actor Yeo Jin Goo as her ideal guy. She mentions she doesn't like younger guys most of the time, but she mentions that she was charmed by his mature behavior.

"Recently I saw Yeo Jin Goo in an interview, his passion and love for his work was impressive. I know that he is 4 years younger than me. I usually don't prefer younger guys but if he was mature like Yeo Jin Goo then I think it would be okay. His appearance and personality both is close to my ideal person." - (Minah)
