eh, they didn't get popular until Magic which was well into IY anyway. I think it's more the songs than her in a variety show.
Towards the end they had extremely low ratings as well, although that may be because the new cast was terrible. No idea what viewership was like for the first bit, but I never got the sense that the show was extremely popular in Korea.

Well, I guess it was that it made fans into hardcore fans, and garnered more focus on her, which really does help in promotion cycles. (yeah, new cast in IY after sunny, yuri, hyuna leaving makes me QQ)

For some reason I thought the show was really popular in Korea? Or maybe the huge amount of foreign fans made me think that.

I know it has a lot of foreign fans, cause we like kpop and any show with a ton of idols is going to attract viewership, but one of the reasons season 1 was cancelled was low viewership ratings. Like I said, that may have been because of Hyuna/SNSD leaving and the new people being shitty, but I'm not sure about the first 20-30 episodes or so.

Y'all be stupid, Kwanghee is such a boss, those teeth, those necklaces, come on. He oozes style yo. THe couple is just annoying because they play fight like every second of the show. The whole paparazzi thing was pretty funny though. I was going to post something special for the big three hundo, but it's not really much of a milestone and I want to be more prepared or 500. In a few short months it will happen! Edit: Sunhwa is an airhead and she has gums but shes still a cutie and a good girl <3.

The white paper thing was just an act, the show was scripted that way. She did it to boost Secret's popularity since they were just debuting. Why do you think her introduction in the first WGM episode was as an "intellectual" idol that likes to read books and have brunch at book cafés? Their management is trying hard to break free from the white paper image.
First two eps of this wgm seems to suggest otherwise. Seems genuinely air-headed, in a cute way much like on IY.

Idk, they said it wasn't because of that but who knows?
Kim Sang Ho PD revealed to Star News on December 10, “We’re not discontinuing the show because of low viewer ratings. There’s been a lot of conflicting schedules due to girl groups like KARA expanding their activities overseas. It was difficult to take out some of the fixed members, so we decided to end season one for now. There’s a lot of trust being placed on the worth of the ‘Invincible Youth’ brand. After discussions with other producers, everyone agreed to end season one and go ahead with season two next year.”

Well he's not going to say that the show was cancelled cause no one gave a fuck. Either way they had low ratings towards the end so whether that caused the show's termination or not doesn't really matter when you're talking about its popularity.

I think it really is from Magic. She personally got more fans for herself, but Magic promotions gave Secret a huge boost in popularity. Throughout the Magic promotions, Sunhwa transitioned from being called "white paper" to "star of the show" because of how popular the song made Secret. They even commented on how they haven't seen a group's popularity rise so much just from one promotion cycle.
On a side note: Why do Korean's release songs that have lead singers speaking amazing Engrish? Seriously, they could have just recorded someone else singing the "magic" part, but nope... It has to be "mazic mazic mazic..."
What I never understood was the pronunciation of 'mazic' in the first place. There's no Z sound in Korean, but there is the G sound. Why intentionally mispronounce it?!
Much the same reason as western people feel no shame about pronouncing Taekwondo incorrectly. While Korea have their own word for magic, 마법, magic is part of the Konglish vernacular, and along with a huge list of others takes on their own pronunciation. Korean is a lazy spoken language, which I think is a major reason why it sounds so pleasant in song.

If you hear Sunhwa sing it on IY, she says "magic," but the recorded version of the song says "mazic."
Also, PSY was on 102.7 KIIS FM (Los Angeles local here) today at around 7:30 a.m. Talking about Gangnam Style (the meaning) and Ryan Seacrest giving him the option to go to the iheartradio concert in Las Vegas.

But the thing is, they can actually say "magic." In variety shows, the Koreans say "magic." Westerners don't actually know the correct pronunciation of "taekwondo."
Mazic is intended, it was Jieun's idea. Supposedly it's a combination of magic and music, and it's easier for Koreans to pronounce and sing along with. It was originally Magic but was changed after Jieun had the idea.
For most konglish words I just imagine they learned them from American soldiers, judging by the spelling. Instead of Man (만) they spell it Maen (멘). Magic follows along that with that, except it sounds quite odd saying Maejik (american style), as opposed to Majik, so I guess they just bastardised it for the track to be easier to sing and, to their ears, more pleasing.
Ah nice one klogg, that makes sense, in a retarded way.

Sorry, I'm bad at names. Your Tippany gif is good though, it's from the Daum screensaver which I can only recommend putting on your PC if you ever go to a big LAN. You'll never see so much interest in your PC.
