Saw it today with my girlfriend. Visually, easily one of the best films I've seen. As far as the plot goes. It wasn't as good as I was expecting, but it wasn't horrible. I enjoyed the experience and it was great nonetheless.
82% is pretty decent yeah? Look at the negative reviews. Dozens to hundreds of rabid Avatar fanboys flaming every single negative review (and even some positive ones that have some criticism).
And people are depressed about not being able to go to Pandora?
People really need to relax about this movie.
About winning Golden Globe: this wasn't the best year for movies yeah? Up in the Air and Hurt Locker weren't very good I heard. And good blockbusters have won awards before, Titanic and LotR especially.

I agree. Some people need to get a grip when it comes to this film.
Personally, Up in the Air was my favorite movie of 2009. The Hurt Locker was pretty good as well. I don't know how much stock you put into the RT freshness meter, but Up in the Air is at 90% and The Hurt Locker is at 97%. It has a lot of critical acclaim which I tend to agree with; not so much with Avatar.
As for the Avatar fanboys (and haters), this Golden Globe award will make both sides insufferable leading up to the Oscars. I don't have much faith in the Academy to vote Up in the Air, Inglourious Basterds, or The Hurt Locker for Best Picture after that Crash/Brokeback Mountain debacle. I just hope that the Academy doesn't try to make up for The Dark Knight snub with another mainstream fan-favorite in Avatar.

This made me facepalm. Over Up in the Air, The Hurt Locker, and Inglourious Basterds? Ugh!
lol I find these kind of quotes funny. If there is one movie that is the most useful out of these, its Avatar by far.
When people claim global warming is a hoax, when the leaders can't get a deal done at Copenhagen, when sustainability projects are pretty minor, when we're using 130% more resources than Earth can replenish every year, maybe Avatar is going be useful.
Up in the Air, Hurt Locker nor IB will really change the world. And let's be honest, Avatar can. The next generation will be much more conscious about the environment than our parent's and our generations.
In the end, I personally don't care if we solve it or not. But the facts are there and its pretty obvious Avatar is trying to make us more conscious of it.

Are people really bashing the Oscars for not being mainstream-friendly after Titanic, Gladiator, and Return of the King?

Yes there are alternative power sources and i agree we should somewhat conscientious about the environment, but global warming is false.

So you're dismissing the other Best Picture nominees on the basis that they aren't "useful" or "changing the world?"
If any movie is going to bring awareness to global warming, it would be An Inconvenient Truth since that the quintessential movie on global climate change. It attempts to make logical conclusions with observed data of the Earth's climate over many years and what would happen if we don't act now rather than jumping to the conclusion that Earth is already fucked as in Avatar.

That is part of the reason for the jump to ten Oscar nominations for Best Picture this year since there was a clamor over The Dark Knight being snubbed last year for smaller films like Frost/Nixon. Then again, I felt The Wrestler was snubbed, but that's something else entirely.
So you're dismissing the other Best Picture nominees on the basis that they aren't "useful" or "changing the world?"

I'm not dismissing them. Its very rare that a movie helps shape people's perception.
I respect people's opinion so when they say they didn't like the movie/found it too predictable/whatever, I'l respect that.
But as a propaganda (in this context, I'm using it in a positive light), it is and will be the most effective one in our generation. I find to be an undeniable fact because this movie will affect the next generation.
So when people say the message is too in-your-face; it is, but it can't be done in any other way. The message has to be clear cut especially to the next generation because their mind is the most malleable, the most flexible (i.e: subject to be heavily influenced by a movie). Go look at James Cameron's elementary school- it is HEAVILY and I mean HEAVILY green-friendly.
Once you look at that, you realize what his goal was with Avatar.
And as for Inconvenient Truth, it is a good documentary and we need more of those. However, there's not enough people who watched it and it doesn't have any real impact. Its just "another documentary". The other problem is the media. The media (internet, bloggers, cnn, fox) bashed the documentary to a point where the public gets confused. Al Gore is seen as a hypocritical arrogant ass to many (guess why he didn't go for the Democratic nomination in 2008).
So, you can love/hate the movie. I think that's subjective and not worth debating about. But when it comes as a propaganda, it is one of the most (if not the most) effective propaganda of our generation.
