Just saw it, it's pretty good but it's far too long and the story is very cliche.
My favorite part of the movie is actually the first 45-60 minutes, when Jake is getting used to controlling his Avatar and experiencing the world of Pandora in his new body. There's a lot of amazing things to see and discover in the plant and animal life, and it's shown in a way where it feels more like you're discovering it for yourself rather than seeing things from the perspective of Jake. Unfortunately the movie gradually deteriorates into very (and I mean very) predictable cliche in both characterization and narrative. The final epic battle was enjoyable, but to be honest the lead-up was so long and my eyes hurt from watching the big IMAX screen (and maybe from the 3D effects) that I really didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped.
Nevertheless, solid movie. The 3D effects are brilliant, creating a very convincing depth of field and avoiding the gimmicky "in your face" sort of bullets flying in your face effects. Is it the next Star Wars? Sorry, but no. This is not the first 3D movie we've been exposed to, nor the first convincing use of entirely CGI characters, and the narrative is simply far too cliche. Is it a great audio-visual kick to the pants that leaves you with a big smile on your face? Definitely.

I just watched this movie in 3D, holy crap this is easily one of the most impressive movies I've ever seen. The plot itself seems a bit cliche and cheesy (especially towards the end), but my god, the visuals were just jawdropping.

I don't think that's true. Its a historical movie.
Like the rest of James Cameron's movie, its a simple movie with a deeper back-story. Its not your usual movie with twist and everything where the point is just to surprise you, but its a movie with a true conscious. But everybody has their own viewpoint imo. I think he just took a gamble on the story.

The thing about the plot being cliche doesn't really bring any detriment to the movie as a whole imo. Like I said earlier, its a classic story thats been told time and time again, but it's put in such an amazing context and handled so well that it's going to be the defining film of the next generation imo. Something of the next lion king really. This is one of the first movies in a long time that I actually want to see again, it was an amazing visual experience.
+ Show Spoiler +And yea, like some people said the movie is longggg. But I dno, you can easily break the movie up into three clear distinct pieces. - introduction/exploring pandora/meeting the natives/set up of future conflict - his training to become a hunter/change of heart to support the natives/destruction of hometree - the war and conclusion
I think that each section was well paced and breaking the 'cliched' story up like this and giving full exposure to each (rather than skipping a lot of the details like many movies do) really culminated in making the story come alive. Cameron really did a good job in making such a cliche story seem brand new and interesting.

The thing is, I'm surprise that in 14 years, he barely changed the script. Its really surprising.

Amazing movie. See it in 3D!

Just saw it in 3d. The visuals are stunning. I'm certain that's something we'll all at least agree on.

What is the effect of watching it in 3d if one of your eyes suck (a lot)? Does it even 'work' then?

Wow! No one with the slightest interest in science fiction and/or movies should miss this.
I caught the first showing on a nice big screen. I didn't buy a ticket way back when they were released, so I didn't expect to see it this early, but I checked the online booking system just a few hours before the show and there was one free seat (probably a cancellation) right in the middle for me to snatch!
Visually, it was Fucking Awesome. Anybody who claims otherwise is either blind (my sympathies) or lying. I'm one of the rare people who didn't like Gollum in LOTR; this is way better. The characters, creatures, environments, aircraft (living and mechanical), explosions... all gorgeous. The 3D was damn nice too; pretty much as sharp and bright as a regular picture, and I got used to it immediately.
Was the story predictable? Yes, slightly. But there was definitely enough going on to keep it interesting all the way through. Not much to complain about. I wasn't bothered by any supposed excessive sentimentality or green/anti-America propaganda either. One thing I didn't like that much was the music... it definitely did its job, so still not really much to complain about, but I think it could have done a little more still.
I'm hoping for sequels. I want even more flying stuff, even bigger explosions and monsters. MOAR :-(
