lol i have a feeling this movie is gonna lose money.
the budget is 230-300 million (according to wiki)

people are gonna flock to see this new 3D thing and if the word spreads that its bad its so screwd.

Okay kiddies. If you look at dropships in Starcraft and the transport ships in Aliens you'll notice that they are almost exactly the same. Blizzard paid homage to the movie because, well, it's awesome. The Banshee has the same aesthetic as the dropship I would say, since most Terran aircraft share a 'look'. I have a feeling that most of the designs for stuff in the Avatar will have been done by Cameron himself, so it's no wonder that most of the ships, armor, weapons, etc. in all his sci-fi movies look very similar. Hell, even the Pelican in Halo looks like a rip-off of the ship in Aliens, it's just a very well designed cargo ship. Logic people, use it.

As far as hype goes for Avatar... well you have all these quotes from respected directors saying how much the movie rocks. You have critics saying that it blew their minds, and most of them only saw it in 2D. And the finished product isn't even out yet. James Cameron is a visionary. It's not hype, it's praise.

Avatar is one of those movies that will win big or lose big based on word of mouth.

What? I think it makes money no matter what off the hype alone - IMAX has it for THREE months, if the visuals are even 25% as good as some people are saying (people are saying insane stuff like how it transcends the way your brain makes memories) then people are going to see it for that.

I'm guessing it makes half a billion easy.

Its not a "fanboy prediction", but from everything I have heard so far, it is overwhelmingly positive apart from the trailers. There is however one "insider" with some credibility that thought the movie was "just ok". But other than him, it really seems positive.

Everything will play down on word-of-mouth.
But who knows. We'l find out right?

I dunno, but I got a boner from the trailer and regular 2d graphics. Visually, it looks awesome. Now the big thing will be following it up with a good story line. Cameron usually does it well enough, and all the elements seem to be in place.

For example, Starcraft 2 is in 3D. This makes it 50% better than Starcraft which is only 2D.

If your bashing a movie because an aircraft looks like an aircraft from something you saw before then i think you need learn to find what truly defines great cinema instead of hating on everything that isn't original. Because like 99% of movies aren't original.

Also since it seems like 99% of the human population doesn't know this, Hype doesn't change how good a movie is, hype does not change the lighting, acting skills, and camera shots or anything that makes up the actual movie. I facepalmed pretty hard when people i knew starting changing their opinions on how good the dark knight was, and started to say it was bad after all the hype.

This movie will cure aids and 25 sequels will be made. A statue of james cameron will replace the statue of liberty

it's not overhyped, james cameron waited a long time for the technology to finally catch up to his story...

he knows how to make big movies that aren't cheap like 2012 or the day after tomorrow

My cousin directed all the scenes with the flying bird dinosaur things. I think its probably a bit over hyped, but definitely worth a watch.
