If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

It's just not that good of a series, regardless of Shinji. Historically it's a significant piece because of its heavy use of metaphor (relatively unprecedented at the time) and, for otaku, because Asuka would go on to essentially create the tsundere character type as a mainstream phenomenon, but otherwise... feels more to me like a troll recommendation, like y'all do with School Days. You just make them watch it because you love seeing their rage-filled reaction afterwards.

Edit:
Or

Ecael 3:12 pm
you make people watch Eva so they can feel good about taking psychology

That's another way to look at it I guess?

I'm not trolling, I really think eva is a great series, if you want to understand how anime changed in the mid 90's this is the show to watch. But it's also a great mecha show, the first part of EoE is great just for the awesome animation. I don't understand the hate but to each his own.

Add me to the list of people who watched Evangelion and came away with a giant "meh".

It wasn't even that thought provoking for me, there are lots of other shows out there that I find way more interesting in terms of the ideas that they present.

mmhmm. As I said, historically it's significant because it was one of the first and certainly the most major work to have incorporated philo/psycho theory into an anime (not manga), and it also created the tsundere archetype, but... otherwise kinda meh.

yea you're right, there is better stuff out there but for the TIME it was incredible and I was a kid back then so it holds a lot of meaning to me and I still find a lot of meaning in the show today. I can't really think of any anime in 1995 or before that had such depth. I mean, the show is really up to interpretation, everyone is going to have a different view of what happened which is why I like it so much, it's like a piece of art. Art is subjective, but if it allows for a different experience then I think that's something even if the show is subpar to some people.

But I recommend checking out Eva 1.11 and 2.22, they are a completely different take on the TV show and the animation is spectacular. Not so much psychology and shit going on, it's more to the point and more about the mecha portion of the show although there are still those awkward down times in between.

No trust me, I am totally serious. You won't find many (if at all) well-made shows with such depth even today.

Your post makes it sound like anime today is better than anime circa 1996, which is most definitely is not. =/

In 95 (when it aired) we had Macross 7, Ghost in the Shell (which I think trumps NGE significantly in every facet), and A Piece of Phantasmagoria. 94 had this thread's beloved LoGH and Tokyo Babylon. The beloved Jojo, as well as Ninja Scroll were around in 93. If you pick up Miyazaki Hayao stuff (ie. Grave) you'd end up with a long list as well.

Edit:

Numerically it's around the same in terms of quality, although that's obviously always going to be in the eye of the beholder. HE was talking about LoGH though, which has indeed not been matched with regards to its genre. It's the Lord of the Rings of anime science fiction.

Add me to the list of people who don't recommend Eva. Its definitely an influential show, but IMO its one of the most overrated shows of all time. I really disliked the show. When people start talking about how deep the series is, it just reminds me of how people like to talk about how smart and mature Code Geass is. Not to mention Shinji possibly the worst main character ever in a major anime. And I didn't like Asuka or Rei either (which essentially has me hating all 3 main characters). Then the series ending sucked, End of Evangellion had + Show Spoiler +
people turning into orange juice
, and I haven't watched Rebuild. I admit its been an extremely long time since I watched Evangelion, and it probably deserves a rewatch to see if I still hate it (I disliked G Gundam the first time I watched that too), but I'm extremely biased right now.

edit: Plenty of shows had more depth than Evangelion. LoGH is a great example, as someone already mentioned.

Go back to before 1996, and you will find just as much shit as we have today. It's just different kinds of shit. Obviously they didn't have lovelove moemoe back in the 80s.

ninja scroll is great, but did it really have depth? it was about fighting and naked chicks and yea it was great but certainly not on a mental level like Eva. The others you mentioned I'll have to check those out, thanks for the info. This thread is so huge it's really hard to dig through it all and find something worth watching.

Spazer, good lord you flew through Bakuman. I've only been reading 6-7 chapters a day trying to savor it a bit. Your rage for characters has to be anger towards Saiko and Akuzi because their relationship annoys me quite a bit.

Ninja Scroll was a trend-setter, the same way as NGE and its humanoid mecha design (unheard-of prior to NGE because of the strength of Gundam). Many of the character types developed in that novel (and then movie) with their powers would go on to be used again and again.

Hey, hey, guys, let up on the '96 talk. The anime back then was clearly better. I mean nowadays we don't have giant successes like Idol Defense Force and Nurse Angel Ririka SOS and Elven Bride (the synopsis is HILARIOUS) and Magical Princess Minky Momo and Iron Virgin Jun and so forth.
