I really don't think the second half is a good watch, if anything it spoils the first arc a bit. Everything I liked about the first arc was gone in the second one. That being strangely relatable characters on both sides of the conflict, that being Light and L, their conflicted friendship, the love and thrill of the cat and mouse game, the false pretense of justice on both sides, the deep mindgames and plots they ran. The revelation of the memory gambit is one of my favourite moments in all of anime. But I didn't feel like any of these things were present in the second arc. Not only that, it slightly spoiled the first arc for me, because of what they've done with the character of Light after the timeskip. The guy who was only excited about the challenge L posed him after he was outwitted once has now been leading a ragtag team of idiots on a wild goose chase while simultaneously delegating the role of supreme judge of the world to lesser men and women. While he used to have some short psychopathic streaks in the first arc, they were mostly reserved to his inner monologue, which kept them contained and kept him a somewhat likeable character, but it feels like he turned quite a lot more neurotic and unbalanced in the second arc. In isolation, I would have probably considered it an average watch, but since it followed the first arc it tasted too strongly of disappointment and anticlimax. | ||

The primary outside antagonist towards the end of LoGH is a bit iffy but everything else about it is fantastic. So if you can get over the cheesiness of the group it's a magical journey. | ||

some of the character designs still need work imo. Also, is it just me or did Iserlohn capture happen much later in the story in the original anime? I could've swore there was a scene where some alliance members got their asses handed to them by the Red roses or something? oh I see, Toad for ya ~ | ||
