MAL is worth taking into account, it's by far the largest site that tracks this shit and is as such also the most reliable data we have. It's far better than just going off of "oh that's what i see where i go" What you see isn't very representative of overall popularity, MAL while not perfect is far far far more representative than personal experience
And the places i go to talk about anime Franxx is probably by far the most talked about show from winter 2018. It probably represents 30-40% of all threads made on the day it airs.
|
MAL tracks anime data, but the "watching" statistics are compromised from user input, and a lot of people are lazy, and don't put in what show they're watching and even less - what show they dropped.
Where do you see the 25% threads be about franxx?

Where do you see the 25% threads be about franxx? Sure it's based on user input, but that doesn't make the data worthless, it's still far better than "oh that's not what i see" Clearly tens of thousands of people do actually manage their lists, so the data while probably not perfect is probably fairly representative of the trends of the western anime community

tried looking at /a/ , went to page 1, saw nothing about franx, tried page 2 = it loaded page 1 again. Tried page 3 = it loaded page 1 again.
4chan is confusing.

I'd say "I don't see people talking about it" is a much better metric than stats in a website where a very large percentage of people do not fill in data properly.

In what way? Even if a large percentage of people don't accurately update their lists properly(which i don't think is true considering that yuru camp ended 4 days ago and nearly half the people have already changed it from "watching" to "completed") it's still far more accurate than your gut feeling.
Fact is that MAL is the largest site in the west that keeps track of what people are watching and here Franxx has more people watching it than Sora yori and Yuru camp combined.
Also currently around 10 /a/ threads out of 129 are Franxx.

Are you seriously arguing that your anecdotal data is more accurate than what a site with over 5 million registered accounts collect?
|
Also, if the idea if the idea is to know which anime is being most watched, it doesn't matter that some people are filling in stuff wrong on MAL, so long as these mistakes are random, which isn't an unreasonable assumption.
By random I mean if a person is watching Franxx he's as likely to fill in stuff wrong as another person watching something else.

Yea essentially there will be a percentage that doesn't fill in their data but that percentage may not differ much between shows so the relative totals aren't actually changed much by that. People talking about a show is a very subjective metric since there can be a lot of discussion that just isn't shown in your niche websites as they tend to be very insular in what they like.
Any metric is going to have it's flaws. MAL is a decent ballpark you can use to do initial interest levels but is obviously not going to be entirely accurate.
edit: I may dislike ratings on MAL but using it for other things is quite nice and useful. When population sizes get big enough then small things like people not filling in data really won't have much of an effect.

My search for an anime rivaling Hunter x Hunter has been going terribly. Steins gate just kind of sucks. Code Geass seems like it probably sucks too after getting a few episodes in. I'm at episode 20 of One Piece and it just feels so incredibly slow. Full Metal Alchemist may end up good, since I am only a few episodes in, but nothing seems as promising as HxH did when I was like 4 episodes in. I'm beginning to think HxH really is the best anime ever. What's it take for a guy to find a nice "basically just a super long movie" action anime?
I felt like I was just growing distant from anime, but then I found HxH. HxH showed me my taste has gotten more picky, but clearly there are others out there that rival HxH. HxH is funny, yet serious. The pacing was amazing. The continuity and growth was amazing.
I liked Evangelion, SNK, and OPM, but I'd be lying if I said they came anywhere near HxH.
My knight in shining anime armor may lift me from the shadows some day, but not today :'(

It appears to have all the trappings of a bland show, yet turns out to be interesting, well paced and with character development. As for franxxx, I don't see how anybody didn't drop it after the first episode. Violet Evergarden is probably the best non continuing series of the season, Karakai Jozu no Takagi-san is a bit slow, but very sweet and endearing, and the good but unknown would be Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens.
Found Franxxx to be enjoyable and 100% agree with the Violet Evergarden comment. The rollercoaster of emotions and visuals makes it so good especially in ep 10. I've said it in a previous post but I will give it my AotY even though its very early.

Crunchyroll also seems to think that Franxx is up on top, in terms of popularity, according to the number of people streaming it.

Yeah, it doesn't actually need to be action. Evangelion was really good. I just want a really, really well told story that makes me want to keep watching. I'll look into those, thanks!

If you want the order to watch LOGH in it's: My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars -> Overture to a new war -> Episode 3 of the OVA series and then just keep watching the OVA series from there Overture to a new war adapts the first 2 episodes of the OVA series but they are just of higher quality

To me it seems like pretty objective fact that Franxx is very popular

It helps to hear you say that. We are going through similar emotional trauma with the end of DBS. We'll get through this together, friend.

lol noone talking about Darling... I literally open ANN in the meantime and see
![[image loading]](https://i.imgur.com/DeGq6vD.png)
you know... maybe it's just that someone who isn't watching it wouldn't be able to recognize it. Like, if people talk about strawberries this season it's not a bleach-joke but a lame FranXX joke. I wouldn't expect people who haven't watched it to know about that though. I will however say that while 02 is maybe not as hyped as Rem when Re ero happened, she's almost up there. So if nothing else the waifu of the season would probably have to be her and you'd have to see pictures of her everywhere.
Also speaking about your own anecdotal evidence, idk about Violet Evergarden myself. I've dropped that super quickly as that really wasn't anything but a good looking series with nothing behind it. At least for me. And out of all the people I do know that kept watching they all have the same opinion that it's a real disappointment and basicly just watchable because of KyoAni doing KyoAni stuff. And here I'm sitting hearing people talk about it being one of the best, if not the best shows of the season. So that goes to show that that kind of stuff really can screw with how you perceive things. I'm not even sure which of the two idea's is the more common one. That it's one of the bottom-tier shows this season or that it's one of the upper-tier shows this season (on average, for most people). Legit no idea because of that.

I generally like most things I watch but Violet is for sure a disappointment to me. I haven't watched an episode since what, 5? The show imo has pacing issues and it's hard to believe that she came such a long way in such a short period of time.
On the other hand, while I'm less hyped about FranXX, I would still put it above Violet for sure.
Also, MAL is a decent indicator as mentioned above.

Violet and Franxx are def both pretty grreat. Combine Takagi-san and you got my top 3 for the season.
Rest of the season is pretty trash tier tbh. Not even the fate series by Shaft is meh.
