Only redeeming factors of Boruto is Mitsuki and Himawari. They would have made much better main characters than Naruto jr. :-/

I've been hearing that the anime is getting much better than the start. Not sure where they are atm though, guessing they finished all the chunnin exam stuff or something? From the bits of Boruto that I saw, Boruto is downright annoying and not in a good way lol. Having said that, I've always enjoyed the whole eye technique and saw some mini-clips like when + Show Spoiler +
Himawari gets her bakugan for the first time and had a chuckle
so, anyone know if there's more of those kinds of moments in the show?

As for the other discussion, honestly, Naruto's ending was bad and I don't even mean from the whole he's being x who's using y who's actually being used z or some of the other stuff but the idea of having some "eternal" peace. There is no way to have a sequel, aka boruto if the ending was meant to be total peace which also explains why Kishi did say that he had nothing more for Naruto. So yes, Boruto shits on Naruto's ending from that perspective but it's not possible to have the sequel if it didn't lol. As for whether it's a good anime or manga, I have no clue.

Having peace doesn't mean conflicts that would require ninjas don't exist. You could have the boruto series actually focus on ninja stuff like the Zabusa mission from the original naruto. Why the need to escalate things to a world-ending/world war scenario? You can have peace between the major factions and still have conflicts to focus on that requires ninja work.

When the naruto series began ninjas were portrayed as sneaky and stealthy and working in the shadows often and going on a lot of missions protecting people, gathering intel or a multitude of others things. Yet the further into the series naruto went it became more and more ninjas throwing larger and larger energy balls against eachother and any aspect of ninjas being you know ninjas went out the window, and it just became pretty fucking awful because of the need to escalate things constantly. First villages go to open war against eachother, then a terrorist organization is threatening the entire world, then an ancient ninja is revived and wants to control the entire world + plunges the world into a giant war and then an alien arrives randomly and also wants to destroy the world.

There are plenty of series that write great stories that appeal to WSJ's demographic without the need to escalate things with stupid power creep and random asspull powers.
Oh our protagonist died? Some ancient ninja ghost arrives and gives him magical power of someone he's the reincarnation of and now he's alive again and stronger than ever.
It's just fucking terrible.

And boruto fell into this from page fucking one. It didn't even take 100+ chapters, just one page.

Wait you telling me that Boruto had a chance to completely downscale into more intimate storytelling but instead went balls to the wall world ending from the start? That's utterly stupid. Did the author not read Jojo? Perfect example of how downscaling can actually make a story so much better.

I have read a lot of good books, be it LNs, Manga or even your normal kind of literature you read in schools (or at home if you're ZNF). Doesn't mean I know how to write like that myself ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's just mindblowing to me. One of the biggest issues in Naruto was that scale just blew up to the point where nothing seemed to matter and characters stayed stagnant. If you have the chance to reboot it all why the hell do you start at that point!!!

edit: I thought it was going back to it's roots. Was actually keen to check it out one day.

It does to some degree start by going back to its roots(although even that is imo poorly done), but not before starting the series with a flashforward to the fact that it's gonna escalate things in the same dumb way soon enough.

yeah I'm surprised as well. I only heard good things about the series so far from all kinds of youtubers saying that it did go back to it's roots and that it's really entertaining atm. And now people here saying it's the same powercreep (probably already starting way up there) that was the issue for ... everything that wasn't early on in the series.

It's a shame, I feel like an actual ninja show would actually be nice. But instead we're getting another DBZ with people flying around, shooting energy balls and being ninja's in name only ?

If by "the roots" you're talking about a young ninja starting out, taking his chunin exam, and starting on the path to be a great ninja, it definitely starts there. The problem is it just kept the same ridiculously high-powered enemies, because it also keeps the ridiculously high-powered protagonists. I followed the series enough to see where it was (or wasn't) going, and knew I wasn't enjoying it. More than just the power levels, there really wasn't a clean way to continue after the events of Naruto ended. For better or worse, that story was meant to end.

I guess if your dad is still alive and he's literally god who could wipe out the entire planet (?) if only he wished for it, it does become kind of difficult to make little missions for his kiddo who is NOT fighting to literally save the world to keep it from getting wiped out. Or at least to make those kind of stories interesting when the fact that Naruto is still alive keeps popping up in your mind.

Could have just done Jojo. Make the story happen in the future where you don't have massive powercreep protagonists. You can then litter Naruto's legacy all around the world in cool ways. See statures of him or maybe having your knew protag learn about the great Naruto and what he did for the world. All this kind of shit. Scale the world story back to where it's just ninja fighting with a little bit of magic. Overcoming their opponents through clever tactics, strategy and skill instead of magic beams.

That's what I thought Boruto was when I heard about a sequel being made.

That's kind of what I was trying to say though eternal peace may have alluded to otherwise. I enjoyed the Zabusa mission for sure but I doubt I would've enjoyed it if the characters kept going on these mini-missions throughout the whole series. I think Naruto expanding the scope was fine tbh but the execution and the constant x is behind y as well as massively increasing power levels made things that were great before, quite terrible.

Also, I'm not saying I want an all out war but a much bigger conflict is much more enticing to me as a viewer. Problem is that Naruto ended on such a crazy high note with power levels and such that to me, continuing it and focusing on smaller conflicts of "rogue ninjas" is just not that interesting. At the same time, you'll have a hard time reconciling everything which is a major issue in Boruto. I think I watched either the first bit of an episode or the movie and hearing that + Show Spoiler +
Naruto died was really bizzare to me.
Anyways, my advice to anyone is to just read the manga or check the anime out before making a decision on whether you actually want to follow it or not.

Bigger conflicts do not in any way entice me more than smaller conflicts . It all comes down to the writing to me.

Look at a show like Haikyuu, the stakes are literally just a highschool level volleyball tournament, nobody's gonna die and nobody is going to have their lives ruined, the stakes are almost as low as it can get.
And yet it's written in a way that entices you to care, it has character drama and a well written story to make you care.
A story can easily have a smaller and more grounded scope while being incredibly interesting.

Another example would be JoJo as mentioned earlier
+ Show Spoiler [Part 2 and 4] +
In part 2 the stakes are high and Kars threatens the entire world and in part 4 the stakes is a serial killer who kills a few people every now and then that might run loose. It's a monumental difference in what's on the line, and yet i feel that part 4 is so much better and that Kira is an infinitely better antagonist than Kars was

Smaller and self-contained arcs that focus on character drama and development while having an engaging and interesting overarching story are to me generally far more interesting than a series just constantly increasing the stakes and power level because they apparently can't figure out any other way to keep things remotely interesting.

Well I mean, sure, writing is highly important but in Naruto's case, the bigger conflict was necessary for the path to peace imo since I have a hard time believing that the villages would all put their hatred aside if they weren't forced to do so.

My main problem with Haikyuu even though I enjoyed it was that even though you cared about the characters and story, they really really extended each game to fill so many episodes that it's easy to lose track of how things got there in the first place. Given, this is not necessarily only a Haikyuu problem.

Sorry, never watched JoJo so couldn't read the spoiler since I may decide to watch it someday.

War arcs trend to suck in shounen battle manga. It's usually just pointless because everything boils down to a one on one fight anyways. It's a cheap way to raise the stakes in a way that typically has no real effect on the MC.

Yuru Camp reminds me of Yama no Susume. A pleasant surprise.

Mainly lack of real consequences in war arcs. If you had real loss that war entails in shounen battle manga war arcs may not suck as much. The problem with having real tangible consequences is that shounen manga are slaves to their popularity so it's very risky to do such a thing. Which lands up meaning war arcs are just tournament arcs where every now and then they shake up the rules.

@Bigfan: I rewatched all of Haikyuu recently. Only the final season did they really extend the game. Most others were done in 2 episodes. Might be a case of you just remembering the last thing you watched more than previous.

The Jojo thing is simple. Parts 2-3 were basically world ending or global dominance scale. Part 4 was a small town in the middle of nowhere Japan with the scale being not even that towns survival. This allowed Araki to develop one of if not the best villain he's done. People are saturated with world ending stories which are hard to really relate to as they just too vast in scope. Compare that to a neighbor being a baddie in a small town. That's intimate. Something people can really grasp and it allows a lot more expression for the author.

It's also incredibly hard to make people continue to care about a story when you hit the world ending scale. Where do you go from there? You can't really scale back since you already did most hectic thing there is. This leaves you stranded. That's kind of why reboots are popular and go super back in scale. Leave the most room to grow.
