Episode 5 of Madoka and I have to drop it. I can't stand MCs like that these days. Sure, in the past, I've tolerated that helpless/useless MC before, but now, there's no point in wasting time trying.
I'l give that the premise is decent, just the pacing and MC made it unbearable.

all jokes aside, while Madoka is technically a MC of the show I don't think there's a lot of people who actually consider her to be that. Hell, I don't even consider her to be a character of the series, much less a MC.

So they just randomly assigned the show's title to a side character in your book? That's shit way to make a show.
Shadow Skill was one of the early ones that I watched where the 'MC' was not the main character until close to the end. His sister was. And she was fantastic. Then they switched later on and he was fantastic. Check that out if you haven't.

Toad is memeing. Madoka isn't helpless either. She's torn between if she should or shouldn't help and who she should believe.
I'd argue that both Madoka and Homura are good MCs. Sayaka is a bit more silly though, I never quite like teenage angst as a driving motivation but I guess for target audience of anime it's more reasonable.

for her to be a maincharacter in my book the show would have to follow her and let her "do" stuff rather than just be a silent onwatcher. People in the series do stuff because of her but that's about it, she is what the plot is about. In a way how an inanimate object might be the main focus of a story in a lot of other series because that object happens to be important to the story (idk... the holy grail in fate?). All that while it keeps focusing on what Mami, Sayaka, Kyouko and Homura do and go through.
It's a bit different in the episodes that look at the past and I'd certainly call her a character or even main character had the story been that but it's not.

not really no. I really do consider her to be just a plot device that the story turns around and not much more~

Anyone who has sufficient screen time is a main character man, ensemble shows just have shared main characters and supporting ones instead of the usual singular main character. She may not be the impetus of the story but that doesn't mean she's not a main character. Same thing with Homura. None of the girls are truly the impetus of the story. In fact that's one of the central themes of the show.
+ Show Spoiler +Actually Toad she's the only one in the show story that does actually have the ability to change anything.
So saying she's a silent onlooker when in fact Homura and Co are the ones with the inability to have any real effect is just not right. Homura may constantly try to affect change. All that accomplishes is nothing, she is the onlooker at the end of the day. It's just that unlike the others she's aware of her powerlessness. She's given up even trying to change and merely continues to go through the motions just so she can be locked in eternal cycle with Madoka instead of accepting she can't change fate.

well, I'd argue that them trying to change things but failing at it is kind of what the show is about. It's a show that focuses heavily on how tormented they are resulting in the downspiral. Hence why I care about that more than anything Madoka does or doesn't do.
Perhaps not calling her a main is going too far but she's just not in any way or form important to what Madoka (the series) is about for me. As a plot device maybe, as a character certainly not.
To me she's like the random banter at the start of every Monogatari arc that starts the conversation because you need to start somewhere and that evidently turns out to be really important in the end.

Cool to see Saber Marionette in there, one the most underrated 90's anime. Great setting and motifs, fun characters, and the action scenes are kickass. It's also one of the few harem animes in which the MC isn't a complete idiot (when he is, the setting justifies it), and the harem gets resolved brilliantly at the end.
